Dust.
Fine, dry particles of matter.
Small pieces of skin, cat, hair, bugs and other crap Im sure. :-P Yum.
How often you do guys dust your consoles and game box or anything thats lying around attracting dust?
Or maybe I should reword that.....What do you do to keep dust off your consoles, etc?
I try to dust them and the area once a week..ish...give or take a few days, sometimes it's every other day.
But the odd time I forget and when I do get around to it, it can be nasty!
I've been eyeing the dust covers made for Coleco and Atari(Im sure others too) but currently I use.....get ready for it......cling wrap.
Saran wrap to be more precise, but I throw a hunk over the consoles I don't use that often. When I use that console, I just either be careful when taking it off and use it again, or I just get a new one.
It looks like hell, but it helps.
And you..?

Paper towels on top of consoles helps. Any stored systems are in a box or at least wrapped in a plastic bag.

I am now taking a museum approach to displaying my systems. Museums only display a small portion of their stuff at a time. I have a 6 foot high and 5 foot wide entertainment system with a 26" TV and game systems in most of the resest of it. The rest of my collection is in a store room in Rubbermaid boxed or wraped in plastic. Also the systems on display and in use are all what I call seconds. They are second or thrid copies of systems I got cheap. Like the $2.00 N64.
After getting some of my systems covered with 20 years of dust and other crap (sometimes real mouse crap), and spending a lot of time cleaning them up I did not want to let them get so dirty again.
My Museum display now contains:
XBOX
PS2
Game Cube
Sega Master System
Sega Saturn
Sega Genisis
3D0
Sega Dreamcast
N64
Nuon (use as DVD Player mostly)
NES
SNES
Atari 7800 (mostly use for 2600 games)
A Sears Telegames Intelivision just arrived and will be on tempory display for a short while.
Oh, almost forgot the best thing about the museum approach. It is much neater and keeps the wife happy. :D

I'll dust my stuff about once a week also if it really needs it. I like to use Endust for Electronics. It helps with keeping the dust off electronic things.

Black collects too much dust. I usually dust my console units and the cd cases once a week. The games and system sin the plastic bins/drawers have no dust!

It's not the consoles you should really worry about. Its your controllers! Just think, hours and hours in your sweaty little hands... Take a look in the grooves and you will find years of dirt and crap which will need to be removed, and I bet your controllers all smell bad too!
I have to buy new ones every 6 months due to the fact they get so worn and minging.
You (Should) change your toothbrush regularly, so why not your controllers?
You should get a toothpick or something and try and get all that muck out of the grooves in your controller... You will be surprised!

Dust?
My consoles are tightly packed away in a entertainment center -- there's only a little space around them fot the air to circulate.
Maybe once a month. ;)

:duh:
Most of my systems are behind a glass door on my entertainment area, so no dust gets in and it still looks nice.

I was actually thinking about a air purifier.
If you set it right next to the entertainment center, maybe it would suck up most of the dust ?

I myself have been wondering about those Ionic Breeze units from Sharper Image ('course as a certified CHEAPASS I'd go to eBay for one), but I'm wondering if it would mess up the considerable amounts of data stored on magnetic media that I own.
Outside of that...dusting consoles is overrated. Puts scratches on it for no good reason. CD-ROM based systems? All I've got out now is my GC and PSX (original abbreviation, you know...not "THE" PSX) and they don't need dusting where they are. Wierd like that.

I like to use Pledge for Electronics. Does a really great job (without any residue) and seems to repel dust for a short while. I dust them off maybe once a month.

I dust on and off once a month, my area doesnt seem to collect must dust anyways. But i give my cart systems a brushing more often
Never really thought about it.
I know that the intake fans on the PS2 and Cube can really suck in the dust, as evidenced by the fan blades. Maybe I'll take a hand vac and suck some of the dust off. I'll regularly run a dvd cleaning disc with a wet brush on it through the PS2 and DC.....but I don't think that I've ever seen a product for cleaning the lazer on a Cube.
My cart systems get a dusting whenever they need it. Over 95% of my games are completes......all I dust are the top edges of the Genny cases. N64 isn't an issue. the system gets played enough and the collection grows rapidly enough (2 or 3 games a week) that the boxes are always being shuffled to make room for the next game (alphabetical order, kept in stacks 7 boxes tall). NES I don't worry too much about.
I use rubbing alcohol and Q-tips on a regular basis to clean carts that I aquire. I just cleaned two DC controllers that I'd bought. Man, were they gross.

Well Im glad to see Im not the only one who hates dust.
The controllers, yea....they get nasty. I try to wipe them off just with my fingers when I notice them or walk by them. A little habit I picked from my buddy.
I like the museum and each console in it's own drawer ideas.
I really need more room so that I can get a retail shelving display, a glass one.

Yeah, that's pretty much me too. Right now, there's a lot of dust on my Xbox. Looks like it's time to clean again.

Dust? No problem, haven't got any, all my consoles are behind some kind of door. If they would have, out would come vacuum cleaner with a brush nozzle.
I clean up my controllers frequently with a toothbrush, very handy.

I have opening doors infront of my consoles. So dust doesn't collect on them much. If I keep it open for a while though I collect dust and need to wipe it down. I just use plain paper towel. I use windex for my arcade cab glass and the glass on the doors.

I bouht a little Hamilton Beach air purifier from Target and it significantly reduced the amount of dust collecting on my TV screen and consoles. I don't even have it near them, either...maybe 7-10 feet away. I have it on the lowest setting, too.
