View Full Version : Your First CD-ROM Game?

For many of us, I'm sure, the jump from cart and disc based games to those shining pieces of plastic known as Compact Discs in the early 90's must have been huge.
What was your first CD-ROM game?
I'd seen a couple, but the first one that I actualy bought and owned was Command and Conquer for the PC. I had just gotten a new system in the summer of 1994, with a CD Drive, and I was excited to get into the new realm of CD's. The first game I bought, full price, at my local GameStop, was this new game. I bought it sight unseen, but I was sure I'd like it since it was made by the same people as Dune 2, a personal favorite of mine.
Never regretted it for a moment. The game blew me away. Not only was the gameplay fun, but the cutscenes -- the like I had never seen before -- and the cool story, combined with the awsome musical soundtrack, sucked me into the game fully. It's still one of my favorite games, and I've faithfully bought (and mostly enjoyed) every game in the series since then. I'm still working on Red Alert 2 to this day.

When I got my Turbo-Grafx CD add on for Christmas of '91 I got Fighting Street and The Addams Family. What a horrible way to show off this new technology to everyone LOL Actually at the time I really liked the games, and I didn't really have any picked out, I just wanted the CD-rom and didn't expect to get any games except with my Christmas money from relatives after Christmas, so getting some games at all were really a treat after getting a $300 video game attachment.

my first game would either have been Papyrus' Nascar Racing or Doom 2 . those are my first 2 CD games.

First PC CD Rom game would probably have been Doom shareware. All of my friends got versions on 3.5 disks, but mine was on a cd.
My first console disk was Final Fantasy X. I got out of gaming after the SNES and only got back in when the PS2 was released. As such, I missed all the cd add-ons, Saturn, and PS1.

I had one of the earliest PCs w/ a CD drive - it came with a sampler including Luftwaffe, Secret of Monkey Island and Sherlock Holmes. Good stuff.

I was a poor, starving college student, so the crapopy 386 computer I had only had a disc drive - no CD. In fact, I had never ever SEEN a CD-based media in use, other than for music.
Then I got my first credit card in the mail. Went right out and bought a Sega CD for my well-played Genny system. That night, I saw Sewer Shark and Night Trap in action. X_x Seeing video-like graphics was simply awe-inspiring. Looking back, I realize how primative those two games are, but I still look at them with just a bit of awe.
When I first loaded up Sewer Shark and saw a live-action HoleHawg zip across the screen and then explode, I believe my exact words were a whispered "No farkin' WAY." @_@

Yup, I had that set too when I was in about 4th grade. Heh. Let's see if I can remember what it came with...
Loom
Secret of Monkey Island
Just Grandma and Me
Grolier's Encyclopedia
The Animals (San-Diego Zoo)
And of course the stuff you mentioned. That was my first CD-ROM stuff, and it was played with the included 1x drive. Oh the speed.

Console wise, my first CD-ROM was Shirlock Holmes: Consulting Detective, along with all the other pack-in games with the original Sega CD unit. I bought that system brand spankin' new with my tax refund check.
PC wise...that's a toughy. The first CD game *I* bought was probably Star Wars: Dark Forces. My wife (then girlfriend) was the first to get a multimedia upgrade kit (price was in the neighborhood of like $200 to $250) which came with a 2X CD-ROM, a better sound card, speakers and a bunch of CD-ROM titles (Mega Race, Mario is Missing, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing along with others I can't recall).

For the PC, DOOM II in 1995.
For consoles, a PSX in 1999.

The first CD-ROM game I ever played was Y's book I and II. I was simply blown away by it. I had a SNES with Final Fantasy II, but this was better. The game was really well made, and the music was phenomenal. The live soundtrack beat the wavetable synthesis on the SNES any day, and the cut scenes were just unreal. I was totally sold on CD technology that day, and I'd have to say that Y's book I and II has remained my favorite game of all time. It's partly nostalgia, and it's partly because it's a damn good game! :D
For the PC, the first CD-ROM games I got were all available on disc as well, so I didn't really see the big deal. Although, Pagan: Ultima VII (or VIII?) was really impressive. Was that available on discs?

PC wise, it was back when we got our old 486 Packard Bell (a Cadillac for us), and it came with BS games like MegaRace. So I think that would be my first.
Console wise, Parappa the Rapper on PSX.

The Journeymen Project Turbo on PC.Christmas of 1995..it was the first computer we had on since our Commodore 64 back in 1984...me and my brother played that game for the entire week trying to get out of different scenarios (Since it was mostly a time travel game)

I think I bought MEGA MAN 8, MEGA MAN X4, and MEGA MAN LEGENDS at around the same time for PS1 though I didn't own a PS1 system until 5 years later. LOL I tried it on my PC using "Bleem" which kinda sucked since the one I downloaded had a trojan with it. LOL Other than that, I did get FINAL FANTASY VII for PC and I was able to play that for real..
The 7th Guest
That along with Myst were the only reasons to own a CDROM drive way back then. ;)

I got my first PC christmas 1995, and it also included my first CD-ROM game - The Dig. I was blown away by the speech and videos, something I've never seen before, as I only had an A500 until then ^^ My English wasn't very good back then, but this game certainly helped me improve it. It was actually the US-import version with that pseudo-holographics bigbox. Very cool. I'd still like to see a movie done from this game :/

That's a very good question - I have no idea. Technically the first I OWNED was for the PlayStation, so I guess that answers that question - but I had played many more years earlier. What can I say? I was young and was lucky enough to have money for a new SNES or Genesis game - let alone the cash for a new bulky CD drive, so - yeah it wasn't until the mid 90's that I entered the CD realm. But I can't remember what the first CD game I ever played was - too much of a blur.

The 7th Guest. I think after that I nabbed something called a "5-foot 10-pack" that was a long strip of interconnected vinyl sleeves with a bunch of miscellaneous-type CD-ROMs in it. Stuff like clip art, encyclopedia and stuff. Most of all what I remember from that set was Doom: Knee Deep in the Dead.

The first game available on CD-ROM was The Manhole by Activision for the Mac. It was written by the team of brothers who later wrote Myst.

Whoops, I misread the question. That's what happens when I read the boards one minute before I have to leave the house.
I don't remember what my first CD-ROM game was. It was most likely something for the PC.

Wing Commander II for PC in 1993? 1994? I remember having the 3.5 disk version and to upgrade to CD I had to send in the first disk from the main game and each expansion pack, the manual cover and a check for like $35 and Origin sent me the DELUXE CD-ROM. Wooo-wee! I think I had to go through similar ritual to get the CD for Ultima VII.
I did that for a lot of Origin games, if I recall. The 3.5 disk version would come out first and then get converted to CD-ROM later on. Damn, I wish I'd saved the boxes. Lessee, Pagan Ultima VIII started out on 3.5 and had a speach pack to purchase seperately, then it had a CD direct to HD install CD then it had a play from CD, CD.
Back then one of the selling points of CD-ROMS was that "Hey, you don't have to take up all of your hard drive space anymore! Most of the Data stays on the CD!" This was when some people were calling the installaion size of "Strike Commander", at 35 megs, "immoral" (yes I heard someone say that).
Then when Wing Commander III came out, it required 50 megs on the HD. People on Origin's BBS were like "uh, aren't games supposed to start taking up less space?" This was when a 420 megabyte drive cost $200.
So, my first CDs were from Origin (R.I.P). Wing Commander I + II, Ultima 1-6 CD, Ultima Underworld + VI CD, Shadowcaster, Strike Commander, Ultima VII, Ultima VIII.
God damn I miss looking forward to Origin games.

I got a brand new Sega CD one Xmas, but traded it in towards a *gasp* $399.99 Creative Labs single speed internal PC CD drive! :) With it, I purchased...
Secret of Monkey Island on PC.

My first CD Rom game of any type was Daytona USA for the Sega Saturn. I remember looking at it in awe, waiting for the Saturn to become available. (In my area, several games came out some weeks before the system hit. I ended up waiting months because I had to save up for it.)
My friend had a Sega CD, so I had some limited experience in CD gaming, but CDs were still a novelty to me back then. I listened to cassettes exclusively until 1993! I remember drooling over Fighting Street in FAO Schwarz in NYC at Xmas time and Ys in the magazines. I still love that era of gaming the best. My personal golden age.

Unless you count Sewer Shark (since it came with the Sega CD system), the first CD game I bought was Lunar for the Sega CD. Second-best game on that system, in my opinion. (Lunar: Eternal Blue would go down as #1, though I don't have it anymore.)
I'm a bit strange in that I never really was bitten by the PC gaming bug, so it was a long time before I had a PC with a CD-ROM drive. Being an Amiga (500 and 3000) owner didn't exactly leave me predisposed to playing PC games either!

Gravity Games for the PC. It came with 400+ games on clearance at Ames for 4.99. Nevermind that 350 of the 400 games were variations of Mahjong...wtf? But it came with the classics like: chess, checkers, pinballs, cardgames, and the like. I still have it and occasionaly throw it in when i want to "take a journey through space and time". :)

For some odd reason I keep thinking either Williams Arcade Classics for the pc or Activision Anthology (or whatever the name was) for the pc. I know my Xwing and Tie Fighter games came on floppies and those games came out about the same time...

Nice thread!
Let's see.....
My first PC CD based game was the original Baldur's Gate, which I STILL haven't gotten around to playing!!!
My first CD based console game.......if you count which one of the stack of games that I bought that night legitimately touched my hand FIRST.....was Gran Turismo 2 for the PSX. That night I bought Gran Turismo 2, Ape Escape, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy 7, Ricky Carmichael Championship Motocross and I THINK Ridge Racer 4.
Even though the following are DVD based, just for fun.....first Dreamcast game was Soul Caliber. First PS2 game was Gran Turismo 3. First Cube game was Wave Racer Blue Storm. First Xbox game was Rallisport Challenge.

Back in 1995 I bought my first Window computer (With Win3.11 for Workgroups) and a couple of those cd game 10 packs. The first one I played out of them though was a no brainer. Space Quest 4, I had played the rest of the series at my cousins' house and loved it.

Spider-Man Cartoon Maker
...Those are the 2 I liked at least
Soon After:
Micropose Collection (Duke Nukem II - Side Scroller? was included, Commander Keen was in there, and a very old First Person Game I think was developed by id)
Battle Beast (Very crummy 7th Level Fighting game)
Sim Tower
Sim City Classic
Doom II
3D ultra Pinball: Fright Night (Turned me into a Pinball Wizard!)
Stellar 7
Space Quest V (I think, Roger Wilco game...)
Got those just following, so those were the first games I got that didn't come with my PC at least.
