I've got this one, and I'd say that it's worthwile picking up if you've not been spoiled by modern RPG combat systems. The story's pretty good, the music's nice as well, but the battles are quite dull.
If you can stand the frequent "whack-a-mole" combat, it's a worthy purchase - especially at the prices it seems to be going for on Ebay these days.
Edit: if you're spoiled by Grandia's combat system, Vay's battles will put you to sleep. :)

Vay was a decent game. I enjoyed it, but it's defentily part of the 'old school' class of RPG's. Some nice gameplay, but I never finished it due to losing my saves.

Just another basic RPG with a hero wearing a cape, a headband and has a wooden sword.
I read about Vay being in the works and was excited since it was a Working Designs game. That and worthwhile Sega CD releases were more sparse than chin hairs on a 6 year old girl. I buy it on release day and was really disappointed. It doesn't even come close to the fun of Lunar. If I was a Sega CD collector/player, I would get it again for sentimental value, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
To sum it up: It ain't no Lunar.

I've played through it twice, though it has been about 7 years since I last played it! I remember enjoying it. It certainly isn't as good as Lunar, but most Lunar fans would probably get enjoyment out of it. It's definitely worth playing through at least once in your life anyways.

Look at the bright side, though. At least it isn't Cosmic Fantasy 2. *shudder*
Given that the game can be had for ten bucks or less, it's not too bad if you're into the old stuff - or you just want to have more stuff to put into your XEye/SegaCD/Laseractive.

Hey I liked cosmic fantasy 2, it was funny. althought the story was pretty straight forward. Anyway Vay is descent, but ya LUner is much better. Vay though isn't terribly expensive and I think is worth its price.

I'll second that, the combat bore me to tears. Eaily one of my most disliked RPG.

I just played thru Vay earlier this year. Wasn't too impressed but I'm not a fan of RPG's anyway.
I do remember it had some strange humor though. There was this part early on where you had to get this fairy to stop farting so she could help you. Seriously. Think she was called the "Fairy Of Eternal Flatulence" or something.

This is the same experience I had with the game. Major letdown.

I wouldn't really consider it any worse than Lunar. They both have pretty dull, repetitive battles. The only difference is that Lunar is significantly longer and has a much more detailed plot. And Lunar has Noriyuki Iwadare music, which would be the biggest reason for me to like Lunar more than Vay. :P

also, vay is pretty hard if you're not leveled up enough, lol. it's definitely "old school" visuals, and if you pick it up after playing lunar or pretty much any next-gen rpg, you may be disappointes, but overall it's a decent plot and the game offers up some neat plot twists along with the usual predictable stuff. i sort of wish WD would have chosen something like arcus I-II-III or death bringer to port over instead, though... LOL

I never did ask Victor why he picked up Vay. I've gotta assume that, like Vanguard Bandits, it was so cheap to grab the rights that he couldn't say no.

I played Vay last summer and liked it. To mee, it seemed like the missing link between Phantasy star and Lunar.

There's a secret sword that can find at the very beginning of the game that kills the difficulty. :P

I got it with my Sega CD off eBay, it was sadly disc only. But I loaded it up and did like what I played. Especially the cool cartoony anime looking scenes and the save anywhere feature.
But it's not enough to make me keep my Genesis and SCD hooked up all the time. Sadly. Of course, I'm not a big RPG person. So I couldn't get into it. Same as when I played FF V on the PSX, I couldn't stay into it even though I got really far. Oh well. The only RPG I ever beat was Super Mario on an Emulator (Quick Freeze and Defrost), and I got all the way to the DragonLord in Dragon Warrior on the NES. And on Mario and Luigi, I am up to the first timed Koopa Kid. Whose bright fucking idea was it to be TIMED? Fucking hell. So it sits in limbo until I can get around to levelling up to finally take on the final boss. Also, never played Paper Mario and haven't gotten 2 yet.

Bah I really enjoyed the game. It's probably my favorite for the system. It was hard and very straight forward but I liked the characters and thought the cut scenes were well done for the time. I also love the opening music. Which is weird cause I normally don't notice something like that, but I usually let the intro to Vay roll 3 or 4 times before hitting any buttons just so I can hear it.
