Hey,

I'm working through making an (abridged) list of 1) rare and 2) expensive (not necessarily the same) Japanese and EU PS1 releases, and would appreciate some help from the import buyers and EU residents on the board.

EU Expensive Titles (those selling for > 25 L approx. in British pounds)
star ocean second story - 40
castlevania: sotn limited edition - 60
suikoden - 50
suikoden ii - 55
kula world - 50
legend of dragoon - 30
bubble bobble feat. rainbow islands - 30
tombi 2 - 25
tombi - 30
super pang collection - 30
rapid reload - 20 (scarce)
legend of legaia - 25 (scarce)

Rare EU games (clearly not exhaustive) that are cheap (# of copies for sale on ebay or in completed at ebay.co.uk):
Submarine Commander (v. rare - 1 on ebay)
China (v. rare- 1 on ebay)
Magical Drop (1 on ebay)
Baby Universe (0 on ebay)

As for JP (prices > 50 in $US):
Rakugaki Showtime 150
Harmful Park 100
Zanac X Zanac 60

Rare JP: ?

I'm really only looking for games that you would consider to be in the top 10 of rarity or top ten in price. As for JP, that list would be dominated by special/Millennium editions if they were included, so those should only be noted if the special edition is tremendously expensive or tremendously rare.

Thanks for your help!
Kev

X-COM Terror From The Deep PSX PAL is rare/expensive.

I don't know how rare it is, but a complete Japanese Valkyrie Profile Limited Edition easy pulls around $200. That's the most expensive Japanese PlayStation game that I can think of at the moment.

I wish you the best of luck with the lists. :) I would love for there to be a rarity guide for PlayStation imports as well-done as the one for US games, and this is a great start. I have about 30 myself, and there's tons more that I'm interested in. I have the feeling that most of mine are very common and not particularly valuable. :P

Sealed ones don't even pull that. Not in Japan anyway. $100 max for a complete one in Japan, probably add $50 to that in the US. Who knows w/ Ebay though.

Rakugaki Showtime
Ranma Battle Rennaisance
R-Type Delta (first print -- different cover)
Captain Commando

are all pretty rare. Top 10 rare? Not sure. I don't know the system that well.

Gaijin, what would those 4 sell for in Japan?

GaijinPunch

Yahoo Japan prices:

mint complete:

Rakugaki Showtime 6500 - 8000
Ranma Battle Rennaisance 4500 - 7000 (I think)
R-Type Delta (first print -- different cover) 2000-3000 (reprint came out, and made the value go down)
Captain Commando - 6000 - 7500

Take those w/ a grain of salt, but I think that's a good ballpark figure. Prices are in yen, not dollars, FYI. ;)

EDIT:
Here's some more:
Kaitou Apricot (http://page10.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/m6796361) (current bid at 6250 w/ 7 hours to go)

There's of course more promos and whatnot, and this is a system where a game that had hundreds of thousands of something sold (FFVII, FFVII International, Chrono Trigger) can catch over $100 (even $200) for a sealed copy.

Thanks man. I'll be passing through Tokyo, I think, in a couple months, so I may have to stop and pick some of these up. 6500-8000Y is like 60-75 US - that's half what the importers and ebay demand for Showtime.

Hehe -- you can always try Medialand and Trader2 in Akiahbara. They have a lot o these, but will charge a bit more... probably 25% unfortunately.

I was going to add an Akihabara section to Japanese Gaming, and even got the map almost done, but I've been waiting (and waiting, and waiting) for hosted support to get off their asses and give me my new FTP password after the attack. Not sure what's going on... until then, no updates.

There was a recent thread at Assembler [here] (http://www.assemblergames.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=2729) about rare PAL PS1 games. Might be of some help.

Mortal Kombat II (JP) is pretty tough to find and it is often expensive when you do.

I'm kinda surprised it's rare too. It's one of only a dozen or so PAL PSX titles I own.

These should be sweet money too:

Bubble Bobble also feat. Rainbow Islands
Devil Dice
Discworlds
Legend Of Dragoon
Pac-Man World
Raiden Project
Super Pang Collection
Vandal Hearts

The rarity of the recent games is anyone's guess but let me tell you that very soon there will be serious fighting for the first and the last games released. Some of the latest releases are very hard/impossible to find other than through special order, nobody's stocking them.
As for the early ones: 10 year lifespan+PS2 compatibility, dirt cheap games= a lot of damaged discs are just thrown away, huge installer base=lots of collectors.
Ok, maybe that was a bit over the top but that's pretty much what I will see happening.

How the fuck have I never heard of Super Pang Collection before?
Shit, I'm going to have to double the size of my PSX collection by tracking that one down :)

On Baby Universe: I honestly don't know if you'd consider it rare in the wild (as I'm in the US, of course). I do know that it's quite scarce on ebay.

Dreaming Eye: How could I forget MK2? Probably the most expensive non-SE PS1 game in the world.

Baby universe is scarce on eBay because it's so crap no-one will buy it! There are loads of games like that. I am surprised some people even try to sell Chu Chu rocket on there still!

If you want a complete list of rare and expensive PAL games then PM me. I will eMail you a list.

It's not really worth pricing them up though, as many games can fluctuate. Vib Ribbon for example is classed as rare (Sought after rare, not limited rare) and can sometimes be seen hitting £30 plus, othertimes it won't top a tenner.

There are only a few which are guaranteed to make big money everytime, and they are the obvious ones like Castlevania SOTN, Suikoden I & II, Tombi I & II, Star Ocean II, Kula World And so on...

PM me and I will sort you out. I'm also hot on PAL DreamCast games too if you are interested in a list for them. Actually, any console you want I can supply you with a list of rares / sought after games...

I've actually either bought, or almost bought all of these recently.. here's the prices I was looking at., in yen.

Panzer Bandits 5000ish
Harmful Park 5000+ (although I somehow got one for a friend for less than 3000 once)
Startling Odyssey Blue Evolution (not expensive, but pretty hard to find)
Toaplan Battle Shooting 2000-3000
Tenchi Wo Kurau 2 3000+
Langrisser 4, 5 (these are pricey, as are the other Langrissers on the game... 1 & 2 is a set if I'm not mistaken.)
Cleopetra Fortune - 5000 I think. Cheaper than the DC version.
Wonder 3 - can't say, but I think much cheaper than the Saturn version.
Umaihara Kawase - 2000 yen, although there's a 2nd edition which I couldn't find for a reasonable price.
Pulirula - same as Wonder 3.
Mighty Hits - not sure.
Ganbare Goemon 3 of them - 500 - 2000 depending on the game. Finding the first prints is kinda tough.

Really? I ended up the Second Edition just because it was more available to me.

More on the JP front -- I know these fetch a bit when sold outside Japan (and rarely come up for sale), but I don't know if they're actually "rare":

Gaia Seed
Chippoke Ralph no Daibouken (Adventure of Little Ralph)
Time Gal/Ninja Hayate (and another one of these double-pack LD games; I think these are actually cheaper/more common for the Saturn?)
Kyuin
Fuuun Gokuu Ninjin

I do try to be useful once in a while :). Have you played MK2 for PS1? Is it different in any way from the others?

Langrisser 1 ,2 are a set and it's much easier and cheaper to get. Most people don't care for the PSX L12 as the Saturn one has less loading and the extra scenarios and endings for L2. The PSX L12 also had rerelease later. Actually none of the Langrisser games are really that pricey anymore. You can get the Tribute on the Saturn for about half of what it use to go for. Most of the games you can get for about $10.00 to $15.00 except for maybe Dramatic Edition on the Saturn. I'm not sure what the Megadrive ones fetch anymore.

Some like Toaplan Shooting And Harmful Park generally fetch around $100.00 or so. I have no idea on Wonder 3 now. Both the Saturn and PSX use to fetch about $50.00 to $60.00 on average. I was more going on rarity and US prices and not Yahoo as not to many people here will use it.
