View Full Version : Warioworld rental version - Rare?

A few months ago I bought a PAL Warioworld GameCube game. It was officially factory sealed with the red tear strip and everything...

As soon as I got it, I opened it up to play, and the first thing that struck me was the lack of any VIP Stars leaflet which I was led to believe all first party Nintendo GameCube games came with...

Anyway, as I stuck the disc in the Cube, I noticed the disc had a small holographic sticker on it. On the hologram it clearly said "Authorised For Rental" and then the Nintendo logo bar...

I was gutted.

I double checked the box, and on the spine and on the back it clearly said "Authorised For Rental" as well!!!

Ah, a few things finally clicked into place - Like the fact that the person was selling it for a tenner BIN, and why it didn't have VIP Stars inside!

What I reckon must've happened, is someone who works in a place like Blockbuster Video swiped it (Still sealed) and flogged it quickly on eBay!

I wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience... I know there are people who buy ex-rentals pre-owned, so that's not the same thing. That's deliberate and chances are you know it's an ex-rental when you buy it.

Do you reckon that hologram makes the game any rarer? I've not seen any around since...

It would make it rarer if it was an official Nintendo sticker. If a store like blockbuster put it there themselves, it will just bring the value down. It sounds like a NOT FOR RESALE kinda thing, but I have never seen what you are talking about.

Like I said, the game was officially sealed, so it couldn't have been put there by anyone else but Nintendo. And yes, it is an official Nintendo hologram.

I haven't even tried to remove it as I know that it is probably designed to crumble in a million pieces if I tried. Either that or it will damage the game data beneath it...

I will try to sort out a photo of it as soon as I dig the game out - I can't remember where I stored it...

Just out of curiosity though - I thought you're not supposed to put stickers onto discs as it causes them to spin faster or something...

I never even played the game for fear of this, so I went and bought another proper version last week.

I would say it's a pretty good score. I mean, how many people are going to buy a GC from Blockbuster? I say put it on the shelf and get a different Gamecube to play (well, maybe I wouldn't got that far. :-)

But seriously, it must e rarer than your standard fare. Nice find (and observation)...even if it was an accident. :-)

He's speaking about the game "Wario World"

You just said something that stated a completly OTHER statement about a gamecube.

This is not about a gamecube, it's about a game.

NOW time for my actual take on it:

I think it's unique in the sense it's a rental that never got to being rented!

Oh. Pfff...what he said. LOL

Man, I'm out of it today. Sorry.

I misunderstood...I thought the game came with a GC you bought. Not sure where I got that from.

But ok, on the same page now. I would imagine it's a good amount rarer than other non-rental copies, considering most are sent to retail stores and not rental outlets. Higher in value? Probably not much more...my shot in the dark is maybe 10%.

Is it Friday yet? <checks calendar>

Shit.

I have never seen any other Ex-rental versions of it on eBay, so either the rental stores haven't yet made it an Ex-rental yet, or maybe they aren't allowed to...

That thing is pretty cool. Kind of what I expected, but I have never seen that sticker. It is a demo version I assume. Worth some more then a normal copy.

Very cool. I have never even heard of anything like that. I wonder if it is also done in the states.
Guess i should reconsider working at BlockBuster if it is LOL

You see ex-rental PSone games all the time on eBay. They are the ones in the crappy plastic cases and often come with no instructions.

Rental PSone games often have specially designed disc information though. Not a normal picture like usual.

This is bizarre though. I haven't even seen any rental games in Blockbuster which have the hologram on them - As far as I know, all current rental games are identical to their retail counterparts...

And I am surprised Nintendo went to the effort of printing a completely different cover for the game too!

Tell you something i just noticed - THE BAR CODES ARE DIFFERENT TOO!!!

The bar code on the rental copy reads - 0 45496 39100 3

Whereas the bar code on the new copy I just brought is - 0 45496 96040 7

Now that is a revelation and a half!!!

I had thought that one or the other of these copies may be a continental version... But the fact that both have the code: DOL-GWWP-UKV on them, leads me to believe they are both of UK origin.

I think I may keep hold of it for a while longer until I can actually gain a little extra info on this particular copy I have...

One question - Does the regular version have VIP Stars inside (Anyone else got it here?) - I don't really want to open my second proper copy seeing as I already have one open...

Um no. I suggest you actually learn PROPER ENGLISH instead. The spelling is actually CORRECT.

And seeing as this is a PAL game, it makes it even more correct, as the spelling is correct in it's own region.

Pehaps if it were an NTSC version, you may perceive it as being wrong (Although technically still correct)

Now go sit in the corner and write me a 1000 essay about how there is no such thing as "American English"!

He means the spelling is correct for British English.

Just like we spell it 'armor' over here. ;)

Now, I'd argue American English has become the 'proper' language these days because more people in the world speak it. :P

..."authorise" is also correct as Canadian English. Although we tend to see more and more of the US spelling of words, we still spell centre, theatre, etc.

And Z = zed, not zee (I always have to watch out about the letter Z when I call some US customer service or what not, especially since it's in my postal code...)

Going off topic people...

Anyway, localisation aside, it is still pretty unique. Especially the fact that Nintendo themselves have actually taken the time and effort to create something separate from a retail version.

The bar codes are pretty significant I would have thought, as well as that specialist hologram on the disc.

I still think it is awesome.
You should ask Nintendo about it. and tell us what their reply is.

I did ask them about it. They wouldn't believe me that I bought it officially sealed. They just said I must've got hold of it as an ex-rental. I then replied telling them I bought it sealed off eBay and they never wrote back...

If anyone else wants to give it a try, then feel free to use my picture's as reference. You could perhaps ask how many were produced and whether it could be considered a rare Nintendo collectable!

I will give it a try sometime this weekend hopefully.
