"Hmm THREE D I'll just pass on the last one (Objects) but it's pretty obvious."

The meaning (depending who you hear it from) is one of two things:

1. The next step in audiovisual entertainment (Audio, Video, 3DO)

2. Abolutely without meaning, but rolls off the tongue nicely.

It's sort of the same case with DVD, where (supposedly) it doesn't mean digital video OR versatile disc. "It just sounded neat." i don't know if I buy that, but it's certainly been reported enough times.

My best friend & I always laughed whenever we played a 3DO game because as soon as the system started up with the 3DO logo, he'd say "Three DOO!" & I'd say "Three DOH!" because we'd pronounce the DO part as either the act of doing something or the musical note. This always led to us busting out with a brief rendition of "You say toMAYto and I say toMAHto!" which ended with "Three DOO, Three DOH, Let's call the whole thing off!" and then we'd pop in a game for another system that we could play without making fun of.

Thanks you for such an amusing reply, Ravelflack :-P Speaking of which...

"Perhaps 'Sega PROFESSOR' for an indication of mastery of a discipline?"

Nah. Sega already covered such teritory by naming their 8bit console the Master System.

BEST Named:

Neo Geo AES / MVS (just sounds cool)
Gameboy (its not a boy, or is it)
XBox (just to piss everyone off)
Dreamcast (i think it sounds neat)

WORST Named:

Playstation (unoriginal)
Playstation 2 (see above, but worse)
Gameboy Pocket, Color, Advance, Advance SP (unoriginal, but, they might not have sold as well if nintendo took the word "gameboy" out of their names)

I never liked the UK name for the genesis (aka the megadrive, were's the steering wheel and pedals?)

Also Sega in Italian means wank (jerking off) or something Close to that, So you have the jerk off master system, or the great "hand held" Jerk off game gear, So Sonic was a jerk off all along!. LOL

i would say playstation, sadly , when i first heard that name i thought it was some kind of play house or something your parents set up for you when you were little like a little plastic house or something... "play" station? seems like an area you play in. :hmm:

Best:
Neo-Geo, hands down. Although I say it to the un-initiated and they look at me like I spoke in yiddish.

Turbo Duo: another rhyming one. Sounds infinitely better than Turbo Grafx-16.

Dreamcast: I actually like this name. Always sounded cool to me.

Worst:
XBox: sounds too contrived
32X : not at all original
PlayStation2: originality at it's finest (although I think PS2 sounds cool)

"Katana" and "Black Belt" would appeal to the 10-14 year old segment of the population that tends to drool over Ninjas and Swords and Things from Japan, as well as the "adults" saddled with stunted and retarded mental growth who feel the same way.

I think the worst named system is the Sega CD. Ok its made by Sega and it plays CD's. Sega CD brilliant. So unoriginal

I really like "Sega Saturn", aswell as the logo. It would be so great if Sega made more system with this kind of names, like the Sega Neptune that never was released (anyway it was going to be another waste, but the name was cool, I like astrologic-like names :P)

I also like Genesis/Megadrive (it just sound nice), Master System, game boy.

I don't like...
Nintendo 64, I really liked Ultra 64, Ultra...such a great name for a console, but then it became just N64, very disappointing.
Playstation and Xbox are indeed moronic names.

Genesis was the best name because in one word it meant a new beginging basically. Too bad it didnt last like it should have.
I do also like most of the acronym systems NES SNES GBA DC PS2 N64 etc
Do not like GCN. But Most systems i dont have a problem with its name.

Another funny made up system is GameCast. The guy in Malibu's Most Wanted had one because he was to poor to afford Gamecube or Dreamcast.

Too bad it didnt last like it should have.
So a solid six/seven year run doesn't cut it anymore, huh? If anything, the Genesis had too long a run and the devs didn't really know what to do with building off that success.

I just think most people dont give it the credit it deserves shoulda made that more clear.

True. I think somewhere along the line people started thinking of it as "that console with the bad sports games and the crappy games by Acclaim and Virgin, Sony, etc." (though I can name games by each of them that I like a whole lot...)

Worst: Playstation tied with Nintendo Entertainment System(PS2 and SNES also get grouped here by default).

Best: PC Engine tied with Intellivision(it's intelligent television).

So essentially, trying to pretend your woefully underpowered 8-bitter is really a homerun hitter is awesome?

As for Intellivision, that's just the 1970s equivalent of the PlayStation name, and for more than the grouping of two words. It's got "VISION" in there...can't get much more '70s than that.

Yeah, I know it was released in 1980. Still as much a product of the seventies as the VCS was.

I'd say they're all pretty retarded.

But what would you name a system or company.

I always have hated sequels:

Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Playstation 2

I like new, original names no matter how stupid sounding they are. I especially like series -- The Lynx, Panther and then Jaguar was a neat idea even though only two came out. I also liked the 2600, 5200 and 7800, even though those were kinda sequels of their own.

Gonna have to go with the FM Towns Marty as the worst. I don't know squat about the system, so for all I know the name makes sense, but it cracks me up everytime I see it.

Best: Jaguar, Saturn.

worst - Tandyvision and Game and Watch...

best - I always liked "Dolphin Project" for some reason. I just remember being in my friends backyard talking about the N64, and he said "Do you know that Nintendo is working on a new system called Dolphin"
I was so psyched. But that was like 1997 or something

I still think Playstation is the worst possible name for a console. It sounds like a deluxe masturbation kit.

if nintendo wudda stuck wid its oriiginal name for nintendo 64, being ULTRA 64. .. shit wuddda been an ill ass name.. anybody dat dagree? fa shee man...

Are you serious....or kidding? Yeah :/

Anyways, best for me is the Turbo Duo or the Atari Jaguar(I remember thinking that was a great name at launch).

Worst is the Playstation. Somebody else said it already, but when it came otu in the press, it really did remind me of a playschool toy for children. I thought to myself "The Katana is going to destroy that piece of crap."

The best is the Japanese Super Grafx. I remember reading about it in EGM and eagerly awaiting for its release in the US, along with the Konix Multi System (another cool sounding system).

Best I'd have to go Sega Genesis, worst I'd have to go 3DO.

3:17 Board Room meeting

Marketing Genius- How will people know the console is 3D.
Trip Hawkins- How 'bout the 3D
Buisnessman- Sounds too forced.
Trip Hawkins- 3D oh chinese is here.
Marketing Genius- 3DO, that's genius, no wonder you left EA.

Gotta go with the majority here: Sega Genesis. Sounds damn cool, and has great significance. Other good ones: Sega Master System and Magnavox Odyssey. I do like the sound of Nintendo Revolution, too.

PlayStation and Nintendo 64 are both horrible, but I do like the sound of PSX (not PS1) and N64.

GameCube... N-Gage... TurboGrafx-16

I wasn't translating it. LOL I always considered it the Nex Gen console since it was still having software being made 10 years after its release.
