EDIT: Just secured a whole bunch of Resident Evil ones and Final Fantasy VII ones too! (Not a whole set of FF7 ones unfortunately, as someone else has nabbed "Sephiroth", "Jenova", and "RedXII" but got all other major characters names!)
EDIT: Just got a load more - Metal Gear Solid I & II names mainly, a few more consoles, and a load more Final Fantasy ones...

I don't know how much 600 pounds is, but since it's over a hundred, I know it's a lot. That's insane that they're paying that much money over a username, even if it is James Bond.

£600 is roughly $1,115
There are a lot of zero bidders on there though, so it'll be interesting to see if they do actually all sell. One thing is for sure, they'll have a lot of media coverage at some point during the next few days!!!
I've been franticly setting up loads of "Desirable" names ready to unleash at a later date, as have many people.
A few of my mates have also been doing it too, so between us, we have about 400 - 500 names reserved!!!

You've got to be kidding me...
$1000 for a frickin username?! What has the world come to where you choose a hotmail name over 2 months rent?
I hope noone buys it. If they are willing to fork up a grand for an internet name, I'd gladly take that money to give to charity. You could feed 500 children for that price.

Who actually uses hotmail anymore when there are several free alternatives that are so much better. I switched to Yahoo several years ago, and never looked back. Since I switched, hotmail has just got worse over time.

The money IS going to charity! Lol. It's going to the NSPCC.
Still, it's way over the odds for a username!!! Unless the guy's name really is Bond, James Bond, and then it probably is a worthwhile investment.

So how much are you trying to gouge people for, purely because you've sat and registered a bunch of names that you have no intention of using?

Here's a tip on seeing how much the UK money translates into US money. On the address of the auction, where it has .uk delete that part and type in com .
The address looks like this to start with: http://cgi..ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?
when you are finished it should look like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?
This is easier for me than going to a currancy converting site.

As much as I can! Lol :-P
<Laughs an evil genius laugh> Ha ha ha ha ha!
Methinks there are plenty of stupid eBay people out there with more money than sense!!!
(And believe me, it was very tedious doing all these!!!)
Besides, it's nice to know I have a full set of FF8 ones, FF9 ones, Resident Evil ones Etc... I am just a little gutted that certain ones I tried were already taken. Obvious ones like most band names, Disney characters, football club names...
And it's not like i'm the only person who had this idea... You watch - eBay will be flooded with these in the next few days as more and more people become aware of the new hotmail...

This is silly!
You could concoct a nice domain name and then create whatever username that you want. You might be able to get that for $10 a year if you look around. It's plain silly to pay for a dot co dot uk address which is just way too many dot everythings in my book.
Anyone need a gmail invite, drop me a note.

I would like to see official documentation on this charity. Neither you, or none of the auctions state exactly what the NPCC is. If it is indeed for charity, you should readily provide information rather than make people scrounge for it. Otherwise your credibility is severely challenged.
And besides:
You may not modify, copy, distribute, transmit, display, perform, reproduce, publish, license, create derivative works from, transfer, or sell any information, software, products or services obtained from the MSN Sites/Services

Check their about me page.
Also here: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/charity/
it is a legit charity.

The NSPCC is a famous charity which helps disadvantaged children.
Besides, it's only MSN's auctions proceeds which are going to charity, not mine!
As for that hotmail T&C - It doesn't include eMail usernames. If it did, then MSN are breaking their own rules.
But then technically you're not supposed to really be reselling things like computer games - And if you really want to be technical, you're not supposed to let anyone else ever play the one you have either (Ie, lending to your mates) - But we do...

I gotta defend this one, since selling Diablo II closed server items on eBay kept me going through some lean times in college.
If there's an idiot willing to pay, let them pay the money if it helps you (or a charity) to keep going.
Doesn't change the fact that people willing to pay that much are idiots though :)

Yep. Exactly. Anyway, what's so different from selling an eMail name to selling a domain name online? And it's not like these are any old eMail names which have been in use for years and are spammed up to high hell...
There are fans out there who have money, and will gladly pay stupid prices just to own a unique eMail address.
Ie, who wouldn't want "PlayStation2@hotmail.co.uk" or "MetalGearSolid@hotmail.co.uk" as their eMail address??? Fanboy's of this stuff will willingly pay for these!
Plus, it does all depend on who the provider is (In this case, it's Hotmail) - Obviously a hotmail addy is more desirable than a Lycos one...

11-21-2004, 10:29 AM
Is that all legal, selling free email addy's, since you don't run or pay for the servers and networks that provide the sevice.
I could appreciate if it was one account, (username) but there are tons of names up for auction! :/
Also you should be very careful, in the UK there is a big fine and possable jail time for using registered charity names and logo's to sell items or gain money.
Also the way you mentioned that someone else, nabbed some of the other Final Fantasy character names, sounds like your just cashin in for christmas??

Yes, it is perfectly legal.
and as I said, it's only MSN who are using the NSPCC to auction their's off - It is a partnership betwen the NSPCC and MSN. MSN actually pre-registered the names and donated them to the NSPCC.
And the reason there are loads up for auction is because intelligent people have obviously seen a niche in the market and jumped on the band wagon.
And i'm not cashing in for Xmas - I may not even sell the ones I have. It's nice to know I could though if I wanted to - If tehre was a demand for that sort of thing. Besides, I happen to like having a full set of FF8, FF9, and Resident Evil names!!! Just a pity I couldn't get a full set of FF7 ones and Metal Gear Solid ones... :(

WTF? Why doesn't anyone ever read anything properly?
The one's I am selling are not in any way linked to any charity.
The only ones which are, are the ones MSN are (Were) selling on eBay last week. They had 50 or so and all the money from the sale of those went to the NSPCC.
The clue is in the second paragraph of the post you actually quoted!!!
The sale of eMail account's is as legal as the sale of Domain names. And it's not even like these are used accounts which have been spammed up or anything - These are brand new and unactivated accounts.
If it were illegal, then MSN wouldn't have been allowed to auction them, and neither would the hundreds of other people selling them on eBay either. Just check out how much that James Bond one sold for!!!
For piece of mind, you can be sure that the money raised from the sale of the names I own will be used to fund my collection of sealed DreamCast games in the future! So in a sense, it is a good cause!

I don't know about anyone else, but I took that as you would be donating 100% of the proceeds to the NSPCC. But no, apparantly you're keeping every last red cent for your greedy little self.
Let me quote this again then:
You may not modify, copy, distribute, transmit, display, perform, reproduce, publish, license, create derivative works from, transfer, or sell any information, software, products or services obtained from the MSN Sites/Services
You are selling a Hotmail account. This is a service obtained from MSN Sites/Service. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that since you are selling these your your own personal gain, you don't have express written consent to sell these email accounts like the non profit charitable organization NSPCC does.
Just because someone else got away with it doesn't make it legal either -.-

I did  , thats why i asked, you kept mentioning NSPCC and from what i also read in the MSN terms, you can't go selling there "free" services for your own gain, and i hope you do really well in your collection of sealed games from your ill gotten gains :/ Merry christmas! dude!!

I would personally laugh my ass off if your X-Mass present this year was a big fat lawsuit from MS... Not that it would probably happen, but Im still laughing at the thought of it. LOL

Yeah, anyway... Totally ignoring the above (Because really, I doubt Microsoft really care) - I am just adding this back into the flow just in case anyone feels they are in the market for a new eMail addy...
I recently saw "NintendoGameCube@" sell for over £50, so it goes to show that there are indeed stupid people out there who have far too much cash to spend!

No, not yet, although I have had many people asking me to eMail them the list to browse! Quite a few people have shown an interest believe it or not!
No offers yet though. People have said how cool some of them are, but no one seems to want to discuss obtaining any...
I am still considering putting them on eBay now that the fuss has all died down...
I am just happy to get some feedback - A lot of people think they are great as novelty gaming memorabilia! Lol!
I'm not even sure I want to sell them to be honest.
