I was playing metroid on the DS at gamestop and the screen was all scratched up. i'm just curious if the stylus pen scratches up the screen or did people just touch the screen with their fingers.

I get alot of small minor scratches, but nothing big really. I wipe them off litely with my t-shirt and it's gone. Nothing big so far.
SOmebody on IGN recommended using a Q tip, he says it plays just as good and cleans your screen. I want to try it, don't have any Qtips though.

I hate the DS screen protectors!!!! I had endless problems getting the thing on the lower, recessed screen. Then there was always at least one large air bubble,so it looked like it had been spattered with smi-transperant crap.
That Qtip idea is genius! My boyfriend is 99% responsable for my DSs scratches, so he gets the Qtip for sure.

this is what happens, when you tell kids to touch something...remember how many times your parents told you "Don't touch anything!" when you walk into a store? Now you know why.... :(

I dont take Qtips with me in public  But yeah, thumbstrap=lameness, at least you can use a Qtip without the hassle of being uncomfortably attached to the system

Run a credit card on the screen as you apply the screen protector to keep air bubbles out. Thats what I did with my PDA. I don't think I'd like to use a screen protector though, it llessened sensitivity pretty bad on my PDA.

The Q-Tip idea was actually Shigeru Miyamoto's.
In an interview someone asked if the screen could get scratched up and Shigeru said "just use a Q-Tip!" LOL
Shiggy is just great isn't he?

I heard it works even better if you use a tampon!

Someone needs to start a website like sidetalking.com, where people are using all sorts of crap for the touch-screen. But I want pictures of them doing it in public. Some guy in a subway car, playing his DS with a tampon in front of horrified onlookers.

Has anyone seen that commercial for the liquid stuff you use on glasses. It's this clear liquid substance that fills the very fine crack of your glasses and you just apply it with a Q-tip. Would it work on the DS?

I have one very very tiny scratch that is barely visible unless you look very closely (on the touch screen). I think it's pretty much inevitable that a screen that you tap and rub a plastic pen against vigoriously playing games will end up with a scratch or two to say the least. And sad to say, screen protectors do not help all that much in this instance. With a normal screen that is never touched yes....but with a touch screen...no. Just play it and have fun. When (if) the screen gets badly scratched to the point you cannot play anymore, send it to Nintendo for replacement.
On another note, I have not heard anyone say anything about really how durable the touch screen is for this machine. I went to a local EB a few days ago and messed around with their display DS just for fun. Man, I have to tell you I have NEVER seen a screen on any portable unit THAT scratched. Must have been done by some people angry about not being able to get a DS. The scratches were so deep and thick, and almost to the point where you could not see the action on the touch screen. But, it STILL played perfectly. The metroid demo was just as perfect and precise as my DS at home. This is a very good sign...

My bottom screen has two tiny scratches from my brother's friend. It still play's perfectly, and are barely viewable, but still bug the obsessive compulsive side of me. Would anyone happen to know of a replacement screen you can install yourself? I know Nintendo offers one for the GBA, as well as the top screen for the DS, but is it even possible for the lower screen? It feels like a thin film on top of the lower screen that almost feels like it can be easily replaced. And would Nintendo charge to replace a screen that has become too scratched?

Umm..no. I just posted previously that my screen has a very tiny scratch. I cleaned it perfectly, and this is indeed a scratch.

What about your nose? (Not after the tampon, of course.) That should remind a few people of that system fate has linked to the DS - the N64. A certain game... LOL

a paper towel is prob not the best thing to clean a screen with....
try a lint free soft cloth or tissue..
some paper towels can be slightly abrasive.

I haven't gotten any scratches yet, and I've rubbed it like crazy, especially on a few of those Feel the Magic games. I'm not even sure how I could accidentally scratch it if it withstood all of that punishment. I guess you should just stop cleaning it with sand paper.

I just tried the Qtip idea and it worked really well! So much for using the stylus. Just have to get over the stupid feeling I get using it. :embarrassed:

Noticed some more scratches here tonight. I guess playing so much Feel The Magic did it. Oh well, I'll just buy another DS in the future and keep it new in the box, and use this one as a beater-upper.
