Just curious. Anyone know?
I'd guess that it was Dragon's Lair of some variety, but I really have no idea.

I'm pretty sure it was Riven for PC. I remember a big stink being made about it back in 1998 or so.

A quick search on google revealed nothing. But I got my first DVD player in 1998 and I seem to remember Dragon's Lair already being available.

Tex Murphy: Overseer got a DVD release, but whether it was early enough to be the first, I'm not sure.
I get the feeling that the very first DVD "game" release might just be some shovelware compilation. :/

I'm stretching my memory here but I think Kessen in Japan was the first PS2 DVD ROM game.
Scene It? was the first board game.
I'm also finding references to Activision's "Spycraft: The Great Game" and "The Muppet Treasure Island" DVD-ROMs to be released to OEM in 1996...

The Riven DVD didn't ship till 1998...
The earliest game I remember being on DVD was the Tex Murphy game. I know Overseer was, but what about Pandora Directive?
A couple other early ones that I remember are Baldur's Gate and Riven.

I bought a DVD drive with my computer in 1998 cause I thought that would be the wave of the future.....boy, was I wrong. ;)
I can count on one hand the number of DVD games I have or plan to get:
Tex Murphey: Overseer
Baldurs Gate II
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Sims 2
Half Life 2

I remember someone at Ripcord mentioning Space Bunnies Must Die going to DVD during E3 97/98-ish (the buzz being it would be one of the first). Googling/searching several game databases, however, doesn't bring up any mention of a DVD release.
The answer may lie in when the DVD version of Riven came out (I know the original CD version was 97...but the DVD could have been a re-release way later...anyone have this date info?), Tex Murphy:Overseer, and if SBMD DVD really does exist (and if so...when did it officially hit shelves). 1998 seems to be our magic year for first DVD game releases right now.
Why do I have this bad feeling that the answer is going to be a bad remote control game that was packed with a super early DVD player in 1997? *shrug* The hunt is on. =)

Yeah, I believe that Dragon's Lair is the correct answer. And it's only fitting too, since it was also the first Laser Disc game in the arcades. Pretty neat.

Spycraft: the Great Game came out on 2 CD-ROMs.
I do think that you're right though -- the first DVD ROM "games" that I recall were all contained on DVDs that you bought. When you stuck the DVD into your DVD ROM drive, you got some funky mini-games to check out. I wouldn't doubt if a movie like Muppet Treasure Island was the first to contain games on it.
If you're looking for which game only was released on a DVD ROM, I really don't know.

I remember Baldurs Gate 1 saw a DVD release, but I am sure it wasn't the earliest.

I too thought it was Myst: Riven. I thought Dragon's Lair's big deal was on laserdisk. There isn't enough memory on that game to warrant a DVD release. I know for sure it wasn't a console game. There are enough Myst fansites out there that you would be able to find the exact release date of the DVD, which I thought was the same day as the (I think 4 disk) CD set.
