Ok, here is where I'm going with this one. When I first got my PS2, the day it came out, I took it home and played it and played it and played it. After a few weeks went by, I realized it actually wasn't that great. My Dreamcast had better games, and better looking games. Bottom line is that I was very dissapointed with my PS2. (remember this was during the first few months of it's existence)
But I found myself convincing myself that I liked my PS2, and that I wasn't really dissapointed. I convinced myself that Madden (PS2) was really better than NFL2K1 (Dreamcast), even though NFL2K1 was actually a much, much better game.
Because I had paid all that money, and spent a night in the rain in front of Target to get it, and I had bought a bunch of launch games and stuff. I basically forced myself to like the PS2.
So the question is, are any of you doing the same thing with the DS? Actually, the question really is, are any of you honest enough to admit that you are forcing yourselves to like the DS, and think it's a really good thing and that you are totally happy with it, while in the back of your mind you are thinking, "why the hell did I spend all this money on this crap!". Then somebody calls and says, "Hey, don't you have a new DS?" "Yes I do, I got one on launch day". "How do you like it?" "I absolutely love it!"
That was me with my PS2 during the first 5 months of the PS2's existence. I had put so much hope and expectations into the PS2, not too mention all the money I spent and everything, that I basically forced myselft to fall in love with it, even though deep down inside, I knew it sucked.
Of course, time went by and eventually the PS2 has turned into a system that doesn't suck at all. But in the first 5 months of the PS2's existence, it was pretty horrible.

Oh God, it's so horrible! But I must force myself to like it.
MUST FORCE MYSELF TO LIKE IT! Even if I die trying.

This is a very real phenomen that happens when people spend money for something. Vice versa, items obtained for free lack that percieved value. I feel like I've seen alot of excuses for the DS's shortcomings from early adopters.

LOL I'm sure a lot of N-Gage owners can relate to your story LOL
Its depressing how when I go on N-Gage forums I see them claiming that its better than the GBA

You ain't seen shit until you've seen this happening on Game.com message boards. Oh the humanity.
I can't say I'm really disappointed with my DS at all. Sure, there aren't many games out for it yet, but the ones I do have are excellent. But I am genuinely disappointed and annoyed by Prime Hunters not being released until May. Heh.

I was disappointed with my PS2 (I waited a while but before a price drop)... But now I give the PS2 a B.
My Dreamcast was fun (got one a month or two after launch), but there was quite a wait for more new games... But now I give the Dreamcast an A.
So far, I give the DS a B. Mostly I've been playing Super Mario DS, but I plan to get back to feeling the magic soon. I alos think the Metroid demo is pretty cool. I dunno know about the other titles though. I was looking forward to Ridge Racer but it sounds like not enough new stuff was added. Maybe Tiger Woods or Rayman will be good...

It's kind of like asking whether or not you "like your tv" if you only 2 or 3 channels are available for you at the moment.

You weren't dissapointed with the console.. you were disspointed in the game library. You may think your PS2 has turned into a system that "doesn't suck", but the fact is, it's still the same damn ps2 you bought at launch ;)
Rather you should be saying, "Are you forcing yourself to like the current DS GAME LIBRARY?". Which of course in my opinion is sort of premature.. I mean we're all of 2 weeks in the launch! LOL You got more fingers than there are games for it :P

Now is the time to have a complete DS collection. It is very much within reach and braggin' rights are priceless... LOL
In comparison, I did try to tell myself I liked the GBA, but then one day I just thought, "I don't like that f@cking thing!".. It wasn't the games, it was the poor visibility and the d-pad which I didn't like...
At this point, I feel there is way too little software available for the DS to make a call on it...

LOL I was thinking the same thing. I was going to start a new topic on just that. "How complete is your DS collection?" Please include homebrew and prototype games.
I just sent 30 proof of purchases to Meow Mix for my copy of Tickle the Kitty DS. I hear that they only produced 500 copies and the cart is light blue! Just think of the possibilities this item will have on ebay in 20 years. ;)

I must say that I was prepared to feel this way about the DS. but each new game I get I am pleasantly suprised. I spent weeks before launch poo pooing the stylus as a gimmick, but so far I haven't felt cheated. Feel the Magic is good( although seems a little over rated), Mr. Driller is loads of fun, and SMDS has taken up most of my playing time. I can wait for the better games.

Sorry for the confusion. Perhaps if you are not a collector of old consoles and cartridges you wouldn't understand. I was making a reference to the Atari 2600 cartridge Chase the Chuck Wagon (http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html?SoftwareLabelID=76). This overated "rare" cart was obtained by sending Ralston-Purina proof of purchases and some cash through the mail thus making it harder to get if it had been sold in retail shops.

I had the same feelings after getting a PS2. I spent the first 3 months (or more, cant remember) playing mostly PS1 games so it really did feel like a waste. I couldnt believe I dropped so much money on it. But after a while it didnt matter, I would've gotten one eventually. Now I have about 50 PS2 games and it's brought be nothing but gaming goodness, I certainly dont regret buying it now.
It will be the same with the DS. It's had a very "light" launch for it just like the PS2. I definitely could've waited and got a DS next year and I wouldnt really be missing out on anything but let's face it, some of us just have to have it RIGHT AWAY. Eventually you'll have a good collection of games for the DS and it wont matter anymore.

I'm currently forcing myself to enjoy Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits. I didn't drop $30 to let it sit there on the shelf.
It has it's moments (I love the Time Attack mode), but overall, It's really just another average puzzle game to me (and perhaps more irritating than your standard puzzle game).
Maybe, just maybe, that's because I've never played a Mr. Driller game before, but they've all come highly recommended. I can see why it would be enjoyable to many - hopefully it will continue to grow on me.
As far as the DS itself goes, I don't feel like I'm forcing myself to like it. It's been an enjoyable experience thus far, and I'm happy with it. I am patiently waiting however for the games that I am really interested in (WarioWare, Advance Wars, etc.), at which point I will totally geek out. So far, it's been fun, but I also knew when I bought it that it would be after the beginning of the year before things started to pick up.

You'll have to play it enough to get pretty good at it (i.e. clearing the 300m or 500m stages in one life). That's when it really starts to get interesting. So don't give up, and it'll probably start becoming more amusing and addicting. It's just too bad they left Drill Stone mode out of the US release. The version of it in Mr. Driller Ace is really cool.

It seems to me to be a game along the lines of Gradius or Ikaruga or whatever: I get irritated because I can only make it so far, so I turn it off. Then I turn it back on five minutes later and try it again. It's definitely got some charm - like I said, I can see why it's gathered the following that it has. I'm up to levels H and I on Time Attack, and about the 4th level of mission mode (1000m?). I tried Pressure Driller or whatever, but I didn't really enjoy it.
Anyway, thanks - some of your posts about it are part of the reason I picked it up in the first place.

Yeah, save Pressure Driller mode for when you get good at speed drilling, because it doesn't really become frantic until the last couple of stages or so.

DS is fun, sure I would have loved a more stylish design with a cool lightweight brushed metal case... as for the technology I am ok so far, I expect some good use of the touchscreen (a la Feel the Magic, Wario Ware) with strategy games and puzzles but appart from that I am happy that I got it.
The DS is the first console I got on release since the Atari Jaguar and Jag CD, that's how thrilled I was !!!

Let's just hope for Nintendo's sake that your choice of consoles to buy on release date is not linked to their overall success.
Anyway, I'm not that hot on the newer portable systems these days - mainly because I seem to be too old for the small screen size. I tend to avoid playing my GBA/SP much (except when in airports) due to the tiny low-contrast screen. I've checked out the DS, and it's screens look a little better - but not enough for me to play the thing regularly.
What's this have to do with the thread? The GBA's one system I had to "force" myself to like after shelling out the $99. The DS might be the same way if I buy one. Maybe I'll get a better look at the screens once the excitement has worn off after the holidays and I don't have to fight off crowds of kids to get a look at a DS.

That's funny. You know, maybe you and me are very similar in our feelings on portables. So far, I just haven't been able to really get into any of them, primarily because of the size of the screen, in addition to the brightness and contrast of the screen.
I've heard that the DS screen is much better, but I'm not so sure. I saw one at a GameCrazy, and it didn't look that great, but maybe it was because of the lighting in the store.
That's the thing about portables, where can you actually try one out and hold it in your own hands and walk around with it for a couple seconds to see if you like it?
But I digress. I just wanted to say that I agree with your take on the screens on the portables.
I'm think that the PSP might be the first portable gaming system with a screen that I can deal with. However, I'm worried about the price. I think the price is going to be $199.99 right?
I'm not sure if the screen can be that great at that price point. It's a large screen. I wonder how much contrast and brightness it's really gonna have? Normally, if it were to have a really bright screen, like some of the more top of the line PDA's, then it would have to cost alot more. The cost of the screen itself would be quite alot, not to mention any of the included technology and all of that.

This happened to me once back in the 16-bit computer era. My buddy had an Amiga 500, and because I didn't want to be just like him I purchased Atari's rival system, the Atari 520 ST. I was always trying to convince myself that it was better than his Amiga. The graphics were almost as good, but the sound just sucked, while the Amiga's sounds was just awesome (and still is today). I was telling everyone else it was awesome, and deep down I just wanted my money back. I finally gave up on thinking my computer "was so much better" because it really wasn't....and I eventually got rid of the ST purchased an Amiga 500. So, I kind of know what you are talking about.
As for the DS however, I'm not thinking that at all. I only have three games for the system, and I pretty much enjoy them all at this point. And the controls to me are quite innovative...I love the touch screen control. I have no complains thus far, and truly do think it was money well spent!

Huh? So you don't even have one? Then why the heck are you asking the original question "Do you find your forcing yourself to like the DS?"... when it's something you can't even answer yourself in any way?
the question really is, are any of you honest enough to admit that you are forcing yourselves to like the DS, and think it's a really good thing and that you are totally happy with it, while in the back of your mind you are thinking, "why the hell did I spend all this money on this crap!".
Since you can't even contribute to your own friggin question, all of a sudden I now realize what it is... grade B trolling

Well, from what I am gathering, he has already had an experience like this with the PS2, and is asking if DS owners have this particular feeling. In other words, he really wants to give the DS a go, but doesn't want to feel burned like he did when he originally purchased the PS2....or something like that.

No. I'm holding off on buying the DS until I "do" like it. I actually like it by default, as it plays games and games are cool - but that doesn't sell me on systems any more
