My favorite is Gradius 3.

I've always been kind of partial to III myself, but I think that II had the best music. Never played IV or V.

Probably Gradius II. I can't pass the second level, but it's impressive. Gradius III is a bit more involved, but as Gapporin mentioned, the music in II is phenomenal, and the Graphics are among some of the best I've seen on the NES. It's really a shame that it never game out here. I guess it had some extra chips in it that other Famicom games lacked (?). If that's true, it really shows. The game just feels rock solid when you play it; moreso than Life Force. But damn, it's hard! :/

LIFE FORCE
It has an extra special place because its the only "one hit dead" space shooter i actually like.

Don't have V or Interstellar Assault yet, haven't played Gaiden or III (PS2) enough to get past the "OMG it's kicking my a$$" phase. Playing I on the Saturn Deluxe Pack is classic, but I never have time to sit down and really play II, IV or Life Force/Salamander (on the other Saturn Deluxe Pack).
So I'm going to have to go with Galaxies, which is the one that I can (almost) clear the loop on in a credit. Figures it would be a handheld.

Galaxies, III, I, II-USA (Life Force)....in that order. Never played IV or V.
I really like Galaxies because I am good at it. LOL

It's gotta be G3 for the SNES. It is the game that got me seriously involved into the series, and I've owned it for as long as I can remember. :)
G2 and G5 are also rather high on the list. Wish Gradius Gaiden could be too, but... well, I still need a boot disk fer me PSOne. :embarrassed:

Well I haven't played Gradius II, so my favorite is III. I still really want to play V also.

IMO 3 and 5 and the best in the series. Though the snes version of 3 was a little weak because of all the slowdown, I prefer the collection version on the ps2 to the snes one, or the super hard arcade version.

If Life Force counts, I am gonna have to vote for that. Otherwise, Gradius V is my favorite, because its a bit easier than the others, but looks just if not more impressive to play.
Gradius V, *easily*.

Well, I haven't really played 4 and 5 and onlu briefly played Galaxies. However, Lifeforce and 2 are my favorites.
2 for the Famicom is just so incredible. If you can just survive stage 1 w/o dying and manageing to snag every power up, you'l probably make it pretty far. The music and graphics are insane. You could probably tell someone it's an SNES game and they'd believe you. I think this game really pushed NES technology to its limits.

One of the really impressive things about 2 for me is the fact that it has combined horizontal and vertical scrolling simultaneously, instead of breaking the game into horizontal and vertical portions (like Life Force). Though I know it was totally doable on 8-bit machines, it's kind of a rare thing to see, especially in shooters from that time. I really can't think of another 8-bit shooter that had that. It adds a lot of depth to the game.

gradius II for turbo duo
gradius III for snes has aweful slowdown, and the whole game is almost carbon copy of gradius II anyways...at least all the fun stages.
i like what very little i've played of gaiden, and i could see that being my favorite if i were to pick it up. need to play V as well (more like need to buy a ps2). i like galaxies, and own it, but haven't put any time into it...the stages seem a bit bland for a gradius to me, but still a really fun game ;) gradius for nes will always hold a special place in my heart, and one of the few nes shmups i really like all that much...it's the only gradius out of the ones i've played that the moai heads REALLY give me a hard time.
i've only beaten gradius I for nes and gradius III for snes.
