So I picked up one of those Blue Game Gears, and the first thing I do is test my Master Gear Converter with it. Seems to work okay, but then I notice...a Mark III logo!? It seems that whenever I use my Master Gear Converter with this Blue Game Gear, it uses the SMS Japanese region! The menus are in Japanese, all the in-game text is in Japanese, the aforementioned Mark III logo...et cetera. Anybody know how this could happen? As far as I know, both the Game Gear and the Converter are American. It's cool, but it's also kinda freaky.

Did you buy a Japanese Game Gear? Where did you buy it....perhaps it ISN'T American?

I bought it at a pawn shop.
The serial number on the back matches an American system. And the copyright screen is the same as an American system. I dunno...I think it is an American system, but I can't be 100% sure...

Possibly dirty contacts on either the GG or the SMS convertor?
Several early SMS games also have the Japanese Mark III code in them (which can be seen on a modded SMS or region-modded Genny/MD+PBC).
I've heard of this mode being seen on non-modded machines occasionally aswell, though it usually doesn't happen after a thorough cleaning.

Well, the Game Gear I got is really dirty. I bet that's the culprit.
Now to decide whether to clean it or not. :P

I always wondered what caused that for some folks...never had it happen to me. BTW, even if the converter was Japanese, it wouldn't have done it since they tdon't have any electronics inside. It's just a passthrough connector.
