Yeah, I read this article yesterday. I couldn't believe it either.
One thing that I have always wondered though about preorders. Say there is 2 million preorders (and that doesn't even count the people that will just pick one up when they are in the store) and whatever the game company is, they only are shipping 1 million for the first months.
To make it simplier put why in thel hell wouldn't that game company put everything into making more systems or games to make sure that had enough to ship to whatever store ran out of them??

Because they won't have enough games to cover that many systems either? :)

Good for the DS, but it's important to note that the PSP has not begun official pre-orders in Japan.

This should almost certainly be nothing but good news.

Hopefully the psp will be a success. Mainly so that nintendo will have some competition in the handheld market (competition creates better games imo).

Comparing to SP sales isn't that good IMO because the SP probably had lower sales in the first place given it was just a backlit version of an already existing system.. They should compare it to initial GBA sales.

It will still beat the PSP though! :)

I'm not sure about that.
In Japan pretty much everybody who wanted a cell phone already had one; while some stone age primitives like myself (how do I shot arrow key?!1) don't have their own cell phone or portable game system and think the combination in the DS is a worthy purchase I still don't see it being as big a sell point in Japan as it could be here. A big point, but as the service hasn't been around and people don't really know what it entails, I'm betting that using the DS for communication isn't significant. Now for multiplayer gaming, sure, that's something else...there I do see the wireless changing some minds.
With the PSP, though, hey it's Sony, can they go wrong? I don't think so.

uhm, oh yeah!
uhm, lotsa lotsa lotsa quality games on consoles!!
som much quality games i'm going KWAAAAAAYZEEEEE
sorry, for i am an ass. I've heard a lot of people say this, and until today, it has only turned out to be fanboyishm, thus we will fall on the 'but the ps2 has final fantasy', 'the xbox has halo' and 'nintendo has zelda/metroid/mario'.
really, competition is just another way of making more fanboys and thus, getting more money. Take a look back at when games were made to be fun, and not to have competition.

GG (pronounced gee-gee) 1: Often used on popular multiplayer computer games, meaning 'Good Game'. Generally said at the end of the match by the losing team/player.
2: Sarcastic way of saying 'I agree, good point' on message boards such as ones filled with players of said popular games.

that doesn't make any sense...
go back 20 years and step into an arcade...which game are you putting quarters into? that's pretty intense competition...probably more than we have now.

I respect your views on competition soniko_karuto. I feel that compeitition is needed in the video game industry. For example, look at wrestling. Back when WWF was fighting for ratings from WCW, they were both trying their best to get viewers, but when WWE bought everyone out (ECW and WCW), they had no compeititon (on tv at least), so if you wanted to watch wrestling, WWE was your only choice, so McMahon knew that he could get viewers with less work (quality).
Same goes for two workers working at a store (with an open managers position), they both want that position, so they work twice as hard. Worker A see's Worker B working better than him/her, so Worker A does better than B, and vice versa.
The benefits from the above two situations is that, wrestling fans got to see better wrestling/stories during the WWF/WCW days, while customers get better service from the two workers gunning for the managers position (faster checkout, kinder more sincere attitude from the workers, and shelves being better stocked/cleaned are some examples).
