Ok so I want to play some import PS2 games. Now my problem is that I don't have a modded PS2, and I'm not good enough with tech to mess with it. Now, my question is this. Would it be better for me to

A) Buy a pre-modded PS2 (do they sell these anywhere?)

or

B) Import a PS2?

I don't know if PS2 modification has improved, but to the best of my knowledge, it's still extremely poor.

I would absolutely recommend a Japanese PS2. I'm guessing they're a lot cheaper than when I bought one a couple years ago (for $250), so I don't think it's too bad for a reliable, unmodified console that can play all the Japanese PSX and PS2 imports you could want.

I went for the latter approach. I don't approve of modded consoles so I bought a Jap PS2 on Ebay. Mind you, now I want to play US games so I'm gonna need to find somewhere to pick up a cheap US PS2 from - they occasionally appear on Ebay UK but not in the freqency I'd like!

I'd vouch for the modded console. I've had mine for three years working flawlessly, not a single DRE or other problems. It's more convenient, saves space and will play DVDs no matter the region.
I won't hand cash out to Sony (or any other manufacturer) for three consoles just to play games designed for the system.

I also vote for the imported PS2. Seems easier to me...

Import a PS2. More expensive, sure, but it's guaranteed to play every single Japanese Playstation and PS2 game.

IMO modded is the best route....also, depending on your location modders are e-z to find....

Get the Swap Magic boot discs + flip-top lid for your US PS2. It's definitely the easiest and cheapest approach, and there are VERY few games that won't work.

why are there so many in favour of an import unit vs. a modded unit?

:/ because modding isn't always the best idea, period. with a japanese PS2,there's NO swap trick action replay madness to consider at all, no taking the door off your system if you're not good with a screwdriver and blowtorch LOL , and overall, it's a hell of a LOT less of a pain in the ass to get the real thing in the long run, especially as it's foolproof out of the box.

oh, and don't bother with ebay, just try an import retailer if you have the funds.

I bought a Japanese one, it's served me well.

I got the ceramic white one from Play-Asia (link in my sig). I was a little more expensive, but I thought it looked really nice in contrast to my US one.
