View Full Version : Did Nintendo screw up the Nintendo DS boxes too?

I think GBA and Gamecube game cases are laughable. Too big, and the Gameboy Advance logo looked "cool" about 10 years ago. This time, they've stuck with the same design as their Japanese counterpart... but are they as big as a house?

So you don't like XBOX or PS2 cases either, since they are the same as GC.

I personally love the DS cases. I think the size and case itself are very cool!

I love the DS game cases, too. They even have a GBA-cart storage slot above the DS-cart storage slot. Very nice.

Are we walking about American or Japanese GBA and GCN boxes? The Japanese ones are tons nicer that the American ones... with DS boxes, well, I personally like that they're dvd-case thickness but I dislike that they're like 2/3 the size of a DVD case. This makes it hard to find a shelving unit.

I think that the boxes for games should be as small as possible. But I'm also one of the crowd that ALWAYS prefers the Japanese box art. I think that it's a GREAT move for Nintendo to move away from the cardboard boxes and finally create something with some longevity.

The DS boxes could be smaller, and the box art is cooler in Japan. But, they did a decent job this time around.

There's something about the brand positioning of Mario in Japan that is very different from the way that he is presented here. I can't quite put my finger on it though.

I'll just look at the two box arts for Mario 64 DS. In the US it's a big blast in your face. all the characters smiling and just Boom! In your Face Flanders - type of deal. The Japanese box art is more of a glimpse of a passing moment, Mario catches you spying on them, but otherwise, it's totally got that hint of impermanence (big time Buddhism overtone). I like the japanese one better.

I dont think nintendo fucked up the box arts.

I like the DS boxes. I was tickled when I saw there's a slot in there to hold a GBA cart too. Not too big at all.

Thanks... seems they did a good time around. I'm not particularly big on Xbox and PS2 using DVD casing, but I'm even less a fan of Nintendo doing it with Gamecube games --- seems to defeat the purpose of having the small disc.

And yes, I agree -- I think the JPN Mario DS cover is excellent, whereas the US one is not bad, but not special.

Are the boxes like plastic, like the n-gage boxes?

Yeah, they're plastic. I've never seen a N-Gage case before though, sorry!

So what would you prefer for XBox and PS2 games? CD Jewel cases like the Dreamcast? If so, me too. I don't see why PSX games were in Jewel cases but PS2 games are in DVD-style cases. My guess is that the marketers want people to see games in the same way they see movies, some sort of integral part of their entertainment collection sort of thing. Maybe I'm not wording that right. All I'm saying is that I think that PS2 games are in DVD boxes for a reason, marketing-wise.

If all games still came in Jewel cases, then I could add an additional shelf to the bookcases that I use to hold my games.

they should make teh boxes the way they want, hell i'd be happy with cardboard boxes if they did pack in some kind of extra, kinda like an small plush or something.

personally i love the ds cases, they are compact, hold manual well, great socket for ds game, and nifty holder for those loose gba games.

as for the dvd cases for GC/XBOX/PS2, i like them too, especially GC, room for nice big color manual, games is FIRMLY held in middle and a nifty spot for memory card. woohoo.

and for all dvd cases in general, they are great cause they dont crack like jewel cases do (in shipping, while dropping, accidently stepping on them etc) and i believe they are actually more secure and look nicer on the shelf, thats just me though.

i never want to see another jewel case based game distribution in my life. or cartboard for that matter (gba was the last system it seems)

They're better than the cheap cardboard boxes the GBA games come in, that's for sure. Not quite as good as the Neo Pocket Snap lock cases though..

I love the DS boxes. They're awesome. They're nice and small, and won't look like crap if I accidently crush the box, like with a GBA box.

I love that the DS boxes are CD jewel case sized.

I have broken sooo many CD jewel cases....they are too fragile !I hate the look of them, so cheap :/ Just yesterday, idropped a PS1 game on my CARPET, and the lid snapped off and cracked it. I hope those cases are as gone as cardboard ones. Why would anyone want those to be brought back?
I also find the games fall out of jewel cases easily comparedto DVD style cases. This is one of the main reasons im selling off my PS1 collection soon...

I love my DS cases, but I have an idea for travel cases. A full size dvd case that can hold about 10 games. Same way the singles hold it, except bigger and could hold more. I think that would be an easy way to carry around games.

The DS cases are cool. I hate cardboard cause there always getting bent, and a dvd case would be a waste for such a little game. If the cases got any smaller though, they would be to easy to find. I like the whole DVD meets CD case kinda thing.

DS cases are the best in a long time : easy to store yet different enough from everything else (better looking than DVD cases, more sturdy than cardbox)... Nintendo always had the best cases : Super Famicom, Jp GC and now DS, they all look good on a shelf (well ok the SUper Famicom is mostly because of the great design they had... most of them at least).

Notice they're all Japanese boxes! The US and PAL boxes for the NES, SNES, and all the Gameboys are Shite! Though I concede the 'Cube boxes are passable, if a touch dull :)

So they made the case the same size. I would have liked the Japanese ones, but these are fine. Besides, the Japanese boxes are tiny. Wow tiny. Actually, if they could have put the Cube games in boxes the size of the DS games boxes, that would have been a nice space saver as well.
