This is the sort of thing where our apparently once-again-functional search feature works wonders. Behold! (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3450) 8-)

I meant the games that were out first week/month after the system´s launch, sorry. :/ :embarrassed:

About the same. ;)

Really, VERY few games for MOST systems got released within the first month of a system. People would rush to get their games out with the consoles and then new titles are few and far between. Almost every console has been like that.

I'd even go one step further and argue it takes about a year for a new system to get the 'killer app' games out for it.

Unfortunately, those are pack-ins and not launch titles. I tried using the search and couldn't find the launch title listing, although I remember being in a thread just like this within the last few months...

I agree with most of this. It seems that after the launch, few games are released for each console. I wouldn't agree about the killer app games, as almost every console released now needs at least one when it comes out. Here are some that I remember as killer apps that I believe were launch titles:

Jaguar - Cybermorph
Playstation - Ridge Racer
Nintendo 64 - Mario 64
Dreamcast - Soul Calibur, NFL 2K

I would agree that the current crop of consoles is light on killer apps on the release date:

Playstation 2 - nothing immediately
GameCube - nothing immediately
Xbox - nothing immediately (Halo was a release title IIRC, but it wasn't considered a killer app immediately, again, IIRC)
Nintendo DS - nothing yet

It seems to be a newer trend though, one that has companies pushing the hardware out the door to customers so that there isn't shortages and more people demand the killer apps that are released.

Perhaps the extremely successful Dreamcast release changed the notion of the industry, as it was generally regarded as one of the best launches ever, but was followed by a long time of the DC not being big news. If Sega's launch hadn't had Soul Calibur and NFL 2K, they could've released them both after the release of the console and kept at the top of the industry move for three months instead of just one. Would that have helped in the long run? Who knows, but it would've been interesting.

I have a list of the NES ones on my other computer. I'm posting now as a way to bookmark this forum and will post them when I get to work tomorrow.
