Actually there are some handhelds with a region lock - for example Turbo Express / PC Engine GT

Problem is, GBA games are about 10 dollars cheaper msrp in America, so unless you feel like shelling out the dough (plus whatever the importer takes off the top) for superior box art, it really ain't all that great.

Even that's debatable, as there is no true "region lock" on it--it's solely based on card size.

And I wouldn't say that all handhelds don't have region protection, but most of them do.

That's why I only import titles that I can't get in america from either europe or japan for example Kuru Kuru Kururin and Kururin Paradise, that Domo-kun game (exact japanese name escapes me), The Premier Manager series (I wish someone would take this game make it into a football, baseball or basketball mgmt game), Darius R, Elevator Action Old and New, the european port of Comix Zone and many more that I can't think of off the top of my head.

Nomad too, in a way (suppose you could count the Mega Jet in that case), but I honestly can't think of any others right now...Lynx?

The difference in Japan and the US is that most game stores traditinoally either sell under the MSRP by 500 yen or so (taking the price to 4300 yen) or at a minimum giving you about that much in points. Sometimes both. I've not been in the states long, but it seems when games are released, it's MSRP and nothing but.

Points? Please define this 'points' concept for those of us not lucky enough to have gone to Japan. ;)

I'm guessing its something like what they have at the Sukaru Japan resteraunt shop thing. For every purchase you get a certain ammount of points which are redeemable for stuff when you have enough.

Basically. At Yodobashi, the only place I really shopped at, you had a card that would get usually 10% of what you paid back in points, which you could redeem like cash later on.

So, if you got a 2500 yen game, that's 250 points. Which you can basically use at the store as if it were 250 yen. It can definitely add up after awhile, I used it mostly to get free batteries though.

One cool thing is, you can buy a PC or a big TV, and basically get enough to get a free PS2 or better. I tried to get my dad when he visited Japan to buy a $1,000+ camera from Yodobashi so I could get the points, but no dice.
