Man, you can find pirates all over the place! Check eBay -- it's crawling with them! Make sure to mod your console appropriately before buying any, however.

(I'm sorry, I just had to.)

Well with Google I just found dozens of place to download it, particularly the Genesis and NES versions. Or you could get the C64 version. OR, you could go buy the newly released version for the PC.

The deluxe version or whatever of the new one for PC includes the original with it when you purchase it.

Correction -- the new version of Pirates! has Pirates GOLD, NOT the original Pirates, as a bonus with the DVD Limited Edition.

If you want the original Pirates, I STRONGLY suggest the NES version. It's the best port of the game made. I'm sure you can find the ROM to download and play on a emulator. ;)

If you're gung ho about the computer version, the Commodore 64 is probaly the best one. Do a search on Google for it. I've seen it in some C64 sites.

I prefer the Amiga version of Pirates!, as the graphics and sound are far superior to those of the C64, PC, and NES versions. It even looks better than the Genesis Pirates! Gold, in my opinion (I found that game to be overly cartoony).

Wow, really?

I have fond memories of the game on the C64. Played weeks and weeks of the game back in the day. I dabbled a bit with the NES version years later but it didn't seem to have the same "pop". What am I missing? What makes the game better than the C64 version? Should I give it a second chance?

Don't forget, whatever version you download isn't going to come with a map, which you'll kind of need if you want to rule the seas.

I grew up with the C64 version too. Time to go dig out that code wheel ...

I have a nice JPG of the NES map somewhere. I don't need it though... I have that baby memorized still. I'm, pretty sure I'd still recognize some of the treasure maps even.

Admittedly, I have not played the C64 version, but I have played Pirates! on the NES and an old Apple, as well as Pirates! Gold on PC and Genesis. My favorite version out of all of these happens to be the NES version. The graphics are weak compared to the other versions I've played, but I always thought that the play control in the NES version was the best by far. Swordfighting on the computer and Genesis versions of the game just seemed awkward.....not so on the NES.

Is there any difference in the game/story between Pirates for the nes and Pirates Gold for the Genesis? I have Pirates Gold so I never bothered to pick up the Nes version.

I've never seen either the NES or GENESIS versios 'in the wild'. I own neither, though I'd pick them up if I saw them. Likewise, I've only seen 'Magician' ONCE (ever!) in the wild, and I didn't pick it up because the label was torn. Otherwise I would have. :(

Pirates Gold is really just a updated version of Pirates. It has better graphics and music, some easier controls, and a few new things.

I admit I've never played the Amiga version of Pirates.

Here is how I would rank the games in order from best down:

1) The new version of Pirates! on DVD for the PC
2) Pirates Gold for the Genesis
3) Pirates for the NES
4) Pirates Gold for Windows 3.11
5) Pirates for the C64

What did I prefer about the NES version, Joe? Well, the controls were easier for one. The graphics were a little better and the gameplay was a little faster. Saving was a lot easier. I also just found it easier to pop in a game into my NES and start playing them having to load up a computer, wait for the game to load, etc.
