View Full Version : Halo2/Killzone/MP2 Ad Campaigns as Corporate Statements

I have been taking note of the ad campaigns for the big 3 systems and their big 3 shooters. MS has Halo 2, PS2/Sony has Killzone & Nintendo Gamcube has Metroid Prime 2 Echoes.

In the Halo 2 Television advert we see all the nice shots from the game and master chief, well, being master chief. But, it really struck me with what the narrator says at the end of the commercial "There are those who said this day would never come. What are they to say now?"

I know that this is specific to the Halo 2 story, but it's also a statement for Microsoft as a competitor in the console gaming industry. At first a lot of people didn't think that they could do it, but they have, and in a big way.

This morning I saw a Killzone print advertisement in the Subway on the way to work. It showed the main character standing on the left and then on the right the text said "Our victory is inevitable, Kneel before us." (if I didn't get it word for word, then it was really close to that). This, like the Halo 2 statement above can easily be interpreted as Sony saying that they will not be dethroned.

I have not found an equivalent for Metroid Prime 2, because I have not seen all that much ad buzz about the game at all.

I'm interested in your thoughts...

That in itself says it. Nintendo's 3rd and not trying to do much about it. (to be fair though, I've seen plenty of MP ads)

I think you're just reading too deeply into those ads... :P

And as for Metroid Prime 2, you just aren't looking hard enough. I've seen it's TV commercial more often than I've seen the Halo 2 spot.

Well I didn't look too hard to find some perfectly relevent meaning that's totally in tune with what's going on in the console wars.

I dont watch TV nearly enough to see the MP2 commercials. Too busy trying to beat MP1 before 2 comes out.

If you want to see a horrible picture of Samus like that, check out the new Girls of Gaming magazine. Very horrible drawing, but it's her none the less....i guess.

One of MP2's commercials mentions Shadow and Light... if that means anything.

i think i have seen tv ads for all three just about equally...maybe a few more times for Halo 2 than the other 2 games, but they all have their fair share of advertising

I stay up late regularly, and it seems Nintendo is gearing Metroid at the adult audience more since the commercials play more often late at night.(Almost every commercial break one night)But then again i dont watch TV during the day...no cable/satalite @_@

Depends on who actually wrtes the tag lines for the commercials. If it's Bungie, then it's relating to the game content. If it's Microsoft, then it's a raised finger at the other two companies.

If were looking into this like you are, let me add a little more

This is also in reference to the fact that this game was pushed back for well over a year. That it became a game of sorts that would ever see the light of day, because
A. Bungie has always been a perfectionist company, and doesnt want to release its works until they are completly happy with them.
B. It is living up to its hype, something that isnt easy to do when theres THAT much buzz and anticipation surrounding the game.

This one is actually MUCH more about the game like the Halo 2 one IMHO, but once again can be seen the way you did. The pictured person isnt the main character. Those are who you and your remaining army squard are fighting, as you try to hold out/defeat those who are invading the planet you are on. They in a sense are the mindless shocktroops that show up in countless games, serving their masters will and fighting until they die. Its military propaganda put out by the opposing side to scare the enemy (you) into thinking that your not gonna make it.

I'm still trying to find some deeper meaning within the "The Difference between Life & Death is a few inches of metal" statement from the Prime 2 commercial. Life and death of the company/success of the product relies on... a few inches of metal? Dam I would really have th stretch that one to turn it into any kind of meaning... Dang!
