View Full Version : Definite answer on the FDS's use of sound channels?

I've been hearing that the FDS has five "extra" sound channels. How exactly does the FDS change the sound picture? Don't really have a way of breaking out the Sharp Twin at the moment, so does anybody have an answer?

From what I've seen on emulator info pages, the FDS has one sound channel - like you say - AND FM sound capability. Whuuuh?!

Hmm. wierd, as Dracula 2: The Accursed Seal (Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest) sounds AWFUL on the FDS.

Basically, it has an extra sound channel with (IMO) noticeably louder results. Paluntena no Kagami (the Japanese Kid Icarus) has some speech when you get damaged, as opposed to the squeaks on the NES, and the opening theme and end credits use the extra channel to add an instrument to the music. Also, a great deal of the effects in Super Mario Bros. 2 are down-sampled (and much quieter) versions of the effects in Doki Doki Panic.

Speech? Nice.

Not really-it's such a very short, very unintelligible yelp.

Oh. :(

That's what I get for only having a sealed copy of the game >:P

I think the LOZ2 opening theme on FDS sounds different than the US vers

Ed, you rock. I've been saying this about many FDS versions for a while...everyone is sort like, "What?! The FDS version is so much better!"

I really can't stand the FDS version of the music in some games. Most of it sounds completely inferior to me in all but a few rare cases.

Yes, but the first boss, Cerberus the 3-headed dog actually barks too. I was actually surprised at the amount of subtle, and sometimes much less subtle differences in the FDS version as opposed to the cart. There's quite a few differences, especially in the last level.

Nazo no Murasamejoh, Arumana no Kiseki best FDS music ever.

The FDS Zelda intro music also runs on the extra sound channel.

And also speaking about Gyruss, the FDS arrangements sound more awesome than the American NES.

Yeah, that's a game I'm definitely in the market to get the ad for :)

However, my only chance to "hear" the game in action thus far was via *.NSF and it sounded rather odd there...I'm definitely gonna reserve my opinion on that one (same with some of the other titles I've heard NSF-only) but so far I'm not sure how it can sound much better on the real thing.

The biggest being the @^%$ing requirements for the best ending. :grrr:
