why cant I get Killer Instinct to work with my new MAME 0.81 emulator?
its says kins.chd not found when I try to launch it why is it missing that one file? or do I not have the emu set up right or did I download a corrupt rom?

Yep, you are probably missing the .chd file. They are seperate from the actual rom archive.

You probably don't have a complete rom. Bigger game ROM's consist of many files, and if even one is missing they the game won't run. Try finding another KI ROM and see if the file size differs, and then use the bigger one and see if it works. Also with some games (like neo geo ones) you need a special BIOS to run that type of game. I'm not sure if KI or .chd ROMs need this though.

Missing the CHD is quite different from having an incomplete ROM set (and actually, CHD files aren't ROMs at all, but a form of disk image, as far as MAME goes). Basically you need to go out and find the CHD. Shouldn't be too hard if you know where to look.

I have inserted a subfolder in my MAME ROMs directory just for CHDs, and it works very nicely in keeping things sorted out a little.

I really dont know where to find a chd file but I do understand how the bios works on NEO-GEO took me a while but I got my Nebula emu working great now
if anyone knows where to locate the chd files would be verrry helpful I could die happy being able to play the real KI arcade game on my new PC I used to spend about 50$ a week pumping quarters into that machine back in the day @_@

Unless you have a VERY decent computer trying to run this, KI is one of the hardest games to emulate (along with cruisin USA/World, NFL Blitz, and to a much lower extent - MK games)

So not only do you have to get working copies of KI roms and .chds, you're going to need a P4 2.8 with a gig of ram most likely :)

Actually, while still needing a lot of juice, relative to most of the other CHD games KI isn't that bad at all. As far as where to find the CHD, most of the places you find roms will also have the CHD files.
