View Full Version : Okay, So Who's NOT Getting a DS Today/in the Near Future?

It's the 21st the DS is out, and people everywhere on the net (this site included) are screaming about it. My question is who is waiting to get it, or not getting it at all and why?

I for one plan on getting one, but not for at least six months. The three games that mainly interest me so far are the new Yoshi, Animal Crossing and Metroid and they all have a long way to go. Right now I can't justify (or afford) spending $150 to play N64 remakes and sports games, even if I can play them online anywhere.

Probably never.

Sonys systems have always been more apealing to me than Nintendos, and Psp looks incredible.

The rare occasions when I have time/opportunity to play a game on a portable system, I almost exclusively play Tetris on my GB Pocket, or lately, on my new GBA (not SP).

The new DS, as cool as it looks, won't improve Tetris, and would be more delicate than the GB Pocket.

I already have an NGPC, and as I'd rather keep it in good shape, I still play Tetris on the GBP more than anything on the NGPC.

The GBP I tend to throw in my coat pocket, throw in my briefcase, throw in plastic bags with my lunch, etc... It's a hardy sucker, and tolerates all sorts of abuse.

For sophisticated gaming, I rely on my Dreamcasts.

Yeah. I've played with one and it didn't excite me at all. I'd rather drop $150 on an arcade game than another portable I won't use. Someday, though, I'll probably get a used one on the cheap. Just for the heck of it.

I'll probably get it once I see 6-10 games out that I'll actually play.

I'll be waiting for a few months, there's no rush really to get it, but playing Animal Crossing on the go seems like a great idea. And since I don't have a N64, I'll certainly pick up Mario 64 DS, the new Metroid game and Final Fantasy III, whenever that's bound to come out.

Only thing: the DS is larger than the SP, which means that I'll have to get a bigger purse to carry it around.

If there were even one game out for it I wanted to play, I'd buy it today. But, there's not - and none coming - that I want to play. I'd just use it to play GBA games for the next 6 months.

I find it sad that their killer app thus far is a demo.

It's almost worth it to buy it to feel that "Nintendo" rush of a new system & new Mario game (NES, SNES, N64) on launch day.

Almost.

I probably shouldn't have but I just bought one :)

Feel the Magic XX/XY is pretty fun, and a good use of many of the special features including the microphone. Haven't tried Super Mario 64 DS yet...

GBA games look great on it too (tried Wario Ware)...

Cheers,
Ben

Yep. Right now, the only thing that I'd even think about playing is Mario 64. I need more "killer apps" before I buy a new portable.

Me. None of the games interest me yet, and I wasn't particularly impressed whn I played the demo unit at ebgames. I am still in love with my SP, so I see no need to upgrade right now, anyway.

I'd consider it if I saw some really innovative uses of that dual-screen technology. Having read the reviews and checked out the demo, I don't see the innovation. Wow, a great big map. Or the "touch the screen to shoot" control-style that is markedly inferior to the alternatives (and yes, I played the Metroid demo with both). I've never been impressed with Nintendo's policy of rehashing near-exact ports of previous-generation games (Mario 64). At least the PSP has current-generation ports in the pipeline (GT4). If the developers don't come up with some innovative ways to make use of that 2nd screen, we're gonna be stuck with graphically inferior versions of what's on the PSP.

I think it looks really cool and I'll probably get one in six months or so. I'm not traveling that much right now and I wouldn't have anytime for it at home. But from what I've seen it looks far cooler than I thought it would be so i'll get one eventually.

I've probably bought my last hand held gaming system for a long time. My lifestyle just doesn't accomadate a lot of "on the go" gaming. In Oklahoma there is no mass transit. If you want to go somewhere, you drive. When I do end up travelling, I have to take my laptop from work with me, which is loaded with various games and ROMs. Likewise, I've got a GP32 stuck in my laptop bag for a backup.

Some of Mario 64 DS's touch-screen mini-games are entertaining, but none of them have a control system you could flesh out into the central gameplay mechanic of a "real" game. Shallow and gimmicky, all of 'em. Then again, this is the portable market, so shallow isn't a bad thing.

I'm thinkin about picking one up in a couple of months. Need some money first. I'm just not into handhelds that much but the DS sounds like much fun. I had one reserved at GameCrazy but spent my cash on other stuff. Oh well. I'll what games start coming out out for it. Animal Crossing does sound like a lot of fun though. :)

DS THREADS SHOULD BE COMBINED THERE ARE TOO MANY!

Maybe 2 threads
-Praise, gameplay whatever, come play online with me = good stuff
-not buying one, unsatisfied with launch or Mktg campaign

I am not getting one. I seem to be losing interest in games, as a whole, except for my NES stuff. I never play my Gameboy Advance anymore, so I don't really see the point of paying that kind of money for a DS which I may or may not use, when I could put the money towards a guitar or hardware for my keyboard or something.

I wont be getting one until I find it for less then 25 bucks, or unless its in the near future for like 50.

I tried it and its pretty fun. I even tried the multiplayer. At this point I was thinking of getting one with my employee discount, but its a tradeoff between that or waiting for the price to drop or new colors to come out (not to mention games). Unfortunately my employee discount may "expire" by then. It seems that some stores still have quite a few available, though I doubt that will last long. The store I worked at doesnt seem to have any (supposedly never got them).

Also, I just bought a TV, so I spent enought money for today.

As much as I like Nintendo I just dont understand what the hell they are doing anymore and even though the DS looks great to me nobody and I mean NONE of the ppl or gamers in my area even know what a DS is and I live in the middle of North America O_O there have been absolutely NO TV ads in my area and the only ones that I have seen are in the Vid game mags
You know that Sony will put a BIG push behind the PSP before and during its release so what in the name of SEGA is Nintendo doing?
I know that the majority of gamers here on this board have seen this pattern before: lack of third party support for a companies home console and failing to support their new handhelds with the right amount of advertising and letting the public know that there actually is a NEW SYSTEM out there like the DS
Nintendos got to get it together or all of us gamers will be living in a world filled with nothing but PS3s and XBOX2s O_O

Never. Screw Nintendo portables since the Black and White one. I buy the Game Boy Color because they stopped selling Neo Geo portables. Lo and behold, they stop developing for it. I buy the Game Boy Advance. 2 days later, I hear about them hawking the DS. If I buy the DS, it'll be dead by Christmas.

Sorry Nintendo. The likelyhood of me buying a system of yours in the future is slim.

I appreciate you looking out for us, but don't you like having the system's full backlog available? Apparently you need to have that "new" feeling...bah, overrated.

I'll get a DS eventually, but I try to play and beat one or two games at a time, and I've got enough PS2/GBA games to keep me busy for a while. It just doesn't awe me to the point where I must get one now. I'm definitely interested in the New Mario Bros though, one of the titles which will make me definitely buy it eventually. It's awesome that it's a way to play GBA games on a backlit screen (as opposed to the front lit SP), but nothing beats the SP's size! It fits perfectly in my pockets!

I've offically given up on Nintendo. I just don't care because they just dont care.

I won't buy a DS because I dont have the money or the time to invest in one. Same thing goes for the PSP. I've used many a Sony product in the past and have never been let down...but i'm still not going to buy one.

I'll get one eventually, but with Christmas right around the corner, I can't justify dropping $150 + $100+ for games when I have gifts to buy. Maybe around February or March.

I'll wait for more games and for Nintendoi to address quality control issues such as the dead pixel issue. That being said, I'll probably wait around 6 months. I never buy a console at release. The only one I came close to was for the PS2.

I am putting my money towards a PSP, so I won't be getting a DS... rather spend the rest of cash on games for it.

Probably the GBA2 in the future will look more interesting than the DS.

I'll pick it up asap once castlevania is released for it. Unless of course if the game is crappy, which means no ds for me (unless they release a nights game for it). I'm much more interested in the psp, in fact I have already preordered, because I know sony likes to under release systems. The games for the psp appeal to me more (tokyo xtreme racer, mga, and devil may cry), also the extra features are better than the ds's in my opinion (movie/picture viewer and mp3 support, as well as possible retro emulation (Yes!!!)). Not to mention that the psp looks extremely sleek.
