View Full Version : Good "trading card battle" games?

I've never played any of the real (physical) trading card games, but I really enjoyed the Pokémon Trading Card game for the GBC. I guess I liked the fact that the computer handles lots of the work for you, like enforcing the rules and keeping score, so you can just concentrate on playing and strategy. So I was wondering, are there any other similar games that are worth checking out? What's good in this genre and why?

You'd probably like RPGs, since they are basically card games, but with characters instead of cards.
I'd check out Magic: The Gathering and.... Yu-Gi... sorry, I just threw up a little in my mouth. :eek 2:

I've always prefered Final Fantasy 8's "card battle" sidequest over the actual storyline quest. I've spent hours playing that damn card game! It's fun, too!

Do you mean video game versions or the actual card games?

I don't know of any other card video games besides the ones already named, but both FFVIII and FFIX have good card battling games, and I hear the one in FFXI is nice as well.

As for the actual games I'd recommend Battletech and Marvel/DC's Vs. TCG. There is also a "gansta" TCG called Players & Haters, I've never played it, but the cards are funny as hell.

Video game versions. Specifically I've been looking at PSO 3, Culdcept, and Baten Kaitos (which I realize is more like a traditional RPG, but with a battle system like a card game). I'd consider the Yu-Gi-Oh games, but the scores they have been getting are not encouraging.

I've played the card battle game in FFIX, but I'm looking for a game that is mainly focused on the card game aspect.

Thanks for the responses so far everyone.

There's also:

- The aforementioned Magic: The Gathering Battlemage game for the PlayStation (although it's more of an action game)
- Yu-Gi-Oh for various systems of course
- Monster Rancher Battlecard for the Gameboy and PlayStation
- Digimon Digital Card Battle for the PlayStation

I want to say there was a Card Captor Sakura game for the Gameboy but I'm not sure.

There was a Card Captor Sakura game for GBC, and I believe it was Japanese only.

A game I'd DEFINITELY recommend, would be SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters Clash for the NeoGeo Pocket Color. It's a GREAT game, especially if you liked the Pokemon Trading Card Game.

PSO Episode III is pretty fun. It plays more like a strategy game than a card game, though.

This is the only card game I own and I never thought I would like a game like this much the same way you found out. This game is allot of fun. Maybe I should try the Pokemon one now.

Yeah, definitely SNK Vs. Capcom: Card Fighter's Clash. It's worth owning a Neo Geo Pocket Color for this game. A top 10 game for me, possibly top 5.

Monster Rancher Battle Card GB and PSOne (Look in my auction link for a low price on the GBC version)

SNK Vs Capcom Card fighters 1 &2 is well worth the price of a Neo Pocket Color. The 2nd one is only available as an import, only japanese text, and tough to find, but still worth playing.

MTG: battlemage sucked, for got the MTG PC game, duel of the planeswalkers, and its 2 expansions, just like playing the real card game, except these are quite a bit out dated :(

There's also Toshinden Cardquest for PSX, Japanese. Didn't play it much but it seems like a board game race with card battles and collecting.
