How can a game be game of the year when its only been out a few weeks (at the time of airing)?

I see alot of the same companies/games repeated EA, thq, etc. As well as very little Japanese games, lol, I'm surprised katamari and megaten:nocturne made the list. I watched a little bit of it last time, and was disappointed at the way it was all carried out. I'm betting they will follow the same format this time, so I'll pass on that and play some megaman X8 (hopefully its a vast improvement over X7).

This seems more like a big gigantic advertisement for the VG industry than an awards show. Why are GTA:SA, Halo 2, and Half Life 2 all nominated for game of the year. Half life 2 isnt even out yet, is it??? What a crock of shit.

Most likely to work a game developer untill they drop dead:
1) Electronic Arts
2) Electronic Arts
3) EA Sports
4) Those guys that made Madden

I found the previous one to be pretty lame. Madden wins now here a artist whose song just happens to be on madden playing live, wwe smackdown wins now here just happens to be some wrestlers to have a match, tony hawk wins and he and some other just happened to be there to skate. You could just have easily only watched the commercials and know who would win just by the list of performers

I just remembered something else that was pretty funny. Madden won game of the year on the awards yet tony hawk's underground was best sports game. You'd think that if madden was game of the year then of course it would also be the best sports game.

Oh boy, this crap again. :/
Gotta love the token Japanese nominations. Basically it's just MGS3 and a bunch of Tecmo nominations because Spike TV likes to show clips of girls with huge titties. And then there are a few odd nominations for Nintendo and Sega and such just because they pretty much had no other option (ie an EA game) to go with.

This seems more like a big gigantic advertisement for the industry than an awards show.
What do you think the Oscars and Grammys and Emmys are?
No way, man. They suck too, but often Oscars are given to obscure-ass movies. Shakespeare in Love, anyone? That beat out Saving Private Ryan!! And that crap happens all the time. You are right to a degree, but in my opinion, this video game shim sham is a much more flagrant example of a faux-awards show being used as advertisement.
Chris
EDIT: And they don;t nominate ovies that havent even come out yet!!! That's the kicker. They are using this show to hype games that are just barely coming out. Are you telling me that most of the candidates for game of the year really came out in the last month, if at all yet? We both know that the oscars, emmies, etc arent that bad about it. Shit, I'm really surprised that Gran Turismo 4 wasn't nominated for anything. I mean, it's coming out in like a month! Again, what a crock of shit!!

All I can say is: bleh. I caught clips of last years and I found it very irritating to watch. Made my eye twitch and my brain decided to vomit out my ears. Twice. Like others have stated, if they are going to do an awards show why are they taking games that just came out or are just coming out and putting them on the "vote" list? Hell, MG3: Snake Eater doesn't ship until tomorrow. Does anyone have any idea when the voting started?
No way Halo 2, Half Life 2 or even Snake Eater should be on that list, especially the "game of the year". Seeing it's on December 14th, it's a great way to heap more hype for game in time for the holidays.

I'm not about to argue in favor of the genuity of some of these other kinds of awards shows, but compared to them, these G4/SpikeTV VG awards shows are a complete farce.
And, I'm not surprised that alot of people here aren't going to be watching. Most of us tend to think about too many things that don't fall under the categories of "dope bitches" and "mad rimz" to be within their target audience. Though, their nominations for Katamari Damacy seem to illustrate that they're at least making an attempt, if only minor, to pull in some of the "hardcore" audience as a nice topping to their main focus. Despite that, I can't imagine this year's to be much more watchable than the last.

EA and Activision are the most and second-most profitable North American software publishers, so it's not a shock that their games would be the most nominated. People are buying, and loving, what they're selling.
While the show will probably suck, I don't see any nominees with which I disagree. Katamari Damacy receiving a Best Soundtrack nom indicates that actual gamers are consulting on the show this year, so that's something.
Why are games that just came out or are just coming out on the list of nominees? Because the game industry ships all its best stuff in the fourth quarter. That's no fault of Spike TV's.
Still, the only game awards that matter are the Game Developers Choice Awards, voted on by the developers themselves.

Just the fact that three games up for the year award have only been out for a month or so at the time of the making of the award show is plain bullshit. I do not plan to watch it that's for sure. I will wait for the EGM annual awards.
Bah.....this is all just a case of a tv channel trying to be "in the know" about shit. It reminds me of music awards shows where Heavy Metal Act Of The Year ia awarded to Blue Rodeo.
A year ago, my wife and I were watching the Dick Clark New Years Eve show. The one where they're live from Times Square. Well guess what? THEY decided to have a Game Of The Year segment too. This dork with a mike went around interviewing "gamers" as to what the GOTY should be. (it was already predetermined). The average person was under 18....the average response was an enthusiastic Vice City. Hmmm....aren't they too young for that game?
Anyways......the nominees were GTA 3....GTA Vice City.....and MADDEN!!! Interesting how TWO games from the same series were eligible for GOTY. Of course, Vice City "won".

So you'd replace two American RPGs with two Japanese RPGs. Why am I not surprised?
X-Men Legends was a big hit, and Activision is already working on a sequel. These awards are essentially a popularity contest--the public is voting, after all--and so Legends deserves its nomination.
The Bard's Tale has superb writing and voice acting. It doesn't have the gameplay depth of PB or SO, but I can understand why it would sway whoever was assembling the lists of nominees; it's more accessible and much more amusing to American gamers.
Now that I think of it, these awards are a good example of what I pointed out in another thread: American RPGs are much closer to the North American mainstream than Japanese RPGs.

There's no such thing as a "real" awards show. They're all a load of shit. I never understof why people get bent out of shape over things like this. Your favorite band didnd't win... so what? I doubt they'll stop making music. Some movie you hate win? You still don't have to watch it.
That said, I'd have to take them even less seriously if the newer games weren't included. All anyone has talked about all damn year (not here, but all the mainstream crap) were GTA:SA, Halo 2, MGS3, and Halflife 2. Not including those would be the equivalent of a music awrds show that didn't include all the poppy shit everyone sane seems to hate, but that always sells 8 bazillion copies to kids.
Regardless of anything else I find the Snoop/DOA commercial hilarious.

As I've mentioned before, the only video game awards that matter are the Game Developers Choice Awards, which are held in March, at the Game Developers Conference.
But it makes sense to air this silly show during the Xmas shopping season, when the general public gives a crap about games, and wants to know what to buy for themselves or as gifts.

After ten minutes of painfully watching the last "awards show" by Spike TV, I switched channels. Geez, that was not only a dumb disgrace, I couldn't believe the games nominated and which games actually won awards when I read it the next day. The show reminded me of Dolly Partons saying (whom I like): It is very expensive to look so cheap.
I agree, the Game Developers choice awards are BY FAR the best. I think last year Mark Cerny won the lifetime award, and the best game was Star Wars KOTOR, and Beyond Good and Evil, POP, Zelda WW were nominated for different categories. Awards shows should be beyond commercial success of games and beyond the short-sighted WOW and COOL factor.

The only reason to watch would be to see Snoop Dogg with the Doors.
But after listening to Snoop Dogg butcher Metallica's Sad But True, I don't know if I want to. He should stick to rap, he isn't a rock singer at all.
