Ok, here is what I'm talking about. Is there some retail chain, that would actually allow you to hold a DS, and walk around with it, and try it out for a couple of minutes?

I saw one of these things at GameCrazy, but it's locked into that contraption, and the screen is all dirty from kids rubbing their dirty fingers all over it, and the lighting from the flourescent lighting probably isn't very flattering.

I just want to go somewhere, and say, "Can I check out a Nintendo DS?" "Can I hold one in my actual hands and really check out the screen and see if I like it ?"

But I don't think there is any place like that. I wish some high end audio/video chain would carry it, then I could go there and probably try one out that hasn't been thrashed, and I can test it in decent lighting and stuff.

Can you rent this thing at Blockbuster or Hollywood Video?

I don't think you are going to be able to do this anywhere right now. Everywhere I have been it is locked into the same contraption you speak of. The only way you are really going to be able to do this is to buy it (if you can find it right now), play it, and if you don't like it go and return it.

The display, um, contraptions... are very really crappily designed. I wont go neer them, but then again i already have my Ds :-P I suggest looking at each display you come accross, or go out of your way to find them if you want to, and find one that isnt all finger printed up. Their out there, Ive seen em.Th

You could always buy one, play it for awhile, and then return and say it was defective :P

You guys are lucky. I have been to around 10 stores in the atlanta area and all the DS's on display are dead. I have asked a few stores and why they were turned off and was told that the units did not work. At the big chains like target and TRU they did not know why the units were turned off. I cannot beleive that all the displays are dead, so I am starting to wonder if they are turned off for a reason. I am guessing that you really cannot get a good feel for the DS when it is chained up to a shelf without the stylus. The only thing is, there is no way I would buy one with out seeing one in action. And a little part of me wonders if all the display units are dead because of abuse. Any thoughts?

There is one good reason why thy do not allow this "theft", the other week I was at a TRU and I asked the clerk if they had a DS to check out. He told me that they allowed a lady to look over the unit before deciding to purchase. This was during the Christmas hustle and bustle, she vanished never to be seen again, with the DS of course.
