I hate my life and all that embodies it. When I tell my wife not to buy a DS because I can wait until January (when New Super Mario Bros. is released) she is supposed to automatically assume that it would be a nice and wonderful surprise for me to have gotten it today! (Today is the 21'st, release day!)

Somebody let me know how much they like it and describe the sheer joy of tapping your stylus against that thick screen while voice chatting on a Wi Fi network and sending files to people. Oh YES! Please tell me how beautiful the dual screen idea i implemented in the release game that you bought. Make my little wee wacker throb in envious delight as I read your words describing the wonderful voice activated options. GRRRRRRRRR!!!! JUST TELL ME HOW GOOD THE GAMES ARE!

I second your opinion. Im eager to buy a DS, but I will go to the US until december 20th....so IŽll have to wait a month to get it, even though I have the money burning a hole in my pocket :S

G4TechTV is having a DS day today it seems...everything I see is shown through a DS onscreen...wierd...right now they're showing Cinematech which I guess are some of the actual games so check that out. You may get an idea from it on how good the games are. I find it odd they're releasing the system on the weekend, though. O_O

I just got one....but I haven't opened it yet. The only game the store I went to had was Super Mario 64 x 4. Unfortunately, they didn't have the SKU in their system yet. Course...I hadn't planned to buy it anyway...I wanted to get Feel the Magic XX/XY and Mr. Driller, but no one had either game in stock locally. So I figure I'll leave it sealed and if I can get the games I want I'll open it.

Course, I'm also waiting to see if there's a pre-Xmas shortage of units...the store I got mine at only got TWO, and my local Wal-Mart only got 10. I suspect they're gonna be harder than people anticipate to find this season. If the price jumps, I'll be ready :P

Well, in fact, the DS itself is being highly allocated by Nintendo of Canada, and I can only assume that it's the same case where Nintendo of America is concerned.

Is it more expensive in Canada than in the US, Lady Jaye?

Driller won't be out until the 30th, and supposedly it will only have an initial print run of 2500... luckily I Preordered mine a while ago, but just a heads up.

Also, I won't be getting my DS with Mario 64 until tomorrow, as my ovenright shipping from EBGames didn't work out as well as hoped. Oh well, what can I do... I've got a copy of Feel the Magic that I've had since Wednesday night, heh.

Didn't Wal-Mart break the street date for the DS, like with Halo 2?

Well, the Gamerush I pre-ordered my DS from isn't getting them in until Monday. I'm not surprised with this store but I can't believe they actually managed to get Halo 2 in on time for their release party. I thought they'd screw that up for sure too.

Where'd you hear that Driller is only getting an initial run of 2,500?

I started playing through it and IT IS AWESOME :D

God, it's good to be back online again! I moved house and had to wait over a week for my cable company to install my nice new 1Mbit connection! Just in time to be a part of the DS zeitgeist - even if I am in a country that won't see an official release for another 4 months!

Anyway, I preordered mine from Lik-Sang and payed for it earlier along with a copy of Mario 64x4. So it's just a case of wait and see for me at the minute. I am really choking for a blast of this thing! I'm looking forward to hearing everybody's opinions!

Do you mean it's been over-allocated? More preorders than units? Cause that's what seems to be happening everywhere. I'm thinking that if enough places run out, a false shortage will happen for the holiday season. There'll be enough come January I'd expect.

As for not opening it...well, it's easy when the only game you have is the demo it comes with. I'm patient. If I had Feel the Magic...would be MUCH harder! :D Regardless, I'm hoping for a shortage to drive the prices crazy :D

The store I work at had 13 extra DS units, although I didn't see how many were preordered. When we opened up about 5 people went straight for the units.

I played the Metroid demo last night. Not bad at all! I would probably be getting one if my money wasn't so tight and a had such a huge backlog. (hmmm... time to get rid of something...)

I had to cancel my pre-order of this due to me being out of work. :( I know when I did the manager at my local EB said they allready had their first batch (todays) totally sold out and were working on the second batch. I would have gotten one today if I had kept the pre-order.

That's fine, after a couple months more games will be out for it anyway.

I got my DS with Super Mario 64 DS and Feel the Magic. As the people at McDonalds say, I'm loving it. Unfortunately, after 2 hours, my arms started to hurt, so I stopped. But what a great two hours those were. I love how Metroid plays. It's really cool. And it's no where near as hard to control as I thought it would be. Super Mario is pretty good. The controls seemed akward, but I guess it's just me. Feel the Magic was very fun. I'll play more in a minute.

The only complaint I have, is that I think the systems a bit big. but other than that, it's great.

Well everyone around here is sold out. I got so fustrated, I thought they come out tommorow. The last place I searched (a gamestop) had 10 extras. Since the guy knew me he held onto one, and when my dad got there I had the only one left. So my dad is on his way home now with a DS, Super mario ds, and feel the magic. I'll give first impressions later.

Okay, someone wanna tell me where the hell Luigi's being held captive? Or the key at least? I just beat the second Bowser, before I went in it asked me if I did a few things. Everything except freeing Luigi. WHERE THE HECK IS THE KEY FOR HIS DOOR?

I'm tempted to go to GS now and get Feel the Magic, but I think I'll wait until tomorrow.

I scored a DS this morning! I arrived at ToysRus at 9:30am and was third in line (out of 8 to 10 buyers) to buy 1 of 30 available DS systems as they opened at 11:00 this morning. This is a birthday gift for my oldest daughter who turns 17 next month but I also plan to outfit myself with a DS first thing in 2005.

I played around with it a little bit and I really like it! SP games looks so crisp on that upper screen! The included stylus is kinda wimpy but I suppose it will do the trick.

I checked one out yesterday at an EB before they were released. I didn't think it would impress me too much because it only had the Metriod Prime demo.

Sadly, now I want one really badly. That was really cool. I must and will hold out until I have more games that I want... But it won't be easy...

If I didn't have to visit family this morning, I can just about guarantee I would've been one of those people in line this morning. Now that I've made it past "launch morning" I'll be okay...

I think ;)

I'm going to wait and see what you all have to say about it before I buy one. One thing that I DON'T want is "just another 32-bit GBA with an extra screen at the bottom". If that's all it is, it would be a waste of money for me.

No. You aren't the only one. I am waiting for the new Super Mario Bros. game to be released....even though I wouldn't mind having one earlier. By the way, the commercials and the website is a little disturbing in this age of adolescent caressing priest...

Got mine as an impluse buy (reconsidered the PSP), and I like it so far. It doesn't impress me as much as I thought it initially would.

Got mine @ Toys 'r' Us (With a free gift card!), and bought mario 64DS at kmart, but took it back 1/2 hour later when I found feel the magic at best buy.

Feel the magic is pretty cool. The look of it reminds me of those iPod commercials, and the play reminds me of a PDA Wario ware game that makes use of the microphone and the touch screen.

I was really hoping Sprung and Wario ware would be available at launch too, but alas, nope.

This looks like a great system - it even has a headphone jack! I'm looking forward to the new releases in the coming months.

I got mine at Walmart they had like ten of them. I'm really enjoying it.

I've played the Metroid demo and like using the stylus vs the thumb thingee (I'm a leftie).

I've been playing Feel the magic XX/XY. I like it a lot. It's a good demonstration of different types of games you can do on the DS.

Haven't tried Super Mario 64 DS yet...

So far I give it a B+...

No, it's not just you. Super Mario 64 was designed for an analog stick, not a D-pad. Every third-person 3D game for the DS is going to suffer from the same awkwardness.

Is anyone else's upper screen crooked? On the unit I picked up today, the upper-left corner is very slightly higher than the upper-right corner. It's just enough out of alignment to be noticeable.

Nintendo wanted to get the DS out there before the PSP--Nintendo first to market with new hardware? Everything I know is wrong!--so you're wise to wait 'til next year, when the games catch up.

I got mine at Babbage's today at around 11:10. There was 6 people in front of me in line. ALL FOR THE DS.

I have been busy ALL DAY running errands and such and have just got home. It's charging now and so won't be able to play Mario64 until another couple of hours.
I did turn it on though to set up every thing. (Name, time, date, etc.)

It's so damn pretty. I just love it!! Can't wait to try mario64 now though. The Metroid Prime DEMO is awesome though. I am not into handhelds that much, and FINALLY found one I love. I have been wanting a more powerful handheld since I bought my GBC on release day, back in '98 i think.

My DS is charging now so I'll be finishing up FireRed whens its done. Great unit, tons of cool stuff and wicked metroid demo and gba games play&look amazing on it - Go get a DS while you can.

Damn, harsh.

Well if Nintendo at least had online play and a wider range of adult type games (neither of this I care about, but of course alot do) that could EASILY be #2 and maybe #1 again.

But there not doing this. And the difference between Atari and SEGA is that they couldn't do ANYTHING at all to stop their demise. Nintendo CAN! It just seems like they don't want to right now, for some damn reason.
And Nintendo is just a better company than the other 2. SALES PROVE THIS. Nintendo has 6 of the top 10 selling games of ALL TIME, just to mention one thing. (I don't want any flames, I LOVE atari and espcially sega, but nintendo is better. What I mean by that is saleswise.)

I definately see the point you are trying to make. But don't agree with you when you say nintendo can't stick with it anymore. For them to go out of the business now would be crazy.
When Sega and Atari went out of business weren't they completley broke and had to file liek chapter 9 or something.

Nintendo is NO WHERE NEAR THAT. Not in the same universe as that even.
I also don't think people realize that just because Nintendo is in third place in sales, that they are going broke. The only thing that is going on is that there just not making as much money as they used to. That's all.

NO, NO, NO. Just because they don't do as good in hardware sales as they used too, doesn't mean they have to stop.

Nintendo has also stated before that if they go out of the hardware sales they will go out of the business completely. (I was thinking, just think how much game companies would pay for the rights to say - Mario, Zelda, Samus, DK)

I actually do believe that Nintendo would completely fold the business instead of selling out. Look how hard headed they have been already. And by the way, not have Online capabilities hasn't really hurt Nintendo. The market is pretty small and doesn't bring in much profit at all.

That is true, although I think as time goes on Nintendo will have to make the jump into online gaming in order to compete with M$ and Sony. Broadband isn't in every household yet, but give it a few years and I bet the number of people who want to go online to play games will be pretty high. :)

Oh and the DS is AWESOME, by the way. I bought Feel the Magic and Mario 64 and haven't even played Mario yet...I'm too hooked on FTM. :D

Is anyone else's upper screen crooked? On the unit I picked up today, the upper-left corner is very slightly higher than the upper-right corner. It's just enough out of alignment to be noticeable.

-- Z.

YES! Mine is slightly crooked too! It's not noticeable when I play DS games, but it was obvious when I played a GBA game on the top screen. Better than having broken pixels though...

I said it after Sony announced thier handheld that Nintendo HAD to pull this off right or die. They needed to dump the console market after the GC and put EVERYTHING iinto the handheld market.

They didn't.

Atari, Sega... Meet your new friend Nintendo.

Raedon,
Why are you so vehement against the DS? It's not like you need to warn us that a tidal wave is going to destroy humanity. It's just a videogame player. Go have a beer or something. :) (and for the record I have 3 2600s)...

But I will say this. the DS is kind of a Green Eggs and Ham type of experience, you need to try it. It's a new thing, so it's harder to sell, than say "All your favorite PS2 games in the palm of your hand!" The two games I got, Mario and Feel the Magic. are quite good. I did get one dead pixel though and am trying to decide if I want to take it back, and swap for a new unit...

Did I buy Beta or VHS? I dunno. The last time I really enjoyed a system, it was the Dreamcast  And yes Nintendo needs to hustle AND change if they want to remain relevant in the next console race. Being profitable doesn't matter if you don't have any market share. I think the gamecube suffers from two things:

1) Not enough games for adult gamers. And regardless of their quality, too many "Mario (insert activity here)" games...

2) Their two flagship titles weren't as good as their N64 counterparts. Mario Sunshine is fun, but not in the same class as Mario 64. and I loved Windwaker, but it was too easy and needed at least two more dungeons.

However, I think the GBA SP is a great system. Too many mario rereleases (I already have Super Mario All-Stars thanks), but some nice new updates (Castlevania and Metroid) as well as original titles like Warioware...

But let's leave the pundits and the sweeping speculations and the I told you sos alone. Or at least not confuse predictions and facts.

Who's to say Nintendo would "sell out" if it decided to abandon the Hardware Wars? More likely, it would follow Sega's lead and become a "hardware-agnostic" third-party publisher. But that decision, should Nintendo have to make it, is years away, and would require both Nintendo's GC follow-up and the DS to totally tank.

I agree that the lack of online play hasn't really hurt Nintendo. Sony quite reluctantly supported online for this generation of hardware. Xbox Live has only managed to get a very modest percentage of Xbox owners. Sony has sold more EyeToys than Microsoft has sold Live subscriptions.

Nintendo has also stated before that if they go out of the hardware sales they will go out of the business completely.

And if you believe that, I've got a nice bridge you might be interested in buying...

LOL

Well, ok, No I don't believe that they are going to do that. I just stated that is what Nintendo has said. BUT, even if I did COMPELTELY believe that, I would love it if I was wrong. Of course I still want Nintendo to make games.
They would make a killing at it. Hopefully they would team up with Microsoft if that did have to happen.

Yes, it has been proved that it doesn't bring in that much profit, yet. BUT, IT DOES sell games and systems, some games and systems, so when you look at it from that standpoint it does.

And your right about believing that nintendo would just fold. I don't think it would happen, but if it did I wouldn't be surprised. I mean just look at the way they do some things now, certain things they will NOT budge on doing.

I don't wanna be a DS-enthusiasm spolier; but what about gameplay? The hyped 'new'-factor will soon be over, the proof is in the games.

The crucual issue for the success of the DS will be the innovative use of the SECOND screen. Do you get new gameplay experiences out of the second screen? How fare the games you played so far cinsidered this crucial selling point?

I'm asking because if there is not a great use of the second screen, it will be regarded as an unnecessary appendix, and the DS will loose the fight against the PSP for sure. From what I read so far in mags about detailed descriptions of the lined-up games, I can't see a good use of the second screen. Maps, maps, and more maps and stylus shooting in Metroid Prime; overwhelmingly, the second screen does not a lot what a push of the Start button can do also.

So, Feel the Magic seems to be the game to go for. I was a little interested in it but not enough to preorder a copy with my DS but now you lot have really got me thinking! Is it really that good, then?

I'm not, in fact I can't wait to get my hands on one later when I find one used. I just dislike the fanboy attitude toward the DS by people here. The system is flawed and it will be the end of the Nintendo console making.. "maybe" one more home console but all the signs point to a company that is smart enough to know how to get out without going into the red.

It bothers me when people don't have foresight for some reason. little things like that make the world seem darker to me so that is where the "doom" is I guess.

Fair enough man :) Let's just say I'm a glass half full kind of guy...

The only bad thing about the DS is that it's can't play Game Boy Games,Game Boy Color Games,The Game Boy Camera,The E-Reader and The E-Reader +(Wich is only in Japan) Plus no link-up Cap. ,But the good thing is that Nintendo is macing a adapder so you can play wat I just told you that can not by play'd on the DS and a adapder that you can uese'd link-up Cap. fore Game Boy Games.

Where did you read Nintendo was making an adapter for the DS to play older games? I just don't see it. There's no reason to. Unless the GBA2 failed and the DS became the new Game Boy, there would be no reason for N to make such a thing. Besides, who still uses the Game Boy Camera (When there are perfectly good third party versions for the GBA out there and someone most likely will create one for the DS soon enough) or even the eReader (Except for the occasional SMB3 attack.) What with all the eReader NES games coming to GBA carts anyway, there's no reason to support another failed device. That would be like them creating a Virtual Boy adapter for the DS.

I'd still like my e-reader to be good for something, it's slipping out from under the unlevel coffee table.

Indeed. That is some great foresight LOL
