Ok guys,
I need some bloody help.
I recently got a commodore 64, and a dozen carts. Seperately.
Now, the commodore itself is in pretty nice shape, and the person who sold it makes the usual claim that "it sat for 20 years before i tested it for this auction." x_x blah blah blah.
Anyhoo. Of the carts i have, at least 5 or 6 of which are "Commodore brand"(lazarian, gorf, radar rat race), 3 are HES, and theres 2 atarisoft ones. Also a Super Zaxxon.
Anyhoo, the only carts i can get to work are the HES carts. Now granted, all this stuff was FILTHY. I've cleaned, and cleaned, and cleaned, and no luck. I wasnt sure how to clean a cart port; i used a tip someone gave me for n64 cart ports(rubbed alcohol wipe on a cart, then quickly shoved it in and out of the cart port, then cleaned cart; i did pull a lot of dirt out.)
When i used canned air on the cart port, a VERY nasty smell came out...just an "old dirt" smell.....
Anyone have any ideas? I'm getting kinda discouraged and am not sure if I want to bother picking up a 2nd commodore....
thanks for your help.

If the cart port is really bad, then I would suggest using the ame technique that FABombjoy recommends for refurbishing NES 72-pin connectors, which is ver fine-grained sandpaper wrapped around a piece of cardboard. but first I would try to take the case apart so that I had complete access to the cart port. If it's as dirty as you say, it sounds like the whole thing needs to be cleaned with some alcohol.
