View Full Version : Star Wars ruined my Xbox

I got the January issue of Gamepro today and in the Buyer Beware section someone had written a letter concerning rumors that the demo of Star Wars: Battlefront that came with the trilogy set will cause the console to crash by updating the dashboard. Gamepro responded that it would only affect modded Xboxes that use old dashboard software.

However, that is exactly what happened to my unmodded Xbox. When I put the bonus disk in to play the demo, it said something about updating Xbox live, and then gave me the "Your Xbox requires service" message. At the time I thought it was just the hard drive/disk drive going bad, even though I thought it was odd because I really don't play it all that much.

But now I see that it really was the demo disk in combination with the fact that I have outdated dashboard software (I had Xbox live up until 1.5 years ago, since I no longer have broadband), and I'm kinda pissed, since my Xbox is pretty much unplayable now. Microsoft of course will fix it for the low price of $79.99 plus shipping (yeah, right).

Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know if it's possible somehow to reset the system? I should mention that this happened two days after I bought Fable, and I haven't been able to play it since, arrgh.

Why in THE hell should GamePro have to do anything about anyone's Xbox? The magazine is most likely reporting what it was told by LucasArts.

Guess I was lucky to have an updated dashboard then. Tried the demo on my Xbox a couple of times with no problems. I do have Live 3.0 though so...

Microsoft should definitly help you out without charging you. Don't they even test stuff before releasing it?? or do they assume people all have Live ?? Not a good assumption to make.

I made a backup of the disc 4 of the star wars dvd set and manually took out the offending file. I like to watch on my xbox so this was an easy fix :P

Write a leter to LucasArts and see if they'll fix it.

Yeah, I think I'll write to Microsoft and Lucasarts. Can't hurt.

This might sound like a crazy idea, and I've never tried it. But if I was in your predicament I would take out the hard drive and install it as a slave on my computer and try to find and delete the network/xbox live files. I'm assuming you would be able to view the files in windows. If not, I'm sure there must be some kind of xbox file viewer/utility floating around on the net. In any case I don't think you would hurt you hard drive, and you could always pop it back in.

"You got Xbox in my Star Wars!"
"You got Star Wars in my Xbox!"

Hrm, this is the SECOND time a demo disc has screwed over players in the past month (the first being that PS2 Viewtiful Joe 2 demo).
*Plans on being cautious with any demos released for the Cube in the future* O_O

I think Halo 2 ruined my XBOX. I rented the game at Blockbuster, and then after that, all my apps other than "Launch DVD" dissapeared from my Evox dashboard menu.

I don't know what the heck happened, and I don't know how to fix it.

I know some people will say, "Well that's what you get for having a mod chip on your Xbox".

maybe so.

Well.. put it back in! Evox is 100% customizable... look at your evox.ini file and put in some brainpower ;)

I played the Battlefront Demo out. I must have played it 25 times through, with each side, as a relaxing experience betweeen study sessions.

My Xbox seems fine.
