I was reading the "What's your rarest game" thread in classic discussions and theaveng said he had a Final Fantasy cart for atari and no one said anything about it so does it really exist?

Nope. It's an old April Fool's joke (can't remember from whom... was it EGM?). The one that still get people because it was somewhat believable is last spring's EGM April Fool joke (the one about the unlockable Sonic characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee). Nintendo Power was still recently debugging that myth in its mailbag.

I dunno. I always kinda enjoyed Doom for the Atari 2600. (http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Arcade/8691/2600DOOM.HTM)

It's not very believeable is it. I mean, there are way too many colors on one screen (2600 allowed 4 at once) and no flicker, either. Pffft!

Actually, that wasn't SUPPOSED to be believable. It was supposed to be an obvious April Fool's joke. Why?
See, what the now-defunct Gaming Intelligence Agency did was craft this story and put it at the top of their page on April Fools' Day. Then, with the aid of some superior talent, they put a story directly below it of "Final Fantasy Gaiden", which was a very well done and truly believable tale of a sequel to Final Fantasy VIII.
The pics (and VIDEO) of FF Gaiden were fantastic and would have fooled a lot of people anyway, but since GIA had already established themselves as doing April Fools' jokes each year, nobody would have believed it. But with the decoy joke - FF on the 2600 - in place, FF Gaiden fooled a whole lot of people.
In short, the above pic was no less than a work of genius.
And: hair bead? Isn't that the Holy materia?

I'm still waiting for Ys Infinity, myself.
And let's not forget EGM's classic April Fool's gag of revealing Sheng Long as a hidden character in the Street Fighter series. Twice. (http://www.videogames.com/features/universal/sfhistory/char_sheng_long.html)
Footnote: Yeah, I think that's the Holy materia, though from what I remember, it was actually recovered under the ocean somewhere. I need to play FFVII again.

It wasn't EGM's Neptune hoax that hurt me so much as it was their promise that Virtua Hamster would be bundled with the system.

Haha Neptune.
I remember deciding finally after a few days that I was gonna spend the cash and went to the site.... F'ers!!! Some people were pissed about it and wrote letters telling them what A-Holes they were.
Some people got no sense of humor. LOL

I'm sure more than 4 colors could be permitted at once In fact, here's an actual screenshot from Adventure of Tron that shows a total of 106 distinctive colors:

If you mean per scanline, that's another story.
haha ahahahaha I made that my avatar
edit: I'm going to get someone to shrink this, trust me.

As far as colors on an Atari 2600 screen: just 4? What about Star Trek (when you destroy NOMAD) and Air/Sea Battle?
