View Full Version : What PS2 games make Cube and XBOX gamers jealous?

I have a Xbox and Gamecube. I don't have a PS2. I did, for the first 8 months it was available, but then I got rid of it, never to get one again.
Anyways, I'm finally going to be getting one real soon. Having been out of the loop when it comes to PS2 games, I'm curious as to what PS2 games are the cream of the crop. The PS2 games that make GameCube and XBOX owners extremely jealous.
Obviously San Andreas is one of them, until it's ported over to the XBOX anyways. Killzone is probably another one. All the great 3D platformers, like the Jak series and the Ratchet and Clank series. And stuff like the Gradius game and the R-Type game, and stuff like that.
Of course, there are tons and tons of exclusives that I'm forgetting about.
Basically, I'm curious as to what games the PS2 has that the Cube and XBOX don't have, that are good games. I'm talking from the time the PS2 first came out until now. They don't need to be new games. Just good exclusives.
Any help you guys can provide would be great.
Oh, if the game has a progressive scan 480p mode, then that is even better. I know that very few PS2 games have a 480p mode, but I know that a few of them do.

Well, speaking for myself my favorites have been--
Twisted Metal Black--the first game I REALLY got into on the PS2
Ico--any game heavy on atmosphere, I'm a sucker for
Devil May Cry--after the first couple of levels, this is probably the most fun I've had with a PS2 game
Silent Hill 2 and 3--I haven't played 4, but Christmas is coming. Of course, 2 is available on X-Box as is 4. See Ico comment
and my guilty pleasure . . .
Kingdom Hearts--Admitedly, this is kind of an uneven game. There were many times went it made me angry enough to quit and spew forth a foul string of endless profanities. The camera can really suck(I HATED jumping around in Wonderland), some of the level design was weak (see Wonderland again), flying the gummi ship is totally lame, and some of the bosses are silly tough (in a frustrating way, not challenging way). All that said, it's such a goofy concept with such fun cinemas that I am indeed eyeing the sequal. When the game hits its target, it's definitely a blast.

Metal Gear Solid 3 :D
I used to have both a gamecube and Xbox but many of the games that I actually wanted were on all 3 formats and once they announced that Silent Hill 3 and MGS3 would not be on any other platform that pretty much sealed the deal with me.
after trading and selling my whole Gamecube and Xbox collection (including all the games) I havent looked back although I may pick up a used 'cube just for Zelda ;)

Anthony,
it's so easy to find on the forums.
http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4922
Look at the titles with the "*" on them. Those are PS2 exclusives, and games that the forum (over the course of a full year) feel are top-notch titles. This compiled list answers your question.
Well, MY reasons for owning a PS2 are for games like FFX, FFX2, Turismo, Downhill Domination (I'm a mountain biker),Jak N Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, the Silent Hills and smaller unique games like Mark Of Kri.......as well as the back catalogue of PSX titles.
The PS2 still holds onto some fairly impressive exclusives, even in this day and age of portovers.

I'll toss Amplitude and FreQuency in there for good measure.
I'd add MGS and GTA but they'll end up on the Xbox at some point anyway. *shrug*

I thought Ace Combat 4 was very good (haven't played 5 yet).
SOCOM and SOCOM II are very popular.

I would have to say its the platformers and RPGs.
Ratchet & Clank was the reason I got a PS2 in the first place. so...
Ratchet & Clank [1,2,3]
Jak [1,2,3]
Xenosaga
Square-Enix games [Final Fantasy X, X-2, XI, Star Ocean, etc, etc, etc]
Of course, GTA: San Andreas
And also a lot of people here seem to have forgotten all about Gran Turisimo, I think that series makes a lot of Xbox and GameCube owners jealous.

Kingdom Hearts, Rachet and Clank and Sly Cooper is enough to entice me to purchase a PS2 sometime down the road.... maybe when they drop to $50 :P

I agree. There isn't much more that I would want to play that is for PS2. Same for Xbox. I'm more into GameCube games myself. Just wish it could have more 2D fighting games and shmups. :-P

Gitaroo Man!
I couldn't agree more. That game would be the only reason I would ever get a PS2. It is such a fun game. :)
Now, for the 'Cube (planned as one of my next buys)... Metroid Prime comes to mind, Ikaruga and the Zeldas.

After looking at the older list of exclusives, I would have to say that these are the ones that I want to play most, but I'm sure that I'm forgetting alot of the older games.
Contra - any of the PS2 contra games
Devil May Cry - might as well check it out
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec - kinda dated but I wouldn't mind playing
Ico - When I had a PS2 for a brief period of time, this was definitely my favorite game on the system
Jak and Daxter - haven't played any of them.
Maximo - definitely want to play this
R Type Final - I love shooters
Ratchet & Clank - haven't played any of them
Sly Cooper - seems kinda cool
Twisted Metal Black - I know it's kinda old, but I woud like to check it out
Virtua Fighter 4 - isn't this an exclusive?
Gradius V - definitely want this puppy

I have already gotten rid of my ps2 3 times because of the lack of decent games, not to mention the poorly engineered hardware. There are more worthwhile Jaguar games if ya ask me. But as for games.
Personally, I haven't liked anything square has put out for a long time. Weak gameplay, poor character designs, IMO. I usually like more complex battle, item, etc. systems though ( especially ones that appear simple on the surface). Also keep in mind that many of my favorite RPGs never show their face in the states.
The gameplay in VF4 doesn't feel right to me (compared to 1-3), and I am rather ticked at Sega for not porting it to a system where it can look anything like the arcade version. I usually just play VF2 regardless.
I have never liked Gran Turismo (Sorry its just an awful, awful "game"!!)
I have never been a huge fan of Gradius, though Gradius 2 (on PCE) is very nice.
I don't see any real improvent over the original RType in RType final.
(The arcade, PCE, and SMS versions anyway)
As far as shooters are concerned I would rather play (neo)classics on PCE, Megadrive, Saturn, etc. (All much better systems to spend money on even today) or Defender for that matter. Gameplay first!
If you strongly disagree with any of the above feel free to play whatever you want. I just put this out there in case someone is about to make the costlly mistake I did.
P.S. I still have a ps2 and Katamari Damacy looks interesting. I also like Nippon Ichi's SRPG'S but they are probably an acquired taste (and nowhere near as good as Langrisser or even Black Matrix). Some decent platformers are on there too.

As both an X-box, and PS2 owner the things I most long for on the box are not so much particular games, more like entire genres. RPGs being one of them. Its true we have games like Morrowind, Knights of the old Republic, and Fable, but what I want most are RPGs simular to what I grew up on. Games like Lufia, Final Fantasy, Ogre Battle, and Dragon Warrior. These new type RPGs give the impresion its all about graphics and total emersion but when I play them, I dont get the feeling of being lost in the game so much as just being lost. If I wanted to be lost without a clue, I'd go study my school work. Other stuff I miss is some of the strat games. Games like Romance of the 3 Kingdoms, PTO, and such. The last two areas I feel are lacking on the X-box are shooters and anime themed. I realize games like DBZ are out for the x-box, but thats not what I want. I want the games like Inu-Yasha, .hack/sign, cowboy bebop, and Lupin. Some shooters like R-Type, Gradius, Darius Twin, and Ikiruga wouldnt hurt either. Basicly, I like my X-box for the same exact reasons I liked it when I first got it. The hard drive, the built in 4 controler ports, and the built in broadband. I dont consider this a good thing as there have been little released sense to make me apericiate my purchase any more then when I originaly got it. Yes, the games look better on the X-box. They should. Problem is, I aint finding that many that are fun to play. When they do a game right, it blows anything the PS2 does away. Problem is, so many of the 3rd party developers are only interested in status quoes and only want to push graphic games that feature poor controls and poor gameplay. Sony has has a number of breaks when it comes to gaming. With its incredable 3rd party support, it has a liabrary of top titles at its disposale. Thats just in re-releases at that! If Microsoft ever got on the ball and started trying to secure some of these companies more lucrative franchises, I'm certain I would enjoy it more. I'd like it alot more if they tried for more multi platform releases that were released simultanious rather then six months after the PS2 version was released and had its price cut to greatest hits price. Why would I want to pay 50$ for an x-box version of a game thats only 20$ on the PS2? Because the main charcters are wearing bikini tops? Is this soposed to be worth 30$ more?

RPG's were the only reason I ever bothered with Sony consoles. There were always better shooters etc. on other systems (Saturn, Dreamcast, PC Engine and on and on...). Since then the quality of PS+PS2 rpg's has gone down dramatically and I have found that I would rather collect old school import RPG's than mess with the recent junk. Of course if you can't read japanese (I can) collecting old RPG'S is stupidly expensive. On ps2, I did like Xenosaga and Disgaea though. Tales of Symphonia is nice (I refuse to play some after the fact port of it on PS2 that only exists because of some whiny fans over there). If the PS2 had more good RPG's I would probably just ignore the other problems like I did with the PSX.
