Pac Man speed cheat

How come when you use the Pac Man speed cheat, the intermissions get messed up? I noticed this in MAME but I thought it was just a MAME thing, but then over the weekend I encountered a real Pac Man cab and the same thing happened.

Probably because it's a hack and it screws up the timing somehow.
