I ran across a cheap little game guide auction on eBay and the seller unequivocally states that Versus guides from the PSX era are less common than Brady guides, stating that

This guide is in Mint condition. Includes giant poster inside still intact. Final Fantasy VII Versus guides sell for $70+ and we had a Metal Gear Guide by versus in worse condition than this [note: worse than mint? Form text is hillarious] sell for over $30. Versus guides are hard to come by. All the pages look perfect. You can see the condition from the picture.

Here's a link to the auction: xlic (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15302&item=8148128527)

They want $30 for the guide, less S&H.

My question, then: What's the norm for these guides?

Yeah, I would say that in general Versus guides are rarer and more valuable than Prima and Brady guides. Of course the game its based on is the main factor in a guide's value. Obviously a guide based on a popular, valuable RPG will also be fairly valuable. For example, as Valkyrie Profile went up in value, so did its guide despite that it's a relatively common Prima guide.

Wow, I've got some of those, I never knew they were worth anything. Too bad I lent my friend the FF7 one and when I got it back it was all bent and in pretty bad condition. :(

The norm: from 50 cents to $60. :)

There is hardly a general rule for the price of guides by different publishers. If there is any, then it is: 1) the higher in demand the game, the more you buy for the guide, 2) guides for RPGs are usually much more expensive than for other genres.

The supposedly 'rarer' Versus guides is ebay talk. The game determines the price, not the publisher. Versus guides have a lower print run, but that isn't enough to come even close to the specific game. $30 for the Dino Crisis guide is heavily overpriced, don't buy it, be patient, and sooner or later you'll get it MUCH cheaper. (got mine around a year ago in great condition for $4)
