It's part of the dev system for Dreamcast developers. You hook it to the DC Dev system and use it to burn your beta copy to a disc.
The "Katana" was an early working title for the Dreamcast.

Whatever happened to that Yaroze-like DC dev system that Sega was supposedly working on? It was featured in one of the last issues of Next Gen before they bit the dust.

The GD-writer... I'll have to dig. As I recall it looks pretty much like an ordinary external CD-ROM drive.
I do have pics of the Dev System that you need to plug the writer into, however. Even a nifty diagram showing you exactly where it goes.

That's really neat! I wouldn't have the first clue how to get it to do anything, even a Hello World, but I'd love to have one of those to play with! With the GD-Writer, of course. :)

what did it do?
It's a development system. It's used to develop software for Dreamcast. This PC-like hardware would sit on designer's workstations as the conduit between them and the final product.

I challenge you to actually find any writable GD-ROMs tho!
These devkits are sometimes sold on ebay... I've seen a few on there.

Any idea as to what these normally go for?
