i've been collecting games for a better part of a year now, mostly N64. I've read about it and played an MSX emulator, is it worth finding a system or even collecting it? i hear its a Europe and Asian only release. with that said, What am i looking to pay for a MSX and its games? is it a PAL and/or NTSC system also? I mostly enjoyed the Konami ports for it. I've also tried a Sharp X68000. is that also worth collecting? Castlevania X68000 was the best port of the original IMO @_@

I prefer X68000. By the way, how much is one?

There are versions of the MSX that wre released in the U.S. : The Yamaha CX5M and the CX5M II. Games for the MSX, however, were not released in the U.S.. As far as I know, there is no region differences in the games for the MSX, however the systems (I think) do have broadcast regions. If you were going to buy an MSX, you'd be in good shape getting one from the U.S. or Japan.

I've seen Sharp X68000 go for $600...but $2k? wild

Anyways, Sharp X68000 is the mad notes! "Konami <3's X68K " right there!

Don't forget to find Final Fight for Sharp as well...great port :)

I just thought about that price, I never saw one in auction.
Well, maybe it's around US$ 600,00 so.

Yeah, they usually sell for 400-700 dollars, but this usually depends on condition and how much stuff is included. Sweet system, but FAR harder to collect for than the MSX. X68k certainly has better sound an graphics capabilities. Smaller library though. Both have a learning curve, being computers and all.

Now, there was the MSX, MSX2, and the Turbo R, which had a few games that used it exclusively, I believe. I think the real contest before you do X68k vs MSX would be MSX vs. MSX2. If MSX 2 won that (which it would for backwards compatibility and all) then that would be a more even match.

Tough choice...you'd probably have more fun with an MSX due to availablitity an library size, but I voted X68K anyway for a collectibility/$value AND fun.

Well it looks like it is hopeless for me, the prices of just the system is way above my budget :(

But, on the other hand I can still collect games for both :D

I would say neither is worth it. X68000 has some arcade perfect port or very close to perfect ports. MSX has a much bigger library but finding stuff for either system isn't that easy.

MSX has a much bigger library? No...especially if it's PLAYABLE games you're looking for. I don't mean to diss the classics ported to (and developed for) MSX/2, but with the x68K I could name you about fifty arcade game ports and arcade game-alikes. I could name over a dozen exceptional Konami games in a single breath. Not so with the MSX, where I can think of...Maze of Galious, Akumajo Dracula (FDS port), Gradius 2, Antarctic Adventure, the proto-Kojima games, Yie-Ar Kung Fu...well, not so big a list. Some really big titles, and more console-style stuff with the Kojima games...but not as flashy. To some degree it depends on your "focus."

I think playable might be tossed around rather lightly. The MSX has a massive library. I'd be shocked and apalled if the X68000 even came close.

As for what they cost -- a lot to ship from Japan, so get ready.

Well, I could be far wrong, but I tend to see the same stuff on eBay for MSX and MSX2 whenever I'm looking. Sure, I haven't exactly gone looking in Japan for MSX stuff, so that probably skews things (as there's never much x68K stuff on eBay, almost less than FM Towns even).

Quantity wise the MSX destroys the X68000 by a long margin. As for playable games it depends on your tastes. If you only or mostly only care about arcade posts the X68000 wins hands down. The X68000 is much weaker in all other areas for the most part. A lot of companeis got there start on the MSX like Microcabin, Glodia, Falcom etc. I'm sure the first 2 most people aren't going to be famliar with. Personally my tastes are much different than most of the people on this forum. I could name about 50 good X68000 games versus about 200 for the MSX. And I've only barely scratched the surface with MSX stuff.
