Super Metroid is great. Excellent gameplay and tons of secrets with great level design. A must have for SNES. Metroid Prime was fun for a little while but it got repetative and boring (in my opinion).

Super Metroid. I haven't had much interest in the series ever since it shifted to 3D.

super metroid, lots of memories and it still holds up. i spent an entire summer playing that game over and over again when i was younger. i was able to beat it under 2 hours 100%, before i knew about gamefaqs.i also like zero mission alot (except that last section), but i've yet to play fusion. the first one's a classic, but i find it a bit hard to play nowadays (at least continuing). i thought prime was ok, i beat it but i wasn't ever that excited about it. those are the only one's i've played.

Super Metroid, hands down
there are few games that i can bring myself to play more than once. i just don't see the appeal of playing a game more than once, especially if i found any part of it frustrating.
Super Metroid isn't too easy, isn't too hard, keeps you guessing a bit, is BEAUTIFUL for an snes game, keeps the gameplay from the NES original and expands upon it without losing touch with it.
CLASSIC is the appropriate word here.

Super Metroid is one of the best games of all time, and Castlevania owes it one hell of a lot.
Super is the pinnacle of the series. It hasn't been duplicated or surpassed yet. Prime PALES in comparison to Super.
None of them really, but if I had a gun held to my head I'd play Prime. The graphics and world were incredible but the gameplay was oftentimes boring as hell and the last form of the end boss was totally pointless and one of the worst of all times.

Super Metroid.
It's the only one I love.
The other Metroids are boring as hell and lack the atmosphere of Super.

Super Metroid, by and far. The original is still good for sentimental reasons, though, and all the rest of the games in the series are also great. But Super... nothing beats that.

I choose Metroid the original, but I have never played Super Metroid. :(

Super Metroid has always been my favorite game of all time. Played through it at least 50 times. However, since Zero Mission came out, I haven't been able to stop playing it. There hasn't been a Metroid game like that since Super. So... I'd have to say it's a tie between Super and Zero. Those 2 are what Metroid is all about.
The worst in the series? Prime 2: Echoes. Wonderful game... I enjoyed every bit of it (except the Dark World. May no one EVER split a Metroid game into a Zelda-like light and dark world again.). However, a Metroid game it's not. I loved the first Prime. Played it through 3 times and the whole experience had that Metroidy atmosphere around every corner of the planet. But Prime 2 failed to recreate that experience. Not once did I ever feel as if I were playing a Metroid game. The dark world was boring and a pain. The areas weren't NEARLY as diverse as other Metroid games. The music was sub-par (except for the underwater area that introduced a remix of an old Super Metroid tune. that was cool.). And worst of all, the story had absolutely nothing to do with the Metroid series. Very disappointing. Let's keep the story within the Metroid universe next time, ok Retro? Great game... HORRIBLE Metroid game.
Long live the 2D Metroids. May we see a new one on the DS in the future.

Well, if you liked the crap that is the original Metroid, you will love Super.

Have you finished Echoes Red Warrior? It definitely fits in the Metroid timeline. And I prefer it to Prime. In fact it's my game of the year so far. I am utterly sucked in with it, playing it up to wee hours trying to figure out the traps and tricks.
Indeed, I was almost tempted to vote for Echoes... but Super is the definitive entry still, even though I didn't get to play it until 2 years ago (I bypassed the Metroid series when younger as it wasn't my sort of genre then!).

Have you finished Echoes Red Warrior? It definitely fits in the Metroid timeline.
Yes I have, and while it does fit in with the Prime storyline... I fail to see how it has anything to do with the Metroid storyline as a whole. Does that make sense? Don't get me wrong, I loved the game, but at the same time, I was disappointed that it didn't contain any cool Metroid story elements. It seemed to create it's own storyline altogether. The Prime storyline seems to be taking on a life of its own... and that's just not what I wanted. I don't want it to feel like a separate series.... I want it to feel like Metroid... much like the original Prime managed to do by including a few familiar characters (namely Ridley), familiar weapons, and a very diverse world. I just wasn't feeling it with Prime 2, and probably won't play it through again as a result.
But then again, I'm probably just too retro for my own good. Nothing stays the same forever. I just hope Prime 3 feels more like Prime 1.

Super Metriod!!
I just loved the ending on this one (err the close to end anyway.. You know what I mean!) . Almost shed a tear... Not only that but it was just huge, and full of places to explore.
Zero Mission (Which was the remake of 1 right?) was just to freaken easy, and short. I passed it the first day I bought it.
All the others (save for Echo's as I have yet to play) where decent, but nowhere as good as Super.
I really stopped being a hardcore Metroid fan with Prime. Sorry, but I would REALLY much rather play it in 2D, or at least a sideview 3D version - 3D Stryder (Arcade version.. Can't remember name) would be an excellent example.

Metroid 2 improved the game engine (if you can call it that) tremendously, and all the 2D ones after that are similar....(better, yeah...but this one was the first to play like the SNES and GBA ones)
I am the only one who voted for it, though. :D

I went for Prime. I just think this game is sublime. After buying Prime 2 Iwent back to the first installment and it still blows me away. There is nothing in this game that I would change - it's pretty much perfect if a little difficult (for me anyway!) and it's the only game that I've wholeheartedly agreed with the magazine hype. I'd follow that with Super Metroid jsut 'cos it's cool! :)

Something about the overall aesthetics of Prime doesn't seem right to me. Don't get me wrong, it's gorgeous, and is really fun to play. But it's lacking something that the earlier Metroids had, and I think that's because it was designed in the U.S.
Metroid Fusion was developed by the same team that did Super Metroid (minus Gunpei Yokoi--R.I.P.) and they instilled the same "magic" into Fusion. I haven't played Zero Mission, but I know that I should.
Oh, if you couldn't tell, Super is my fave.

Quite a few years seperated those two games, I'm sure more than one member of the team changed. If more than a handful of people were there for both games, I'd be surprised.

I voted for super metriod just for it's replay value.
My close 2nd would have to be zero mission, the part after you beat mother brain was different and interesting, plus after I beat it I wanted to play super metriod again! LOL

Super metroid hands down. I absolutely hated Metroid Prime. I played it for a good 3-4 hours and had no fun whatsoever. I hate FPS games, and I was hoping that metroid prime would be the exception, but no.
