**Awaits the Halo and Xbox bashers....**
If indeed that story is true, that would be an incredible accomplishment.
Has any other game even come close in about a 3 week period?

Those are some amazing sales if they are accurate. 5 million sold in under a month is crazy !

Well, 5 million people can't all be wrong, can they? LOL In all seriousness, I'm not holding my breath but I do expect when I finally pick it up (at my price) that I'll enjoy it immensely.

and yet some time, some where somebody will still describe this game as rare in an eBay auction. :)

We watched a behind the scenes video on making Halo 2 (i'm guessing it comes with the collector's set) in class today. It honestly makes me think I need to edit my Christmas wish list. :D

The last time I saw XBox figures it was around 8 million.

Good. I hope the price drops significantly in the next year (used anyways). I rented it and finished it. Like many gamers I was unhappy with the ending and kinda slagged it for that reason. But now that I've been away from it for 3 weeks I can honestly say I thought it was great regardless of the appearance of the flood (which I really hated). I just don't want to play it for a good 10 months.

Its nice the idea that Halo 2 could sell so many copies but I only have one question. How many copies of both Halo 1 and Halo 2 must be sold before they drop the price of Halo 1 down to 20$ new? How many? I still refuse to spend 30$ on a game thats sold as many copies as Halo 1 has. Its not that my general hatred of FPS games has lead me to belive this is a bad series of games, just that I refuse to pay 30$ for a game thats sold over 4 million copies.

Fuyukaze, you just need a keen eye and the Sunday newspaper. Circuit City and Best Buy run it cheap all the time.

It was only $15 at Best Buy 2 weeks ago...

Personally I don't believe that it sold 5 million units. MS is known for making up numbers.

I definitely believe it. I don't quite understand it though. It is a very cool series, don't get me wrong, but just feels run of the mill to me. Just not a diehard FPS person I guess.
I love my XBox for Panzer Dragoon Orta, Otogi & Outrun 2.

Sold to retailers or sold to end-users? There is a huge difference.
I work at EB and we got about 200 copies in. 75 have been siitng on the shelf since launch.

just beat it last night... right after i played thru the first halo (late to the game). i kinda was bummed out how quickly i got thru it, seemed like the first one went on forever while this one was at least a third shorter.
i'd kinda like a corridor free halo where its all open space with vehicles galore.
umm yeah anyways i can see it selling like that, i dont think we'll ever be hearing about a halo 2 landfill in the new mexican desert either ;)

The five-million figure is sold-in (retail), not -through (consumers), as you surmised.

I am sure the numbers sold is right. Think about it people.
If every EB Games (or Game Stop) got 200 copies and sold 125.... World wide , think how many EB Games or Game Stop's are in your area. IMO , I think Halo haters are just trying to find something to gripe about.
Might be retail numbers , but it will sell 5 million to customers real soon if it hasnt allready.

Hell you wanna take about made up numbers, Sony does it all the time for the amount of systems they have sold, when in reality its the amounts shipped not actually sold. It jsut boggles my mind that people have flipped out sold their old systems for not much just so they could buy the same system with a new design (not to mention a new multitap as well). But c'est la vie. And for everyone's info I own all three systems.

That's the easiest way to monitor how many copies of something get sold though. Think about it -- Sony sold it to retailers. It's just a matter of the retailers pushing it through to customers, which will eventually happen through continuing sales, discounts, clearance or something. Regardless of if they are in the hands of consumers or not, they are "sold."
Anyone know how quickly Super Mario Bros. 3 sold at launch? That's still one of only two games I've ever bought at launch...

Just like anything else.
But a game that sells well is good for the industry.

I got mario 3 the day after launch...took us a day to find a store that had any left by the time we got there.
Anyhow, my only complaints about halo 2 are the ending, and that in comparison to halo 1, there are some very bizarre design decisions that overall keep the game from being as good as it should've been (but still pretty damn good). I mean, seriously-was it necessary to not only make the banshee fall apart at the slightest touch, AND remove the mortar bomb, AND make it easily boarded, but to give the ground people homing rockets? The thing's like a flying coffin now.

Ok MS totally bullshit.
Just before Halo 2, there were talks about HALO.
2003 March - Nintendo Announces - WindWaker has more preorderd of total Halo units SOLD, WindWaker had 650000 preorders!!
in 2004 MS said that HALO sold 3 million units since 2001, which seems odd compared to less than 650 000 sold since 2001!
Just 2 weeks later MS says Halo has sold 3.5 UNits.
THen just before Halo 2's Launch
everyone is talking about Halo 2 and MS says Halo Sold 5 million units.
So MS can keep their mouths shut as far as I am concerned.

Thats first 24 hours of sales alone. And this is from MSNBC. They dont kiss MS ass.

With 2.38 million units sold on the first day , I am sure they have sold 5 million by now. I mean come on....... :/

An interesting read, once you comb through the hype present on both sides. Like anything else, I guess.
To be honest, numbers don't really sway me one way or the other. If I ever get an Xbox, I'll get this game, and that's that. It'd be like buying a Gamecube and then not buying any Mario or Zelda games. It'd just make little sense not to after buying the system.

I doubt all stores got that many. The store I work at is a central hub of sorts for our district. We also have tons of the LE version left(30ish?), not included in the 75 remaining.

I completely understand why everyone is going apeshit for the redesigned PS2--it's a sexy mofo of a console. I had three PS2s (debug, modded, consumer) and picked up a Slim-Fast model for no better reason than it's real purty.
As for sell-in versus sell-through, most everyone uses the former, not just Sony. As Dan points out, it's a much easier statistic for companies to track (NPD/TRST data costs so much to reference because it costs a lot to compile), and the sell-ins invariably become sell-throughs (unless it's the GameCube).
