In the Retrogaming Roundtable continuing series of classic system homage... let us discuss the system that brought video gaming back from the grave.

I'd like EVERYONE who has ever played this system to give some input here, please.

When the crash of '83 clobbered the momentum of video gaming, there were many skeptics who felt the whole thing was a "craze"... a "fad", if you will. Meanwhile in Japan, the Nintendo Famicom had already begun its juggernaut journey and was on its way to the US as the "Nintendo Entertainment System". Many of us who were part of the Atari generation didn't know WHAT to make of it. Many others grew up with their NES, one of the most endearing - and enduring - systems... ever. So tell me:

- What is your favorite game on this system?
- What are some of your other favorites?
- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
- How many games do you have for it?
- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

Go time! Have fun with this, but by all means, share your thoughts!

NOTE: to jog your memory, here's our complete list of US games:

- What is your favorite game on this system?
Ahh Metroid, Dragon Warrior Series! and of course the Super Mario Brothers series!

- What are some of your other favorites?
Who can forget the Legend of Zelda?

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
I once threw a nes controller at my wall makeing a dent in it when I kept dying in Kirby.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
Ahh, I was six years old... I idolized my older brother and I saw him playing the nes my mom had bought us and I thought to myself if he likes it, it MUST be cool and I've been an avid gamer ever since.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yeah I owned it untill I was like 9 and my brother sold it at a yard sale....stupid bastard. I re bought it in early 2000.

- How many games do you have for it?
130

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
LOL One time me and my brother stuck out NES in the freezer because we thought it kept over-heating.

What is your favorite game(s) on this system?

Super Mario Bros 1, 3 (I played 2 first time on my GBA!), Operation Wolf, Bionic Comando, Jackal, Mega man 2, Othello, and of course Double Dragon!

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

At that time, I switched from the Inteli straight to the NES. It was very difficult to find a game that infuriated me. Heck, I loved them all! I loved going to the local video game store, and renting games with my brother and cousin. Best of all, was those birthdays where my parents took me and my brother to Toys R us and let us choose 2 games to call our own!

The pinacle of it was when I got a 13" TV in my room for my 14th birthday.. OH MY GOD! NES in my room! Imagine that..

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action?

My cousin got it back in 1988 and I really wanted one badly. In fact, I remember going to sleep one night crying because I found out my mom went out and purchased 5 games for my cousin, while we didn't even have an NES.

Later on, I found out my mom owed he sister some money and so she paid her back through buying my cousin some NES games. When my parents found out how hurt my brother and I were over the incident, 2 weeks later we had an NES system with 7 new games!!! (which was quite expensive back in 1989).

What game was it? What was your reaction?

Like any 12 year old kid, ripping into a game just to get it out, and never bothered reading the manual, it was difficult to get some games to play, while others were great off the start.

The easy ones were: Mega Man 2, Othello, Jackal, Mario Bros + Duck hunt.
The hard ones that we only tried playing after a while were: Airwolf & Bionic Commando. Bionic Commando ended being my favorite for quite a while after we finished it!

How many games do you have for it?

My original system + games were sold off in the mid-90's in a garage sale. About 2 years ago, my brother purchased an NES system + 10 games for dirt cheap at a flea market. I was hooked!

I now own over 500 games, dozens of accessories, about 5 systems (of which one is the top loader!)

I have an NES now, but that is a very recent change. THEN I had a SEGA Master System. I will likely never shake the feelings I have about the NES that I felt then:

"Why can't I rent games for my system?"
"Why am I having such a hard time finding a place that sells games for my system?"
*sigh*

I realized, when a friend showed me SMB3 on his NES, that the NES was the shiznit.

I like my NES now, and I historically appreciate it's significance. Nevertheless, to me, it's that "other" system. I'm late to the party, but hey, there's room for both on my huge gaming shelving. :-D

What is your favorite game on this system?

It is, was, and always has been River City Ransom. It was the first NES game where I saw the personality of the system, wanted to finish the game, and continually go back to it, even with friends.

What are some of your other favorites?

I loved the Mike Tyson version of Punch-Out!! The coin-op was always a favorite of mine in the arcade (I own a Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!! arcade cabinet). The first Zelda game is still fun to play, and there are a few dozen others that I'm always happy to play, including the revisited "classics" like Millipede, Joust, Gyruss, Galaga, Popeye, Xevious and Q*Bert. It's still kinda funny to see these games on THAT system, but what the hell. They're the goods!

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

I remember being quite surprised by the quality of some of the Commodore 64 games that appeared on the NES. "How did they do that on a cartridge"... games like Caveman Ugh-lympics, Three Stooges, Pirates! and Defender of the Crown leap to mind. Mind you, the system I was playing the most immediately before getting into NES was the C64.

Infuriated? Yeah. Anything with the word "Mario" in it. FUCK! I suck at platform games!

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I was in K-mart about a week after the system launched. The die-hard Atarian in me didn't really want to accept that a Japanese company had created a CONSOLE here in the USA, but a few weeks later I was back to buy the thing. Excitebike was my first NES purchase.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Yes indeed... and yes most certainly :)

How many games do you have for it?

About 600, but believe it or not, I'm not a "serious" collector. I pick up the boxed ones when I run across them, and just slowly work my way up over the years. It's been almost 20 years, folks.

Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

I've owned all three Panesian games and have traded each of them away over the years. I'm not sorry. Like I said, I'm not a "serious" NES collector. They're better off in a completist's hands!

What is your favorite game on this system?

I would have to say Kid Icarus. While I'm a big fan of Mario, nothing got me cursing, cheering, and going back for more punishment than the excursions of the little wing-ed Pit.

What are some of your other favorites?

The SMB series and both Zeldas are at the top of the list. Goonies II, Contra, Bionic Commando, Wizards and Warriors and Donkey Kong 3 float up to the top as well.

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

I would have to say Super Mario 2. Compared to some of the other titles at the time, it looked like I was playing a damned cartoon.

Infuriated: Toss up between Ninja Gaiden and Battletoads. I wish Ryu could just f%#$&@ climb rather than wall jump to get up those pillars! And Battletoads-well, Rare games are sometimes like a journey into S&M. Painful to play, but still makes you go back for more.

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Memory is a little foggy there. I know I saw commercials for it. The one that pops into my head is the Zelda commercial with the dude going around hollering "Zelda! Zeelllldaaaa!" while showing in game footage. I first saw a deck in action at a schoolmate's house. I just met him and invited me over to play Nintendo. He turned on the deck and inside was Mike Tyson's Punch Out. I was mesmerized. Never had I seen graphics like this on a home system. Then he let me at The Legend of Zelda. I remember the experience: it was like a fish being out of water. I fumbled with the control pad (was still an Atari player), trying to get used to using more than one button. Of course I died...a lot. But it was a taste and my life and outlook at video games changed that day.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Oh yeah. I still own my original deck. Had the pins replaced and it keeps on playin'.

How many games do you have for it?

While I love the system and its near and dear to my heart, I only have about 60 or so carts. I'm not a completest by any stretch of the imagination-I only collect games that meant something to me at the time I originally played them or that are the most fun. I too had the Panesian games, Action 52, Myriad multi cart but sold them/traded them for other stuff.

Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

The only story I haven't shared (my devotion to Mario being one and the fact I bought the rare games mentioned above for only $6 a piece) was getting my Mom to agree with my purchases. She'd be mad that I would spend my money on a game, but then I'd let her play it, get hooked on it, and then all would be well. She'd also poke fun at me or act concerned when I talked games since "that's all I'd talk about" (though my half brother talked about fishing or sports, my Dad about computers, so in hindsight I had no idea what the deal was). The the twist: she never really played many games over the years-no time, no interest, what have you. Not too long ago I get a call at 9 PM saying that she got a Nintendo at a garage sale and she needed games (with urgency in her voice). I was there at 9:15 cleaning the deck. She now plays Kid Icarus on a regular basis and has me looking out for carts for HER. Gotta love it.

Favorite game on the system

I'll stick it out through thick and thin for Zelda 2.

Other favorites are, Battletoads, which I can now say is easy, Mega Man 3, Tetris Nintendo, SMB 1 and 3, Galaga, Guardian legend.

Games that wowed me, is SMB, playing that game was like being in heaven.

Game that made me mad was, Mega man 6 dang that game suck, and Cobra Triangle, Addicting as heck but impossible, to this day I know no one who has beaten this game.

I cant remember the first time or game I played for it, I got it for christmas of 92.

A story dear to my heart.
I was trying to buy Super off road, from someone in the neighborhood, but he couldn't find it when I paid him, so he gave me Zelda 2 instead, which at the time was very expensive. It seemed interesting but I didn't know what to think of it. At the time my dad was a big Nes player, and the game drew both of us towards it, even though we had no idea how to play it, because I had a loose cart, we didn't even know how to save the game, little by little we figured it out, the Shadow at the end was relentless, in the end my dad finished the game before me. That was both of our favorites, and to this day it is still mine forever to come.

:starts to miss game again, frantically runs to closet, digs out NES and Zelda 2 hooks it up and plays for hours: LOL LOL

Fav games: Super Mario Bros. 3, Battletoads & Double Dragon, Sky Kid, and Mega Man 3. I played those to death as a kid, I swear. But mario 3 was tops, and still is.

I was surprised quite pleasantly by Sky Kid. It didn't seem like much at first, but then i played it and realized how sweet this game was.

Now Circus Caper, there was a POS. And Amagon, though super sweet, drove me insane!

The first time was at my aunts, they were playing Super Mario Bros. I was blown away by the graphics, and the game itself rocked. I'll admit, though, it took me a bit to get past that first goomba LOL

Oh I had it back in the day...I still have the same console sitting in the basement, need a new connector. In the meantime, I use this top loader I also got back in the day. Same games as back then too. have about...110 games. I haven't been as active collecting for that as other consoles.

There was that time my sister and I saved up for weeks to get mario 3 the day it came out, and ended up getting the second shipment the 2nd day it was out at toys r us...there's also some more stories in the video game story thread ;p

- What is your favorite game on this system?

Ninja Gaiden 2

- What are some of your other favorites?

All the Dragon Warriors, the Mario Games, the Zelda Games, and many, many more.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Surprised - Vice Project Doom, Kickmaster
Infuriated - Total Recall and Ninja Gaiden 3

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

We rented it for the very first time back in 1986, It came with Mario and Duck Hunt. I had played Duck Hunt before at the arcades, so we played that first. Then we switched to SMB, and it became one of the greatest games i had ever played...

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Yes, got it for X-Mas back in 1987 with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Excitebike, Hogan's Alley, and something else I can't quite remember.
Yes, I own one today.

- How many games do you have for it?

Today, around 200 games. I did have 436 at one time, but sold them over the years.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

1. I remember finding and buying an Action 52 at a rental store for $7, back in 1995. (We soon got rid of it, I always remembered my dad saying he wanted $2 per game, but the place gave him $9. ;)
2. Our family had a chance to buy a multicart back in 1990 or 91, but we decided against it (Plus they wanted $200!)
3. Buying a brand new Dragon Warrior 3 at Wal-Mart for $25, then trading my old one in for about the same price.
4. We sold our first NES back in 1991 along with the 16 games we had for $200, so I could get an SNES the first day it came out. Soon, we traded that in and got an NES back.
5. Getting a Top Loading NES back in 1993, and the TV made those stupid lines, so we took it back...

What is your favorite game on this system?
Elevator action

What are some of your other favorites?
I'll have to agree with most that the SMB games were all good.
I also liked Contra and Rush 'n Attack.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
I never had the NES back then. I had the SMS so I never played any of the games until the early 90's when I picked one up.
I own one working toaster model today and will occasionally hook it up for Elevator Action.

How many games do you have for it?
Even though I don't play the NES much I am a game collector so I have about 50 US releases and maybe 15 or so Famicom carts.
In my humble opinion the SMS was a better system than the NES.

- What is your favorite game on this system?

Can't pick just one.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Bionic Commando, Super Mario 2, Zelda 2, Destiny of an Emperor, Tetris, Tetris 2, and Blaster Master.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Guardian Legend surprised me... I had thought it was a simple shooter. Same with Blaster Master. Infuriating? Easy: Little Ninja Brothers. It's a unique mix of action and RPG, but some of the fight scenes seem horribly unfair... like standing next to an opponent with him pummeling you, but your punches don't register on him. Baseball is also bad because of the lousy (and slow) fielding.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

The first time "in action" was after I had bought it. The game was Super Mario Brothers, and I was blown away by the size of the game and the hidden goodies.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Bought it in 1989 when others talked about how great it was. Until then, I thought Nintendo was crazy. After all, video games were dead!
I eventually sold that unit in '92 when it started gathering dust. On a whim, I bought a used NES with 13 games for $50 in 1997. Haven't looked back.

- How many games do you have for it?

Too many. Over 800 including US, PAL, and Famicom releases.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
Nothing special. But I'm looking for ideas on "hidden gems" that I can play next.

FINALLY a thread for the God of gaming!!! THE NES!

What is your favorite game on this system?
Tecmo Super Bowl- holy shit I can play this games everyday of the year and not get bored with it. Everytime I come home from college my friends and I still play tournaments

What are some of your other favorites?
Wow I like so many games, ummmmmm... Dusty Diamond Softball, RC Pro Am II, Little Samson, Baseball Stars 2, Micro Machines, Gotcha, Uncharted Waters, Alfred Chicken, Blue Marlin, Bonk's Adventure, Crash and the Boys, Karnov, Shatterhand, MC Kids, Home Alone, Maniac Mansion, MC Kids, Monster Truck Rally, NES Open, Tengen Tetris, North and South, Pro Sport Hockey, Rally Bike, Soccer, MLB, Super Dodge Ball, Wacky Races, Flintstones 2, Super Mario Bros(the first one), and Mission Cobra.... these are just some :D

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
I was surprised at Tecmo Super Bowl, Micromachines, Home Alone, and MC Kids. Tecmo Super Bowl speaks for itself!! When I first had the chance to play Home Alone I told my cousin this game is queer, but then played it and was addicted. MC Kids was a little kid game and I was amazed at how fun it was. Micromachines was such a fun game and I did not think a game that was not licensed by NES could be so fucking good.
I was infuriated with Wayne's World and Cyberball. Wayne's World sucked so much dick for a late release. Cyberball was just a shit game that I did not think was worth a fuck.

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
I went to my grandma's and went into the living room because I heard some music I never heard before and it was SUPER MARIO BROS. I was amazed because it looked so much better than my old Atari. My cousin got the NES for Christmas and I stayed there for like 2 days just playing Super Mario Bros. God it was a great moment.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yeah I owned this system back in the day, but then Genesis was released and I am sure you all, just like my dumbass, sold my NES to get Genesis. I went to a mom/pop game store and traded my NES and like 70 games for Genesis. Fuck what a rip off. To this day I am still pissed at myself!!!
A few years back I got a NES at a rummage sale and thought "cool now I can get some of my favs and relive the memories." HAHA that was an understatement, now I collect NES and love all the memories of the past. Nothing is better than old NES memories, going to the gamestore every weekend to rent a game and saying fuck homework, going to buy a game for your birthday.... AHHHH NES is the best!!!

How many games do you have for it?
Well in about a year of collecting I have 729 of 772 of the US Released games(I do not consider Sachen a US release and do not collect variations). I think that is outstanding considering I am a poor college boy. I have most of the REAL RARE games but still need Myriad, Cheetahmen 2, and Peek a Boo Poker but they will come in due time!!!

Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us
Shit there are so many stories, but I will share a few.

I remember one time my friend and I were playing River City Ransom and then went to another friends for the weekend. We rented Monster Truck Rally and took turns building tracks for the other 2. One of us would build a track and have the other 2 hide their eyes so they would not see how we were building the track. I do not think any of us got any sleep that weekend. Well my friend and I go back to his house and discover that WE NEVER TURNED OFF RIVER CITY RANSOM, so we sat down and played that!!!

Another time my friend spend the night at my house and I was sick. We were playing MC Kids and were stuck on a board so I told my buddy I was going to sleep. I wake up a couple hours later and find out my friend found tons of secrets and was kicking the games ass!! Wow that woke me up!!

When I was about 8 I first stayed the night at a friend's house. I was scared at first but then saw he has NES. We stayed up all night playing TMNT II and Simpsons vs the Space Mutants. We got to Shredder and got our asses kicked!!!

The memories go on, and on..................

What is your favorite game on this system?

My favorate game of all time would be Zelda. It killed the most time.

What are some of your other favorites?

SMB3, Kirby, Lolo, Rescue Rangers, Dragon Warrior 4, Metroid

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Oh man, Wizzards and Warriors, it drove me to throwing the controller for the first time in my history of gaming. Also the Ninja Gaiden series.

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

The first time was at Target with SMB. I wasn't that impressed with the NES at first because I had seen a demo of the Amiga beforehand.
About a week after it was released a friend named Boe Martin got one with R.O.B. and Gyromite. I thought it was gimicky and was unimpressed. I started to be impressed with the NES because of the gun and Duck Hunt.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

I had an Amiga first having sold my C64 for the cash. I didn't get a NES until the first price drop. Mostly because my friends all had NES's and I wanted to trade games and Zelda was out and I wanted my own cart for saves. I still have that original NES.

How many games do you have for it?

Lord, probably close to 700 with the dupes. My collection is at the point where finding games I don't have is becoming difficult (or expensive)

Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us

To this day it amazes me what an impact this system had on so many people in the 80's. You could play the first half second of the opening to Zelda and most people 25-35 could tell you what it was without you telling them the sound was a game at all. I've run across people playing a NES at parties to this day. The system was the first that i saw that appealed to moms because of Dr. Mario and Tetris.

What is your favorite game on this system?

Tecmo Super Bowl-for reasons I've stated over and over again.

What are some of your other favorites?

Kickle Cubicle, Super Dodge Ball, Little League Baseball, Bad News Baseball, & the Mega Man series.

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

I was surprised by how much fun some truly horrible games are. At face value, Double Dribble sucked beyond the strength of a Hoover, yet I play it all of the time. I was also surprised that I can play a game based on the Bible for more than 30 seconds (I like Sunday Funday a lot!). Mega man and Mario still have the ability to get me throwing the controller once in a while.

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I played Skate or Die at a friends house, and LOVED it! We used to stay up until all hours of the night playing it, along with SMB & DH on weekends.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Actually, no, I didn't own one "back in the day." My parents didn't let me have one. My mom thought it was better for me to do things outside like play with fake guns and set the back yard on fire. But we DID have a Commodore, and my Dad had tons of games for it (including some weird German SMB clone), so I didn't miss out on games entirely. Plus, practically every kid in the neighborhood had one, so I'd just go over to their house if I wanted to play.

I DO have one now, thanks to my wife. When we were dating in high-school/college, she gave me HER old NES, along with some games. I proudly plugged it in next to my SNES & N64, and now I own more NES games than anything else!!

How many games do you have for it?

I'm quickly approaching 300. I plan on getting CLOSE to all of them eventually, but I'm in no hurry. I don't have room for what I have right now![/b]

HAHA oh man Raedon just made me remember an awesome NES memory which just happened recently. I went to my best friend's house with the top loader and some games. I just got Bubble Bath Babes and took that with me. Well I get to my buddy's and hook up the NES and play some Tecmo Super Bowl... after a few games we go out to the kitchen to make some grilled ham and cheese sandwiches and go back to the NES and find my buddy's mom playing Bubble Bath Babes! She was addicted to the game because it was just like Tetris!! Holy shit we busted her because we kept telling her she was playing it to check out the 8 bit porn!! LOL

- What is your favorite game on this system?

I still love Super Mario 3. I can go back to that game, sit down and play through it anytime.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Tetris, Dr. Mario, Super Mario 1.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

The first time I seen Super Mario 2 it was not what I expected whatsoever. I find it's an ok game, but I just can't get into it.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

The first game I ever saw on it was Super Mario 1, and I was amazed. It seemed so lifelike at the time. The only game I head ever really played up until that time was Donald Ducks Playground in the Schools C64 lab.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

My parents never bought me video games. Ever. Not even handheld video games. They were aftraid they would corrupt me or something. They always told me they were too expensive, yet went out and bought other equally expensive gifts, such as my first guitar, my keyboard, and my stereo. I finally bought my very first NES in 1996 when I first moved in with my (now) wife. Sold it, then bought another in 98. Now it's one of my favorite older systems.

- How many games do you have for it?

A quick look into Cart Commander tells me I have at least 115.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

My 'friend' who introduced me to nintendo was a horrible spoiled brat, not to mention a thief and generally a bad apple. Anyhow, I accidentally unlocked the white coin ship in SMB3, and he raided all the coins. A couple of days later, he unlocked the white coin ship, and started screaming at me not to get it, which of course I did. As soon as I got to it though, he pushed reset on the nintendo. He never did explain to me how to get it either. It really sucked.

Kid Icarus

- What are some of your other favorites?

Metroid on both counts, first game I played for 24 hours.

What game was it? What was your reaction?

Childrens Palace I think, it was in 87-88 maybe. I had played the play choice 10 system at Pizza Hut ever friday night when we went to pick up our pizza's.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Got it for my 14th birthday with Rob and the Blaster

- How many games do you have for it?

Currently, zero. :(

- What games surprised you?

RC Pro-Am: slow at star, getting really hard on the higher level (over 32).
Gun-Nac: a surprizing good little shooter.
Balloon Fight: great two players game.
Space Shuttle Project: when you know how to control the shuttle
it's a good game.
Lone Ranger: good adventure game
Rescue Embassy Mission: everybody know about CounterStrike these day but how about this little gem ?

Infuriated you?

Damn you Battletoads, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future !!!

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in

action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

In a Canadian Tire, it was show with SMB, i was
looking the first level demo i was like "wow, the
graphic are unbeliveable, this will beat Atari"

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about

now?

Yes i own the system "back in the day" in 1987 and still today.

My parent buy the "Control Deck" set at the Canadian Tire for 157,77 CA$ (the tag price still on the box today). The first game i bought
with my own money was Zelda 2 and RBI Baseball. After 1990, i
rarely play with my NES, the SNES was taking all the place.
Around 1999 i started collecting games and NES goodies, so
my videogames collection is 95% NES and 5% everything else.

- How many games do you have for it?

Near 200, but i'm a completist so i always look for complete
or at least games with there box. So i'm slow to get the
"high" number (like 500-600 games) but i like to have the
game with there box, it's make a good display in a bookshelf.

I have the Control Deck Set (SMB1), Action Set (Grey, Orange Zapper), Action Set (SMB3) and Deluxe Set (ROB), all boxed and complete.

Dozen of joysticks, 2 ROB, Power Glove etc...

Right now, the rarest game i have is Menace Beach, on the
accessories side, the Hot Seat Game Chair and the Nintendo Service
Center Joystick Test Box.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share

with us?

Beating SMB1 for the first time on a 13 inches B&W Curtis TV,
i was playing that game for months and i always died
in the world 7-1. When i finally pass under Bowser in the last castle,
it was a big accomplisment for me.

Start a game the morning, pause the game for the entire day, going to school and continue at night. I think everybody here did that.

Beat Zelda 2 with every level at there maximum.

At Phillyclassics 2, seen Joe with 1 of the 3 Panesian game
in his hand i was like "good lord..." it was the first i saw a Panesian game !

- What is your favorite game on this system?
Zelda, Bionic Commando, Baseball Stars

- What are some of your other favorites?
SMB 3, Techmo Bowl (the first one), Darkwing Duck

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
Surprised me? Baseball Stars, as it revolutionized baseball games by having a league play setup and the possibility to create your own team (and fire your players), all features that are common in today's baseball games.
Infuriated me? I had a hard time playing SMB 2 and still does to this day. I'm rather skilled at the other Mario games, but when it comes to Super Mario Doki Doki Panic, forget it. I suck at it.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

It probably was in spring/summer 1987, when my best friend and I went to Toys 'R Us (it wasn't close enough to go there by ourselves, so his dad drove us there). All I remember is that the console (and games) were in a display in the middle of an aisle. I suppose that the displayed game was probably SMB.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
I did not own it back then, but my best friend and neighbour Seb did, so I spent countless hours in 1988 and 1989 playing the console in his living room. After a decade and a half, I finally own not one but two NESs (thanks to SlyDC). One works so-and-so, the other is great even though I tightened the tray too much when I cleaned the console.

- How many games do you have for it?
I currently have about 10 games, but I haven't gotten all my must-haves yet (Baseball Stars still eludes me).

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
Seb got the free subscription to Nintendo Power (I don't know whether he still has his issues). I remember watching Seb demonstrating minus world 1 in SMB (when he was telling me about it, I didn't believe him). And when playing Baseball Stars, Seb would get his fun from firing his pitcher, doing his best Fred Flinstone imitation ("Out, out, ouuuuuuut!!!!!").

- What is your favorite game on this system?
Much like many others, I've probably logged more hours in on Tecmo Super Bowl (hands down my favorite sports game of all time). However, my favorite game for the system is T&C Surf Designs.

- What are some of your other favorites?
Final Fantasy (my first non-text-only RPG), Castelvania 2, Little League Baseball, NES Play Action Football (though I don't know why after trying to play it the other day), M.U.L.E.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
SMB looked so much cooler than anything I had on my Atari 1200XL. Peter Pan and the Pirates really made me mad, my mom used to pick up NES games for me when rental places would sell them (bless her heart) and I remember thinking it might actually be cool.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
Probably K Mart in 86 or 87, they had it set up by the checkout. SMB was in there, I just couldnt get over the scrolling screen. I wish I could go back to those days...those days...of wonder...(cue Wonder Years theme song)

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yep for both, but this year I opted to get a Super 8 instead of a new pin connector, with mixed results (see my "My Super 8 Ate My NES Game thread.)

- How many games do you have for it?
'bout 70.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
Nintendo was the biggest part of my life from the age of 6-12 or so. I didn't get one until I was 9 or 10, so I was always going over to my friend Amber's house to play. She was always playing RPGs and she'd never let me play, but I'd pour over the FF strategy guide and look up hit points for monsters and stuff. It was good enough for me just to watch. I actually started subscribing to Nintendo Power *before* I got an NES.
I didn't get an NES till the summer of 89 or 90, pretty near the introduction of the SNES, and I continued to be behind the curve until I got a N64 the year it came out. For some reason though, even though I had it, I still felt behind the edge of technology after I saw the PS. Now, though, I wish I'd gotten a GC instead of a PS2, especially shopping the day after Thanksgiving and seeing all those $49 DVD players, but I digress...

- What is your favorite game on this system?

Baseball Stars, hands down

- What are some of your other favorites?

Mario 1 & 3, Super Dodge Ball, Mega Man 3, Dusty Diamond Softball, Operation Wolf, Rush 'N Attack, Batman

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Mario 3 really surprised me, didn't think a game could be that big, and that beautiful on the NES. Baseball Stars amazed me, it is still my favorite baseball game, ever.

Mario 2 infuriated me since day 1, it wasn't a real Mario game in my eyes (still hate that game), also the Zelda games were tough for me to get into back then, they started seeding my deep rooted hatred of all things RPG to this day.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Yeah, Christmas of 1984 or 85, the day we got ours!! First game was Super Mario Bros. I was impressed how advanced the graphics looked (we had graduated from the 2600 to the NES, when growing up, we were a 1 console at a time family).

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Well, my last answer answered that one, the problem was back then, that I couldn't afford to buy games, so I only owned 13 games in the entire time I had a NES from that Christmas until getting rid of it in 1991...now I have 3 NES systems, 1 top loader!

- How many games do you have for it?

270+ different titles right now...

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

I have played 5 full 162 game seasons on Baseball Stars...before the battery died on me :( you should have seen my team, my Cubs were unstoppable!!! Thank goodness for emulators though, I'm working on a 6th season, albeit, with new players...

My sister has never beaten SMB1...I can beat it in one life without using Warp Zones :D She's played it even more than I have!!!

Yay!

- What is your favorite game on this system?

Well. I'll officially say Legend of Zelda. But my REAL favorite? Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout. I love it. I just fucking, love it. I can play through it in one sitting and it's still fun the same. Eat me if you don't like it :D

- What are some of your other favorites?

Zelda 1, Kickmaster, Power Blade 1&2 (Fucking amazing games), Bionic Commando, Little Ninja Bros, Desert Commander, Dr Mario, jesus. The list goes on.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Surprised: Hard to say. Any AVE or Color Dreams game I enjoyed. Krazy Kreatures was one.

Infuriated: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I remember renting it back in the day... and promptly returning it, something I *never* did. That game is just evil.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I don't remember the first time I saw it in action. I would say not in a store, because, if I remember correctly, my parents got me the NES based on how much I played the Atari 5200. I could be wrong.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Yes, and yes. :) I got it in like, 1986/1987. A blur. It's really hard for me to do the math since my memory is so shitty. YES I HAVE IT NOW :D

- How many games do you have for it?

All but 2 for NTSC. Stadium Events and Dragon Warrior 3. Missing a good 30 variants, over Color Dreams and licensed variants. (Most nitpicky, like Tennis's top label color). Need 6 Euro only PAL games, and ~15 name changes. Got all Sachen releases. And a NTF2. I'd say 850 in total.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

Where to begin?

TMNT: I remember waiting patiently each day for my dad to come home with this game, and how I excited I was when it finally got here.

Monster Party: I remember how I was struggling to beat this game, and I went over my friend's house to play it, and taking turns, we finally made it to the end with the TWIST ending. We freaked, but it was all good.

There's more, but my mind is fried from today :)

- What is your favorite game on this system?
River City Ransom, hands down. The funnest game I ever played.

- What are some of your other favorites?
Zeldas, Contra, Mega Mans, Ninja Gaiden 1, 2, the Maniac Mansion port, Gradius, Dragon Warriors... too many to list!

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
Suprising? Dragon Warrior 1. I never knew what RPG's were becuase I never played one before... until I rented Dragon Warrior. I dind't even get it returnd before I went out and bought my own copy.

Infuriated? Ninja Gaidens! Mega Man's...

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action?
My cousins house on Christmas... 86 I believe. They were playing super Mario brothers... and I just thought how cool it was the way they were jerking the control pads around in the air. To my dismay, I found out that doens't make mario move, pushing the control pad does. :-)

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yes and yes.

- How many games do you have for it?
Around 350+ now, and trying to make it grow.

fav. game:The Legend of Zelda

Others: SMB(All), Commando, duck hunt

Infuriated me: I repeatidly smashed my NES controller to the ground breaking it into bits during a dungeon in Zelda. I kept dying.

1st time: I was at my cousins house, and he had SMB 1 and 2. I beat 2.

Own? Now? My stepbrothers had owned it for a while, and then gave it to me. When they moved out, they just left it behind.

Games: I currently own 4 NES systems, and about 40 games. Im not a serious collector for this system, but i take em if i see em.

Stories: My mom recently found me 2 NES systems and some games.

A subject near and dear to my heart. I think a lot of this was covered in a very special issue of Video Zone about four years ago, but since that is a high-priced collector's item now, I'll recount the highlights:

- What is your favorite game on this system?

For me it's Super Mario Bros. 3. The prelaunch anticipation was so amazing, and then the game went and totally lived up to it. Beating SMB3 for the first time felt like a major feat.

- What are some of your other favorites?

SMB1, SMB2 (by which I mean Doki Doki Panic), Punch-Out... Shadow of the Ninja (hee hee), um... oh, it goes on and on.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Mario 2 surprised me for sure. So did Mario 3. Mighty Final Fight sure as heck surprised me... Wizards and Warriors was a total pain in the ass... actually, at that age many games can be infuriating.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Super Mario and Duck Hunt, circa 1987, friend's house. My brother and I had grown up on video games (2600 of course, but Atari 8-bit computer mostly) and so this really amazed us. We were only 7 and 6, but we decided we had to have it. So we worked together, pooled our resources, and carried out a strategically sound plan of acting like the two most incredibly obnoxious brats on the face of the planet until our parents bought us the Action Set.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Easter 1988. After the hunt for our baskets, our parents asked us to go and make their bed. We'd never been asked to do this before so we had no clue what was up. So we walk into their bedroom, and there's the NES. Originally, we hooked it up to the composite monitor in the computer room, right under the Atari 800XE.

- How many games do you have for it?

Many.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

Too many...

What is your favorite game on this system?

I'd have to go with Zelda.

What are some of your other favorites?

The other Zelda. The Marios. Metroid. Blades of Steel. Bionic Commando. Ice Hockey. Punchout. The RBIs

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Zelda definitely suprised me. So did the first Mario.

Bionic Commando could be infuriating. As could Wizards and Warriors. But I always liked them both.

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Yup - it was Super Mario Bros. and I was blown away by it. This thing kicked the butt of any system I had seen before.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

My sister and I pooled our resources and picked up our NES at Consumers Distributing. Got it home and played Super Mario Bros. for four hours straight. She doesn't even like games really.

I sold my NES for a leather jacket back in high school (say 4 years later).

Picked up another one once I decided I wanted one of all the major systems.

How many games do you have for it?

A meager 35ish

Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

Unlike the Atari 2600 I don't have any stories really. I have many fond memories of playing the NES both at my own place and at a friend's place but none stick out as tellable.

- What is your favorite game on this system?
Wow...soo many good games. I'd say it's a tie between Castlevania 3 and Mega Man 2.

- What are some of your other favorites?
Archon, All Castlevanias, All Mega Mans, All Ninja Gaidens,
Arkanoid.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
Surprised? The cinemas in Ninja Gaiden 1 and the cool story of Metal Gear 1. Infuriated - the Rock Monster in Mega Man 1!

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
Honestly, I don't think I remember the first time I saw one or played one, but I'd swear the first game I ever saw on it was SMB and I thought it was damned cool!

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
No...I was banned from having a video game system back in the day. My parents wouldn't let me have one unless I could pay for it myself cause they felt they were a waste of time. I never got one until well after the PSX and Saturn came out. My first system was the SNES, followed by the Genesis, but I DID have a subscription to Nintendo Power all thru the NES days and I read EVERY issue cover to cover in case I got the chance to play the games at a friend's house! :)

- How many games do you have for it?
About 50 including imports. I'd have more, but here in Ontario (at least where I am) even the common carts are expensive, compared to the $3 each I was paying back in Oregon.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
I don't really have a lot of gaming stories...most of my gaming and marathon gaming began well after the NES days and never really spread back to the NES sadly.

- What is your favorite game on this system?
That's a tough question. Probably SuperMarioBros3. Super hyped but super good.

- What are some of your other favorites?
Anything by Nintendo was usually really good. The arcade classics like Donkey Kong and Popeye usually get a lot of play time now. Ninja Gaiden and Contra are tops when it comes to sidescrollers. I'm pretty sure thats why they're being updated on the newer consoles: Nostalgia.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
Heh, any LJN game that turned out to be playable. LJN had a horrible track record (x-men, Friday the 13th). One day mother bought me Jaws and suprisingly we fell in love with it. It was actually playable!

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action?
I think it had to be at some shop called Savemart circa 86 or 88 (ninja turtles just burst on to the scene). They had a demo unit with Duck hunt. I think my parents witnessed how much I liked it which led to them buying me one.

- What game was it? What was your reaction?
see above

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
see above. BTW, It's sitting on top of my PS2 right now.

- How many games do you have for it?
75-80 with more being bought every weekend

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
Well, NES was my first foray into gaming (minus game&watch and arcades) so I guess it shaped me into the gamer I am today. That of course comes with a lot of baggage now since everyday all we see are rehashes, re-releases and ripoffs of old NES games being sold as "new". I lose a lot of faith in gaming now.

Ah, NES.

- What is your favorite game on this system?

I have many: The Guardian Legend, River City Ransom, Metroid, Final Fantasy, the Ultimate Stuntman, Super Mario Bros 1/3, The legend of Zelda.. I could go on and on.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

The Guardian Legend infuriated me because I couldn't pass the first stage.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I first saw The Legend of Zelda when I was 5 years old. My mom and half sisters were playing it.. I got really excited, and tripped on the cord, falling on my NES. The game reset, and my sisters were angry, but my mom just laughed.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

- What is your favorite game on this system?

I haven't played all that many compared to how many games are actually out there for NES. But, I really really dig Super Mario Brothers 3.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Super Mario Brothers 2
Shadowgate
Star Wars

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

The first Super Mario Brothers. I so suck at that game. No matter how much I played and practice, I'd never get very far and the controller was thrown against the floor more than a few times in frustration.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

The first time I saw a NES was back around '85 - '86? My best friend Marcy had one and she was a whiz at SMB!! That girl new all the warp zones, all the tricks, never fell or died. I think that led to my frustration with the game (see above) because I never could play it well, not even today. At the time, though, I think it was girly competition. I had a jealous streak beyond measure and I couldn't stand when anyone played or performed better than me! ;)

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Yep, we bought a system shortly after Marcy's family bought her one. It was mainly for my little sister and me. The original system we bought was recently found after some closets were cleaned out and it is sitting on my Mom's tv set with Star Tropics in it.

Yep, I also own a system here currently with a small assortment of games. I'd love to get a top-loader, but this one seems to be just fine for now

- How many games do you have for it?

I am at a mere 16 games plus a game genie because I need to cheat to win more often than I'd like to admit! :)

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

I distinctly remember this one Christmas we had after we bought the system. I was also still "in love" with Luke Skywalker at the time and almost everything I wanted had to be Star Wars related. So, obviously, my big request for the holiday was the Star Wars game for NES. I was sooooo excited and made it perfectly clear to my dad that was what I wanted above anything else.

Christmas morning arrives and there are gifts under the tree for my sister, my brother, and myself. My Dad comes over shortly after we start opening stuff up and hands a gift to me and to my sister. I already knew what I was supposed to be getting and the box was just the right shape and weight for a boxed NES cart. I couldn't wait!

I rip into the package which has one of those little tags saying "To: Laura, From: Dad." I'm so happy and peeling off the paper and pull out this box ... At first I was thinking, boy this is weird. The first thing I see is the character Ariel from the Little Mermaid. My heart sinks, but I don't want to hurt my dad's feelings (I was jealous and bratty to my friends, but I never want to make mom or dad sad.) He asked me if I liked it and I was quietly replying "Umm, yeah, this is great. Thanks."

Fortunately for me, my sister being 10 years younger than myself and pretty darn young at the time had no worries of complaining if she didn't get what she wanted. She had opened the gift my dad gave her and found Star Wars for the NES. She gets up and makes no effort to hide that she wanted the "Ariel game" and not this stupid Star Wars. HA!!! Dad had goofed and switched the tags on the presents. So everybody was happy in the end. Funny memories looking back on it after so many years...

SMB 1 or 3

- What are some of your other favorites?

SMB2, Mega Man 2, Duck Hunt, Duck Tales, Punch Out, Excite Bike, Super Off Road, Castlevania, Zelda and Ghost n Goblins!

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Seeing SMB for the first time suprised me, and then SMB3 - what graphics and game play wow! Goonies 2 and Ghost n Goblins used to frustrate me loads!

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Playing round a friends house when I was a kid; he was the first in my class to get a NES. Seeing SMB for the first time was awesome, I was like "I've gotta get one of these babies!"

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Yeah I had one 'back in the day'! Probably a year or so after its original release over here in the UK. Sold it later on to get a SNES! Bought one off a friend about 1999-2000 to replace the one I sold as a kid!

without a doubt... Blades of Steel!!!!
- What are some of your other favorites?
Super Dodge Ball is a VERY close second to Blades of Steel. Strider, the only NES game I've ever beat.... I know, I know....lame. Those are all-time faves some new faves since I started collecting again a couple years ago include Palamedes and Pyramid.
- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
after only having played the 2600 and C64, they all were a bit of a surprise. Bases Loaded 2 STILL pisses me off. It's just baseball but that damn game has got my number.
- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action?
a buddy of mine had one, this was when I was in college, back in 1986.

it was Ivan Stewarts Super Off-Road, I thought, that's pretty cool but do they have a hockey game?
- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
I bought the system in 1986 and still have it. I've had as many as 7 but right now just my original and a top-loader.
- How many games do you have for it?
around 430
- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
two of my fondest memories involve games I've already mentioned. One is beating Strider which my friend Gary and I did in one night save the last level. That had to wait a few months till he came home from Michigan State for the summer. The other was my long run as Blades of Steel Champion. My final victory was extremely lopsided, something like 25-3 and was achieved while I was so drunk I could barely stand. My opponent was cold sober. I was never challenged again. Ah yes, a proud moment.

My favorite game is Star Tropics.

- What are some of your other favorites?
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Faxanadu, Adventures of Rad Gravity, Zelda II, SMB 1,2,3, Mega Man 2,3,4,6, Battle of Olympus, Solstice, Darkwing Duck, Low G Man, Shadow Warriors, Castlevania games too much to list

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
Star Tropics, Adventures of Rad Gravity, Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt
Section Z, Burai Fighter and Isolated Warrior are games that infuriated me.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action?
Yes, Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt :D

What game was it? What was your reaction?
See above. Amazed. The graphics were fantastic. The fact that you can shoot ducks with a gun.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yes (well it was my brother's, but I played it too). I still have a NES with many games.

- How many games do you have for it?
Around 370

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
Well I bought Star Tropics back in the day but it wasn't the plan. I got some money from my brother to get a game for him (he almost never went to the store himself), and the game to get was Dragon's Lair because I saw it for a sale a few days ago. Dragon's Lair was away, and I decided to buy Star Tropics with my brother's money because of the cool pictures. We both liked the game very much, I'm still happy Dragon's Lair (which is not good I heard) was gone.

Now here's a good topic...

- What is your favorite game on this system?

Castlevania.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Castlevania II & III, Bionic Commando, Gradius, Gradius II (Famicom) Life Force, Contra, Super C, Monster Party, Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Grafitti (Famicom), Ninja Gaiden, Jackal, Ghosts 'N Goblins, Mega Man 2, SMB 2 and a whole bunch of others.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Castlevania surprised me. I thought it looked like crap until I played it and found out that it was one of the best games ever created (see the story below).

Muppet Adventure: Chaos At The Carnival infuriated me. I had no idea that there were games THIS BAD out for the NES. I actually made my brother take it back to the video store and return it.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

That had to have been sometime in '86 or '87 at my friend Len's house. The game was SMB, and my reaction was one of pure astonishment. I had never seen a game like this before.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Absolutely I owned one back then! Unfortunately, my system bit the dust sometime in '94, and I ended up getting a Super 8 for my SNES to replace it.

- How many games do you have for it?

Let me see... 91, including my three Famicom games.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

I've got plenty, but this is my favorite:

I recall seeing Castlevania 1 & 2 in a video store shortly after getting my NES. I looked at them both, thought they looked stupid, and then rented Skate Or Die or something... anyway, a year or so later my parents say they're going to the store and they're going to pick me up a game. So I give them a list of games to choose from - 1942, 1943, Castlevania and Castlevania II. They came back later with Castlevania. My brother had also recieved a game and he wanted to play his first, so I let him. I set Castlevania down, put a notebook on top of it and forgot it even existed until over an hour later I picked up the notebook and there it was. So I opened it, tried it out and completely fell in love with it. ^_^

The odd part of the story is that to this day, I have no idea why I put either Castlevania on the list I gave to my parents. I thought they looked stupid... why in the world would I want them to get me a game that I thought looked stupid? It's something I may never figure out...

- What is your favorite game on this system?

Crystalis, aka "God Slayer." There are NES games that play better, look better, and sound better, but in my opinion, nothing quite captured the feeling of a massive epic adventure like Crystalis did.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Mega Man 2, The Ninja Gaiden series, Super Mario Bros. 3, Final Fantasy, Vice: Project Doom, The Guardian Legend, Mega Man 3, Super C, and Metroid.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

I never expected Vice: Project Doom to be so cinematic and satisfying, especially since it looked like another boring multi-genre game on the surface.

As for infuriation, I'll never forget the time I was slogging through StarTropics and I needed to put in a code to start the Sub-C. You were supposed to put water on a "letter" that came with the game, thus revealing the code. Unfortunately, I'd left the game's box and instructions at my grandparents' house, five states away. Even though nearly every kid my age had an NES, it took forever to find someone with StarTropics.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

While all of my friends eventually owned the NES, the first time I saw it in action was on visit to my grandparents. The kid next door had a system and was playing Fist of the North Star when I walked in. I tried it and thought it was boring, so we popped in Rygar. From that point on, I wanted "a Nintendo."

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

. . . . and I didn't get one until after several years of good grades and ceaseless nagging convinced my parents. I still have my old system, and it's held up better than most.

- How many games do you have for it?

About thirty. I've bought dozens over the years, but I've gotten rid of everything but my favorites.

What is your favorite game on this system?
It would have to be Zelda, my friend let me borrow it, we took it to another friends house, and accidentally erased his game to start a new one....wow was he pissed. 2 weeks later i got my own and my grade then soon fell.

What are some of your other favorites?
Kid Iic, Exitebike, SMB(123), Rygar, Blaster Master, baseball stars, tecmo bowl, rbi baseball, zelda2, rc pro am, micro machines, dragon warrior, adventure island........

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
SMB, i mean wow, what a leap from atari. it was the only none sports games i could get my brother to play too. just to read in nintendo power to do some of the odd walk throu blocks tricks and stuff. it was great.

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action?
What game was it? What was your reaction?
Saw it at Sears, six corners Chicago. I wanted one after that.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
I got it around 85 i think, sold my atari at the garage sale to get to money to get it. I sold off my NES to buy an SNES. Rebought a top loader at k-mart when it was 19.95, gave that to my neighbor 5 years+ ago. wish i didn't

How many games do you have for it?
at that time about 20 or so. always renting really..or selling and buying others.

Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us
my neighbor that i knew for years was in her 70's. Everytime i went over to her house when she was not teaching(summer time). i would see this red light from behind some plastic. I swore i seen this for years really. one time i asked what it was, she confessed, it was an NES. and her passion was Adventure island. she didn't want to loose her spot anytime. she would pause it and turn the tv off for hours, days. but anyways she always hid it, she was embarrased to be playing it at her age. she is her 80's and still plays it.

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action?
What game was it? What was your reaction?
Yes, I do. It was my brother's birthday, in July, the summer after the NES was released. We always vacationed for the first two weeks in July, so my brother usually got stuck w/fishing lures & equipment, candy, and some new shorts as presents. But we were relatively close to civilization this time, and my parents went into town and bought him the NES. The first time I actually saw one IN action, live, was after he took it out of the box and we hooked it up. Up until that point, we'd still been playing our 2600! SMB/Duckhunt came w/the system, so SMB was the first game I ever saw, and boy, were our socks knocked off (coming from a 2600 point of view!). I still remember tournaments of Duckhunt with my brothers & sister..

I don't have an NES now, but I do have ready access to one (as well as a HUGE library of games), AND I have a SNES and a Super 8 adapter and I own about twenty games myself.

- What is your favorite game on this system?
its a tie between Tetris 2 and Dr Mario

- What are some of your other favorites?
:) Shingien, Elevator Action, River City Ransom, Krazy Kreatures, Klax, Qix, Burgertime, Bomberman, Paperboy, Q*Bert, Galaga, Gyruss, and Rampage. :)
and probably will like some of the Sachen games which I started buying this last CGE.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
Krazy Kreatures because I never heard of the game until I started collecting for the system and I found the game to be fun and addicting.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
Yes, it was at my cousin's house. He was playing Super Mario Bros.
I took one look at the game and was terrified of that game. I suck at games like that.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
nope. I bought mine in the mid 1990's.

- How many games do you have for it?
725+ unique games and about 200-300 extras. I have limited space for my collection so its hard for me keep track of 18 game systems I have now.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
none that I can think of now.

What is your favorite game on this system?

This is tough, but i bought a game at my neighbor's garage sale, Mike Tyson's Punchout, I'd never heard of it and must have played it for months with some other neighbors, obviously i was quite young, probably somewhere around 1994 or so......

What are some of your other favorites?

since then i've introduced myself to super dodge ball and crash and the boys(its a shame the other crash and the boys game never made it), contra, the SMB series was always a good one, and as a young kid i was always in love with the game pinball, every time i was at the video store i would just stare at it.......i rarely rented it too......i think it had something more to do with the graphics on the box, and when i rented it i was so disappointed, but the box looks cool

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

I finally played metroid, usually i sway away from the crowd so when everybody i knew loved metroid i was determined not to play it, and so i never did until late 02, and let me tell you how disappointed i was, maybe i just didn't get into it enough but it just bothered me, maybe its one of those games that you have to have a history with before you love it, not bashing people for liking it either, i can see it as desirable but......not for me

Infuriated?

any/all Camerica games, they look really awesome, they're kind of neat, but talk about tricky games, and i just started playing them recently, and dont spend much time on them

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

the Xmas right after we got one, i don't even really remember getting it for xmas......but we sure did and the first game i saw in action was duck hunt, my dad was playing with all my uncles, they proceded to play the system until me and my brother liked it, then they wanted nothing to do with it >:(

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

yes, i owned about 100 games until i was about 10, put them away, sold them when i was 14, or a great majority of them, the horrible games, about 75 of them went and a system but i kept about 25 games and a system with the power pad, and didn't decided i needed to get this stuff back out until just before christmas this past year, when i upped my collection

How many games do you have for it?
somewhere around 150-200 complete, the rest of them up to 275 games are just loose, and about 130 sealed

Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

yes, do you know how many times i beat SMB 3 and got froze outside the door, do you know how much that troubles a 6 yr olds soul? it might have been because i used game genie, but nonetheless, the game was not finished and it took me about 4 times to get in the door and actually conquer the game, and i messed it up many times after that........it was SMB 3 so you cant just beat it once when you are that age, its more like, when you cant remember a day gone by without beating it, then you can retire it

- What is your favorite game on this system?

I do best not to play favorites, but if I were a gambling man, I'd put my money on River City Ransom. Hands down. I can (and have) play this game all day with friends and never truly be tired of it.

- What are some of your favorites?

The Ninja Gaiden games, Super Mario games, Mega Man games, Chip N Dale's Rescue Rangers, 3D World Runner, Mappy Land, Adventures of Lolo, TMNT3, etc.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Again, River City Ransom. Even now, there's so little to really compare to that game (excluding Downtown Special). I remember renting it for the first time because the back of the box had some neat pictures of the game. Boy, am I glad I picked it up. I've barely been able to put it down since. I still find myself amazed at some of the things you can do in that game. I think every genre has an "IT" game. Barring any further ventures into the beat-em-up, IMO it's safe to say that RCR will remain supreme among it's peers.

As for infuriating, definitely the Castlevania and Mega Man games.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Sure, I was 3 or 4 (can't remember which). The first time I even heard about it was at a Curtis Mathes that was right next my brother's optometrist's office. I've always been somewhat of a fan of window browsing, if only to build up an imagination of what it would be like have these things. He had just finished getting a check-up and we were headed home, but my brother and I begged my mom to let us go see if they had anything new. Of course she couldn't resist us. Upon entering, the first thing that caught my eye was this HUGE tv (well, huge at the time was probably like 27" or so) that looked like it was playing some kind of game. It wasn't the television we were after. As fate would have it, it was surely Super Mario Bros that we had stumbled upon. So naturally, we sat there...and gawked.

I'm not too sure about where the world went during that time, but it didn't matter. I'm guessing my mom was around looking at videos or something because I think we were there for awhile. Eventually, the time came when we would be dragged away from the screen, drooling and dreaming. Not without a fight. We begged our mom to ask the sales guy about it...what it was and how much. After a little discussion, we walked out with our heads down. It was too expensive. At the time, we didn't have very much money. In fact, my mom couldn't get a job at the time, so we were on welfare and lived in the upstairs room of my granny's house. We even slept in the same bed. It's not that we weren't happy or content though...we just had a new obssession in our lives to contend with now. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be much hope. Thankfully, the guy kinda knew the situation we were in and pretty much invited us to come by any time we were "in the neighborhood". We lived down the street. You figure it out. :)

(Actually, one of my frequent returns there also turned out to be my first experience with the 1-Up cheat in SMB.)

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Okay, jumping ahead to that Christmas. We now had a number of experiences with the NES already, but it still didn't feel the same because it wasn't "ours". Christmas Day came and we were hopeful but not expecting. After going through present after present, no NES was in sight. Then, my family came out with a BIG present that was for both us. There it was...the NES Action Set. It turned out my mom told my uncle about it, and he had been paying it off through layaway. Thank goodness for good ol' layaway! I can't even remember how long we played with it, but I'm pretty sure I slept with controller in hand. I didn't have a lot to base Christmas off of given my early age, so that was definitely memorable. Unfortunately, I had to sell most of my systems in order to get the next. It was a cycle.

Don't hurt me or anything, but I mostly rely on roms for older systems now. This not because I don't have the money or anything, but I simply don't have that much room for everything. It's just much more conveinent for me. I'm not a collector anyway, so it's not like I have thousands of roms sitting on my computer either. I do have a few carts lying around, but no system though. :/

- How many games do you have for it?

A few. Not too sure where they are.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

Oh, too many. More memories than stories though. Some great NES memories off the top of my head:

- The Super Mario 3 commercial. Nothing got me more hyped up about that game than hearing hundreds of people shouting "MARIO! MARIO!", and seeing them all form a huge Mario logo that encompassed the Earth. Good stuff indeed.

- Every time a new issue of Nintendo Power would come in. I couldn't wait to come home from school to find them laying on the table!

- Trading games with other people at school. This was pretty much mandatory, as not everybody could afford a lot of games. If you had a NES, you better trade up.

- Going to this mom-and-pop rental place called Top Gun. The people that worked there might as well have been family. I was there at LEAST every week after school. Whenever a new game came in, I was always on the list to get it first. Ahh, I can still smell the newly laminated manuals... :)

- The Wizard. I loved that movie back then. Dunno about now. I'm sure it's terrible by standards, but if I like it I like it.

- My class would have these sort of Read-a-Thon-type dealies, and everyone that read a certain amount of books would be given a certificate for one of those little personal pizzas at Pizza Hut. Needless to say, I read a LOT of books. I loved going after school with my mom to pick it up because while we waited, I'd entertain myself with the Play Choice machine they had. Mmm...pizza and games.

- The NES was the system that built up my love just for TALKING about games.

- I remember my brother getting super mad at me every time I would "accidentally" hit him while playing beat-em-ups.

Oh man, the NES -- still my all time favorite system.

I had a Atari 2600 as a young kid, but never played the system much. I played it on and off for around five years, and when I got my Commodore 128 for Christmas of 84 it was that system that got most of my time. Still, seeing comericals for the NES in 1987 and hearing about the system for the last year and a half I mentioned it to my folks a couple times. I never actually ASKED for it, mind you -- just said it looked good. I was surprised at Christmas of that year to find a gift that was marked open last. Well, more opening, and there was a NES. I was quite happy. I was only 11 at the time but I could defnetily understand the fun nature of it all. The other gift was Top Gun and Pinball -- the only other games, my Mom said, they could find in the stores! Top Gun was a nice game (VERY hard) and of course SMB kept me busy.

My birthday is Feb 26th, so it was'nt very long before I got a light gun and Hogan's Ally. Great game. For Easter I got Zelda -- oh man, what a game! (Playing Wind Waker right now really brings back the memories.)

Later on that year my Mom surprised me. She managed a video store then, for a few years, and her boss decided to have the store start renting games. This was shortly after Blockbuster had won it's law suit aganist Nintendo and knew they could do it. My Mom asked me for advice on what to buy. For years I used Nintendo Power, my friends, and rentals from other stores to advise her on buying NES games for the store. They finally switched over to SNES and Genesis in the summer of 1992. I had the SNES but not the Genesis so someone else in the store took over for the Genesis.

Let me tell you, this was a godsend! Being able to get my hands on brand new games, for free, and hold on to them for several days up to a week. The popular games I could'nt hold on to for long, but at least it let me decide what to ask for. Some of the unpopular games I could hold on to for weeks. I could also ask her to bring homes games for me for a 'rental', free of course. It was incentive for me to keep my grades good and my nose clean, and my folks never bothered me on my game playing as long as I did other things and kept my grades up.

Other found memories -- going to the Nintendo World's Championships in 1990, all night gaming sessions with friends, trying to get some of the games to work in the early 90's as my NES started to get older, and trying to make sure I always hit RESET to save the game on those batteries! I also would record some games and watch them later so I could show off or learn how to do things better.

I got a SNES for Christmas of 1991, but I also continued to use my NES (and my C128, for that matter) until I went off to college in September 1994. Both systems were pretty much gone by that point (I think Dragon Warrior IV was my last rental). I swaped my NES and the games (I probaly had about 40 at the end) to a friend in return for other stuff.

Today I usually play my favorites on the emulator, or for the games that have been released on Game Boy systems. I paid for a adapater and bought a second type NES Controller from Nintendo for a more realsitic gaming experience. (Those controllers are so much better then the original!)

I have a ton more memories, but need to keep this note readable. LOL

- What is your favorite game on this system?
For old times sake, I'm gonna have to say Ninja Turtles.
- What are some of your other favorites?
Punch-Out, Double Dragon games, SMB 1 & 3.
- What games surprised you?
Tecmo Super Bowl, to this day its still the only sports game I like.
- Infuriated you?
Rampage, I kept on thinking I was going to get somewhere. I played for hours, nothing new happened.
- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
It was at my uncles house. They let me play duckhunt. The dog annoyed me. I begged my dad for one, to no avail. I mostly wanted one to play TMNT, cuz i was a huge fan.
- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
I did not, I picked one up about 3 years ago to nurse my childhood. I finally got what I always wanted.
- How many games do you have for it?
About 40, all found in the wild. I'm not collecting.
- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
I have found mountains of NES stuff in thw wild. My trade pile it huge. I was looking anywhere for video game related stuff last summer, which included asking all of my friends if they had anything laying in a garage somewhere. I asked the girl I know, she said she had an old NES "zapper" at her house. I asked if I could have it. She said she normally would have given it to me, but that it wasnt hers, and that I didnt want it anyways. When I asked why, she told me that it was her sisters boyfriends. The boyfriend was living with them. Apparently the zapper had been used in an inappropriate part of the female anatomy, thanks to the boyfriend. I very quikly passed on taking the zapper. :puke:

fav- RYGAR
other favs- soloman's key, impossible mission II, baseball stars, kickle cubicle, tecmo bowl, tyson's punch out, vegas dream
most frustrating game- Zelda (just can't get into it)
moment- i can remember when i first beat Ligar (rygar), i had been playing it night and day until i figured out the points thing. i got this spot where i think the germans come out and you can go back and forth to make a lot of them appear. kept doing that until my points maxed out. anyway went on to defeat Ligar. ran out the house, and down the hill to my friends house (left the ending on) and ranted and raved about it. to this day my brother says he beat it first.
total game count- not sure but definately over 100, and getting more by the week

- What is your favorite game on this system?

I've probably spent more time with the first Bases Loaded than any other game. I've played through multiple seasons, keeping my own stats on paper.

- What are some of your other favorites?

I still love to go back and beat Rygar. Punch Out, although I've still never beat Tyson, I suck! And I always loved Shadowgate and Deja Vu.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

I think I had Mega Man for a year or two before I realized that you could use the boss' weapons after you beat them. Really opened the game up.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I was a die hard 2600 fan. I scoffed at the NES when it came out. My main sticking point was the controller,... how were you supposed to play on a system that didn't even have a proper joystick? That opinion died the second I first played SMB. My friend and I were convinced that each time we found a secret that we must have been the first people to do so.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Yes and yes. The connector is really worn out on the one I have now though. I could really use a top loader. My original system and most of my games are at my mother's house.

- How many games do you have for it?

Only 34, right now.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

I remember a snow day when my friend and I had some money to burn. Since his mom wouldn't take us, we walked a mile or two in a foot of snow to the local K-Mart, just to see what they had. Pickings were slim, but we wanted a new game, so we ended up gambling on Trojan. Oddly enough, we weren't disappointed.

I remember when the only advice on games I had was Ed Semrad's video game reviews in the green pages of the Milwaukee Journal. I bought Deadly Towers on the strength of his review. Although it later found itself as #1 in Seanbaby's 20 Worst NES Games of all Time, I enjoyed it back then.

- What is your favorite game on this system?
It would have to be the Legend of Zelda. This is the first and only game I've played for 24+ hours straight.

- What are some of your other favorites?
Super Mario Bros., Rygar, and Gum Shoe. I'm one of the people who actually beat Gum Shoe and I can remember my hand hurting badly from it.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
Kid Niki - I loved this game but never beat the damned thing! Grr! Definately Ghosts and Goblins the &*^@@^#% game! And Chubby Cherub.. what the hell was that game designer taking?

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
I can't remember the first time I saw it in action, but I fondly remember playing Super Mario Bros. in the arcade.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yep :) I got it as an xmas present when it came out. I was 12 in 1986. I got the whole robot set and 4-5 black boxed games. It is a fond memory. I ended up selling it a few years later for PC parts. I didn't own a console again until the Dreamcast came out. Then I started buying up classic systems and since the NES was my favorite I've gotten really into it. I'm a seious collector now and want to own every game made.

- How many games do you have for it?
I have around 400 games right now. Some of my favorites are Bubble Bobble 2, Dragon Warrioir 1-3, and a Caltron 6-in-1. Still looking for Stadium Events and NWC gold :)

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
I sold my original system through a classified ad. The family that bought it came to my home and had a toddler that actually peed on my carpeting!! I guess I had a smelly reminder of selling my childhood toys.

While I don't have any clear cut NES favorites, I do like a wide variety of games. It's hard to pick just 1 favorite because there are so many quality games on the system.

I remember when my dad brought a NES home. First game that was packed and the first one we played(my brother and I) was Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt/Track and Field.

I still love the NES..owning 3 systems and 44 games. None of the sytems work though(toaster model) so I'll have to replace the connectors very soon.

I love the NES. There are still about 10-20 games out there that I enjoyed as a kid, yet do not own right now. I have mostly the rarer stuff like the American Video releases(I have 3) and 3 different unlicensed Tengen carts(black cart). I'm going to focus only on games that I enjoyed as a kid when it comes to getting more NES games.

Ah, the beloved NES.

What is your favorite game on this system?
Tie between Metroid and Zelda. Metroid was my first game...didn't know what to expect, then...the rest is history.

What are some of your other favorites?
-All of the games I have now: Kid Icarus, Rygar, Metal Gear, Double Dragon II and III, RIVER CITY RANSOM!!, Castlevania III, Bionic Commando, Zanac, Zelda II, Blaster Master, plus Gauntlet, Punch Out!!, SMB 2, Mega Man

What games surprised you?
-River City Ransom. A friend of mine lived blocks away from a local rental store (sadly Shamrock is no more.., :( ), and had this, he said, "we HAVE to play this!!" Holy FUN. Got it again recently after having forgotten about it for a decade. Sheer genius. Sad a 16-bit sequel never came to the U.S. Would have been AWESOME on SNES. RCR was sadly overlooked at the time. Truly original.
-Metal Gear. It was hyped in Nintendo Power and sounded cool, turned out to be a really innovative game. Metal Gear Solid 2? Never heard of it.

Infuriated you?
-Ninja Gaiden. Cool game, but CHEAP ASS. I don't care to have it now.
-Rush n' Attack. See above.
-Batman. See above >:( Good graphics and music, though. Hmmm...maybe it would be cool play again...
-TMNT--ridiculously hard.
-Ghost n' Goblins on this and any system---GRRRR!!! DIE FU#$ER!!!

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action?
-A friend had it--he always seemed to get the cool stuff first...a little spoiled...GI Joe, etc. He had Zelda and SMB. It was winter 1987. I can still remember that. We'd play SMB, go do his paper route, come back out of the cold, get hot choc, play more SMB. Everytime I play it (All Stars) I think of that. We were so addicted...it was SO hard, we HAD to get further.

And Zelda...of course I knew of it from the commercials with the insane twitchy big-haired dude yelling "ZELDA!!" and "Oktoraks!! Tek-Tites!! PEA-HATS!!!" I remember thinking, "what's with this guy?" Y'see, I was 12 at the time, hadn't played our Colecovision with Atari 2600 adaptor in a few years, suddenly was wowed by the NES... 1987-89 the NES was HUGE in my junior high school! I remember people even called the cartridges "tapes". Man, everybody talked about it...well, maybe mostly dorks...a select elite knew about the Genesis and waited...

Did you own the system "back in the day"?
Yep!! Convinced my mom to help me buy it in 1987--I think I payed half of the control deck and Metroid separately (which was at least $30 at Best Buy!! X_x )
As I bought the games myself, and they were $$$$, I only had a few--Zelda II (that was over $40 when released--holy merciful crap!), Bionic Commando (a bionic arm? I'm SO there), Gauntlet, Zanac, Metroid. It wasn't in good shape by the time I sold it to get a Genesis in 1990. Of course I still have the 'ol Genny.

How about now?
Very recently I bought a refurbished NES--those new 72-pin connectors are a dream come true--and all my faves. Found a webpage that showed how to open up a controller and clean it. WOW they're nasty.
After the SNES I didn't get into any new systems, and strangely I haven't really played any modern games since the arcade version of MACE: the Dark Age. I think I really prefer the 16-bit era. But I have the most fondness for the NES. The games look a bit crusty now, but still are just plain FUN! I've seen people say a lot that games were more challenging then--I really believe that. Atari 2600 and NES games were challenging and kept you coming back for more. And the games were so simple! Modern game designers could learn a lot...
Plus it just reminds me of those years. Nostalgia's a funny thing.

Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
-Nothing really exciting...I got so pissed at Gauntlet that I threw it...never worked after that!!
Oh yeah...an older friend of ours (she was a senior in high school) was playing Rygar and getting pissed at the green bat-things in the forest, cursing them, saying "I'll kill you you little fu$@ers... >:( " My dad was coming upstairs when she said that, and he quietly went back downstairs...ah, memories of violence. :-D
When I bought the "control deck", it came with the Nintendo Player's Guide...man, I paged through that thing so much pages fell out. I wish they didn't have every single map to Metroid, made it too easy...without a map, Metroid's much more fun. That ratty Player's Guide was still in parents' house until they moved 5 years ago...oh well.

I bought my first nes back in 85. My favorite games for the system was Alpha Mission, Iron Tank, and Tiger heli. If I had those games again, i would buy another system just for those games alone....Ohyeah, i almost forgot about Graduis...love that shit!!!!!!!!!! :D

-Metal Gear. It was hyped in Nintendo Power and sounded cool, turned out to be a really innovative game. Metal Gear Solid 2? Never heard of it.I love Metal Gear, but I've only played the original version on MSX2. ;)

- What is your favorite game on this system?

Very hard one to choose from!!!
I guess my favorite is Battletoads, cause played this one so addicted that finished before the guys from any videogame mag.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Ninja Gaiden series,
Castlevania series,
Super Mario series,
Mega Man series,
Gyruss (!!!),
Double Dragon series,
and at least a hundred others....
Hey! This list is too great!!!!

- What games surprised you?

Battletoads (fantastic challenge, great music, giant bosses, is this 8-bit???)
PinBot (I never understood what the Bot says!!!)
Super Mario Bros 2 (what the hell this one had with the original???)
Rad Racer (when I was pissed off trashing the controller the end sequence appeared... coolio!!!)

- Infuriated you?

8 Eyes
And one piece of shit that I can't remember the name of. Its about a damn slow and tiny spaceship that is easily exploded by anything. Took 2 hours to go into the second screen - not the second level.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Yeah! It was back in 88, I was a youngster crying to my fathers: "I want my Odyssey!!" - I had sold the machine with 12+ carts, including "Clay Pigeon" (what a mess!!!)...
The first NES a saw was a Famicom in the house of a Jap friend of mine.
Super Mario Bros was running, and I thought: "fuck the odyssey! I want this piece of shit!!!"

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Obviously!
I have 2 NES and 2 clones.

- How many games do you have for it?

100+

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

A lot, but no time to tell.... sorry!

- What is your favorite game on this system?

It's hard to just pick one, but I'll say Destiny of an Emperor.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Star Tropics, Tiles of Fate, Double Dragon, Double Dragon II, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 3, Mega Man 2, Mega Man 3, River City Ransom, Ice Hockey, Kirby's Adventure...

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Some of the stages in Battletoads pissed me off. Holy christ... I could never beat that game @_@... Double Dragon III pissed me off, too. I had trouble just finishing the first stage on it.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I remember seeing it firsthand at a friends house. He had Super Mario Bros. and I think a Donkey Kong game of some sort. But yeah.... we ended up playing Super Mario all night. Yeah, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread...

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yeah, I had one back then and still have it.

- How many games do you have for it?

I probably have about 50 or so games for it. I had more, but I got rid of a bunch years back. I kind of regret that now, since I got rid of about 100 or so of them for next to nothing...

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

Many, but I don't have much time to say at the moment. [/i]

Oh, how I love this system.

-What is your favorite game for this system?
That's a toss-up: Kirby's Adventure and Super Mario Bros. 3. Both are I feel the pinacles of their genre.

-What are some of your other favorites?
Legend of Zelda, Kickle Cubicle, Adventures of LoLo, and Mega Man 2.

-What games surprised you/infuriated you?
Surprised me was how cool Kickle Cubicle was. Infuriated me was when I got home and started playing Deadly Towers. How I loathe that game...

-Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action?
When it first was plugged in at my house. I was about 2 at the time, it was a Chritmas present for my sister and she let me play it with her. I was Luigi.

-Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
I had it back in the day, and I still have that first NES. It stopped working probably about two years ago, and now I have three: the broken one, one not working right, and one that works.

-How many games do you have for it?
229 at last count.

-Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
When we first got the NES in my house, I would play it for so long, my parents would have to pry me off of it to do ANYTHING. LOL I would just sit and play it, sort of an electronic babysitter. My sister would come home with her boyfriends and just watch me for a while, I'd be playing SMB or something like that. Good times...

- What is your favorite game on this system?

Almost 800 games...I'll have to grab one out of a hat and say: Blaster Master. I got a lot of mileage out of this one as a kid, exploring the whole subterranean world. I actually really liked Golgo 13 too.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Bionic Commando was really innovative. Punch-Out is still a classic. I've played just about all of them and there are more that I like than dislike.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Orb-3D surprised me. I thought it was a kids game and it turned into a nifty variation of Pong. The "sex scene" in Golgo 13 was pretty surprising. The first time I was told about getting to the minus world in Super Mario Brothers and then pulling it off after trying all night was pretty awesome. The last stage in Ninja Gaiden really pissed me off. Fighting the final boss in Ironsword is downright frustrating. Figuring out what the hell to do in Overlord is depressing.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I was at a friend's house and he had just gotten Castlevania and Ghosts N Goblins. I didn't want my mom to get me an NES at the time because we were hurting financially, but good ol' mom surprised me pretty good with the NES package, complete with R.O.B.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

I've been playing straight since around 1986 (or perhaps early 1987). I consider myself perhaps the most diehard NES player in existence. This sounds kinda sad, but I have yet to play a game for a system newer than the original Playstation. Actually, I do have a Gameboy Advance. I am still plowing through NES games and hope to reach my goal of finishing/playing through every US-released NES game sometime in the next couple of years. 29 games left, but they are doozies.

- How many games do you have for it?

I have quite a few, but I don't really collect them. I did for awhile, but have sold games on eBay sporadically to make a few bucks. I am guilty of actually buying games on eBay just to get the manual so I can make it through the game. Sardius' manual archive has saved me quite a few bucks :)

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

Heh. I kept a game on pause for about 3 days when I had to go away for a weekend. It was actually still paused when I came home!!

I don't really like the game Predator, despite public opinion.

I played through the first 3 levels of Ikari Warriors and had the game on my "Games Beaten" list for 3 years before I discovered that you had to throw a grenade at the corner of a desk to access the hidden staircase to Level 4. I actually had Fist of the North Star on there for a year or so before I read that you had to play through the game WITHOUT CONTINUING to play the final level.

I've written several Walkthroughs for some of the lesser known NES games (has anyone here even played Legend of Prince Valiant?). You can find them at gamefaqs. Super Pitfall seems to be the most popular.

That's about it.

- What is your favorite game on this system?

It'd have to be The Legend of Zelda. Just the sheer joy of exploration from bombing holes in rocks and burning bushes to discover hidden secrets makes for a simply enjoyable experience.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Hopefully I can keep this semi-short LOL :

Megaman 2 - Sure this may have been the first step on the way to many hundreds of sequels/updates/remakes for various systems over the past 15 years -- but, it contradicts the old adage of the sequel not living up to the original.

Contra - Granted I never finished the game without the trusted, timeless, and trademark Konami Code(tm) but still even with the code the game presented quite a challenge with hordes of aliens and whatnot to blast through.

Super Mario Bros. 3 - Because any 'best of' list of NES games would not be complete without at least one Mario title. Do I even need to explain further why I have this on my list?

Dragon Warrior - Even though I'd later graduate on to Square's Final Fantasy series, this is where I got my start with fantasy RPG's...

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Surprised: Probably the original Super Mario Bros. I'll never forget the first time I saw the game on the NES, it was amazing...

Infuriated: Ikari Warriors II: Victoly Road ;) - I don't know; the whole game was just frustrating as &*%& arrrrgh! (Granted it did have some cool weapons, like the boomerangs and the sword.... then again so did Zelda LOL)

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action?
What game was it? What was your reaction?

Wow that was so long ago I don't think so... my earliest memories are of the early stuff (Urban Champion, Mario Bros., Gyromite, Duck Hunt) back when the system first came out.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Again that was so long ago though I know we did... I have one now but I think it needs a new AC adapter or something :(

- How many games do you have for it?

- Excitebike
- Rad Racer
- Metal Gear
- SMB/Duck Hunt/Track Meet
- Legend of Zelda
- Adventure of Link
- Super C
- Metroid
- Kid Icarus
- Hoops
- Golf
- Bases Loaded
- TMNT
- Dragon Power
- Ninja Gaiden
- Super Mario Bros. 3

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

There was the time a few years ago where I finally finished the Legend of Zelda after so many years of playing it...

Stories:
When I was about 8-10 my friend and I were hooked on Contra. I went to his house almost every day after school and we played Contra. We got to where we could beat it without dying. We even made up several 2 player competive games within Contra. What fun.

I can remember when Mario 2 and 3 came out, my (spoiled) friend's mom bought the game that day. On both occasions we stayed awake as long as it took to beat the games. What fun.

To this day is still have fun. It was only 3 yars ago that I finnally beat Castlevania. My friend and I vowed that summer that we would beat it. We even taped ourselves playing to figure out the bosses patterns.

But alas nothing beats getting a bunch of poeple together and playing a season of Tecmo Super Bowl. When a reciever does the "super jump" on a big play, nothing is more exciting.

What is your favorite game on this system?

gi joe, either that or excitebike

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

surprised me? hmm, I thought super mario bros was pretty surprising, I was used to the atari 2600

I got a action set in 1986 i think. I sold it for way to cheap to a friend in high school. I recently traded a music cd for my firends non working NES, I told him it would be easy to fix, and it was.

How many games do you have for it?

maybe 40 right now. I got rid of a lot of them. HEck I even sold a complete dw 3 to a kid my baby sat for for $12(i know if you want to shoot me now, go ahead)

Staying up all night trying to 'finish" exvitebike with myu best friend.

I drove over 60 miles to a gamestop to get a bubble bobble 2 cart only for $15 but when I got there I found out it was gone. :(

I remember redeeming that $5 videogame voucher at toys r us so I *only* paid 50 bucks for dragon warrior 3 instead of 55.

There are probably others, but I cant remember.

- What is your favorite game on this system?
Well, probably the SMB games. The first one mostly because it's classic. 2 and 3 are a great time once in a while too.

- What are some of your other favorites?
I'm no good at Zelda, but I do like Dragon Warrior. I love both games. But I've gotten much further in DW than Zelda. Too bad I can't try out my DW game again which is up to the Dragon Lord because it'll erase the game.. if it's still there. Also Startropics. A game that DESERVES to be remade.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
Surprised and infuriated? I dunno.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
1985. Rescue Squad Christmas Party. Kids in a back room playing a game of some sort. Didn't know fully what it was, but I did remember the game. Super Mario Bros. World 1-2. I remember the blue bricks and black background. I remember just a little, but it was enough to make me want one.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yes. And it's the same one too. Still works. But blinks. Been meaning to fix that.

- How many games do you have for it?
Right now? 134 games. 20 are boxed and complete. 4 of those are dupes. And I have both Metroids.

None that I haven't said already.

- What is your favorite game on this system?
Super Mario Bros. 3. Deep and challenging, and it kept me hooked and wanting more. I think I spent more time with SMB3 than any other NES game.

- What are some of your other favorites?
The Legend Of Zelda (which I'm currently playing through on The Legend Of Zelda Collector's Edition for my new Gamecube as of this writing), Metroid, Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers, Bump 'N Jump, Marble Madness, Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2, Donkey Kong, Duck Hunt, Blaster Master, Double Dragon 2, Duck Tales, Tetris, RC Pro-AM

- What games surprised you?
Pretty much everything.

-What games Infuriated you?
Who Framed Roger Rabbit. As cool as that game was, I could never get very far! And at the time, Dr. Mario (which I have for the SNES now and enjoy), Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link (very frustrating, never got that far on it, but now that I'm older and have it on GC, I vow to beat it someday)

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
I don't remember this clearly, but it was sometime in 1989, and I know one of my friends had it and I must have thought it was the coolest thing because I begged my mom for it. She bought me the Action Set at Montgomery Ward as a birthday present.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"?
Oh yeah, like I mentioned, got it as a birthday gift. I always begged my mom to let me play Nintendo after I got done eating dinner or doing homework. When I wasn't playing Hot Wheel cars or playing outside I was probably playing Nintendo. :P My mom even played it after I went to sleep.

-How about now?
No. My NES died around 1995, we sold it at a garage sale for cheap to a guy who wanted to try to fix it. I wonder if he pulled it off. However, I still have the Zapper light gun that came with it. I might get another NES someday, but I'm not too sure, especially with maintenance and those pesky 72 pin connectors being an issue.

- How many games do you have for it?
N/A today, but back in the day, I seemed to get them only for Birthdays and Christmas, so I'm guessing 7 or 8.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
When I first played Super Mario Bros, I died about 30 times in that second pit. By that time a friend of mine came over and showed me how to run and jump over the pit. :P
I eventually got to 8-4, but I never was able to beat SMB1 until I got Super Mario All-Stars when I owned an SNES. :embarrassed: However, I beat my NES copy of SMB3, but it took me quite a while!

- What is your favorite game on this system?

My favorite game is probably Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. I could just play this game forever. My personal favorite game out of the CV series as well.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Contra

- What games surprised you?

Some obscure favorites of mine are: Dusty Diamond's All Star Softball, Little Samson, Code Name Viper, Jackal, Shatterhand, Desert Commander, Robo Warrior, Solomon's Key, Thunder & Lightning, Vice Project Doom, Battle of Olympus, Bucky O'Hare, Journey to Silius, Xexyz

-What games Infuriated you?

Definitely Ghosts 'n Goblins. That game still pisses me off to no end. I don't believe I've ever beaten the second level. Also the final stage of Ninja Gaiden. If you die on the boss you have to start all over again from the beginning of the last stage.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I first saw my uncle's NES about a year before I got mine in '88. He had Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Metroid, Adventures in the Magic Kingdom and Adventure Island. I absolutely loved it and I wanted one of my own immediately.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"?

I owned one in the 80's, so yeah, I guess I did.

-How about now?

I've had 3 NES's total. The first one broke in about 1993 or 1994 when I was 9 or 10. My dad went out and bought a brand new one that came with Super Mario Bros. 3 (but it wasn't a toploader). That is the one that I still use today, although I replaced the pin connector with a new gold one. I also have a spare in the closet that I've only booted up to see if it works (it did).

- How many games do you have for it?

Currently 645, since I'm trying to collect the US released games.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

- What is your favorite game on this system?

Blaster Master (ingenious!)

- What are some of your other favorites?

Startropics, Crystalis, Metroid, Zelda, Mega Man 2, Castlevania 3, Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, Solstice, SMB3

- What games surprised you?

Blaster Master: I expected a good shoot-em-up, but not an incredible adventure game in which everything matches perfectly. Faxanadu: becasue of it's great atmosphere! Startropics: a game which starts slow and gets with every level better and better, it's as good as Zelda.

-What games Infuriated you?

Ninja Gaiden! It was only my third videogame I played, and the level 6-2 drove me crazy; I couldn't finish it, didn't look at the game for months until Ninja Gaiden 2 was announced. I then tackled the game again, and could finish it in 29 minutes.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I saw it the first time after I bought it, and after I discoverd that I could hop onto the upper bricks in SMB and actually ended up in a warpzone (?WHAT?) I was completely hooked.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"?

I bought it in Oktober 1989. being just two weeks in the US. A couple of weeks before I read in an American newspaper in Germany an ironic column about parents standing in line for certain games for a system that took the US by storm; it was called the "Nintendo system." I wrote the name down, and thought I have to buy the thing, and I expected something like these Ataris I saw once in a while.

-How about now?

I still have the original deck, controllers, NES advantage, box, and wrappings, and evrything works like a charm. In 1996 I bought a new NES Toploader for $25 at ToysRUS, which I never used. The box is in my closet like I bought it 8 years ago.

- How many games do you have for it?

Mainly the games I bought for it back then, I'm not collecting. I picked a couple of games up two years ago. 52 boxed and complete NES games, immaculate like the nitpicker I am, and I finished them all.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

When I opened the box with my NES system, there was an advertisement for a game mag in it, called "Nintendo Power." I smiled, and then I thought "yeah right, that's what I need, a game magazine." I subscribed to it two months later ("cheat codes? maps? great!), A complete collection of NP, around 600 videogame magazines, binders with cheatcodes and self-drawn maps of games, and 150 strategy guides later, I can only shake my head about my smile from 15 years ago.

Anyway...

-What is your favorite game on this system?

Check my name. :) It is a pretty close tie with Tetris though.

- What are some of your other favorites?

Mega Man 2, Tetris, Blaster Master, Dr. Mario, Life Force, Mr. Gimmick, and all of the SMB games. The list goes on and on.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

I was surprised how good Super Mario Bros. 3 looked back in the day. I simply hated Battletoads. I never really practiced so it always pissed me off.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

It was in 1990 at Christmas. My Cousin had the game, and it was Duck Hunt. I was instantly hooked.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Actually I never owned it when I was a kid. I bought a SNES before that, and a Gameboy. Now I own a toaster and a toploader

- How many games do you have for it?

Just passed the 100 mark with 101 games. :)

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

i always wanted to have Zelda and never got it as a child because it was more expensive than any other NES game here and my dad thought that it's not worth the extra money

Well, I feel compelled to post on this somewhat old thread becuase I'm on a roll posting, I'm new and just getting my voice out there, and this thread kind of represents the reason I'm here in the first place.

- What is your favorite game on this system?
God, what a hard question. SMB 1 is probably my all time favorite. That or Mario 3.

- What are some of your other favorites?
Well, I've loved the Dragon Warriors from way back. FF, Mega Man series, LOTW... So many great games, so many memories...

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
When I was younger, playing LOTW was ass hard. FF, too. For a 9 year old, those are freaking hard games. But on the other hand, my little sister tried playing through DW2 a while ago, and she seemed totally stuck, and I couldn't help her. But as a kid, I just breezed through that game...

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Yes, totally. One of my favorite memories! '88 or '89 at Sears. They had that promotional kiosk display with the cone buttons. I played SMB, and dude, that was it. You know, seeing the simple, bright display of an NES screen (particularly SMB 1) really kind of embodies video games for me. Much more pleasing to my eye than newer console games that, phew, just go insane.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Oh yeah, gamer from birth, even before! My parents like to tell me about when they would go to the arcade while my mom was pregnant. Then playing Kangaroo with me hanging in a kid-carrying-backpack thing. So they were always more than happy to support my gaming habits while growing up.

- How many games do you have for it?

Now? About 275. But I've just recently started collecting again, after about a 2 year hiatus.

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

Hudson's Adventure Island, second stage. You know the big blue fish that jumps out of the water? Well, when I was about 9 or 10, a friend of mine and I thought it was just the damned funniest thing to scream "MINNOW!!!" at the top of our lungs whenever he jumped. His parents did not appreciate that at 2:00 in the morning. On that same note, when I was about 16, at a friends birthday party, we were playing the Japanese version of Bomberman 64, and when there was a draw, the Japanese text looked like it spelled "FO", so that was then the fun new word to shout, again at 2:00 in the morning. Now we just get drunk and are too loud anyway, but I'm just waiting for the next game to arouse such craziness.

You know, when I was younger, I always wondered why my parents, who loved games back in their day, never played with us very much. Now these days, I have a really hard time getting into new games, too. I guess after a while some of us just get set in our gaming ways...

To sum up, in case I didn't ramble on long enough, I freakin love the NES. I feel as happy as a clam just to own this stuff and sit there with it. When I start playing, forget about it! Soooooo great.

Sorry for coming in late on this one.

- What is your favorite game on this system?
The Legend Of Zelda. I hadn't played a home system in about 4 years, and this game blew me away. I still love getting lost in it.

- What are some of your other favorites?
I like the SMB series, Zelda 2, Contra, Monopoly(!), Rollerball. Most of the older arcade ports are pretty good, especially Galaga.

- What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
I don't know about surprised, but The Legacy of the Wizard really pissed me off.

- Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
I think the first time I really saw it was when my sister got it for Christmas, in 1987 I think. I had ignored it up till then, but when I played SMB, I was hooked.

- Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yes, and I still have my sister's system, along with the accessories she had.

- How many games do you have for it?
Wow! 208. I haven't counted them in awhile!

- Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
I remember there was a mom and pop video store within walking distance of our house, and they had a ton of NES games to rent. I still remember watching my little sister play Friday the 13th and Bubble Bobble. Also, I remember a day soon after we got Zelda, Missy and I were taking turns playing it (she was always better at NES, and I was better at the 2600). It was a school night for her (I was in college, what a joke that was), and my dad got up at 2am for work and really lit into us because we were still playing!
I don't think they ever took the NES away from her like they took the 2600 away from me. Younger siblings always have it easier!
