View Full Version : Best Signal for playing NES Games?

I have three options:

Toploader using RF (obviously the worst)
Toaster using A/V
Super 8 using S-Video(?)

I'm unsure about the Super 8, though. I figure at best I'll get an A/V signal. But, getting an A/V signal without the toaster hassle seems the best solution.

What do you guys think?

I perfer the AV Toaster...but the Super 8 sounds like a winner

I hear the Super 8 has the same vert line problem as the toploader. Your best bet is a toaster for the best signal. Unless, of course, you can rig a Playchoice 10 to accept regular sized carts. It has RGB ;)

I've never heard of a conversion being possible though....but I'm sure it is.

By the way, the NES can not be modified for RGB...it is not possible.

Technically the best is 1080i HD through component inputs using an modded Xbox, SMB looks so clear it's eerie.
I've never used a Super 8, so I don't know how well the video conversion to S is. The best I've ever seen a normal NES is though regular RCA composite AV.

There's a standard "vertical line problem?"

Here I was thinking I was alone.

My top-loader definitely shows some faint vertical lines.

Is there any remedy at all to this?

An AV mod exists, there's gotta be at least 1 topic in the tech/restoration forum about that. That's the only fix. Or buy an AV Famicom, heh.

Is that even possible?

Toaster NES through composite kicks my modded Xboxes NES emulated ass in component.

Emulated looks (and is) filtered. The sounds are close, but not exactly right. Movement is not the same. It's emulated. Emulated well even. But it is a copy, not exactly the same as the original.

I have both, and have compared on the same TV. Emulation is great. The real thing is better.

RF does indeed suck. Get a fixed toaster. 8-)

I don't think an AV modded Toploader eliminates the vertical line problem. An AV famicom is a better solution if you are unable/unwilling to find a working toaster nes.

Why the Bat Signal of course. LOL

I'm sorry, it's been a long, bad week. :texaschain:

This guy is right on the money. He must have read one of my posts about emulation on the XBOX in High Def

No question about it. The best video signal that I've ever seen for NES games is a XBOX, modded with the NES emualtor, set to 1080i, Xbox Tri-Linear Filtering and SuperScale2X mode activated.

Try playing the first Contra game on it, and be freaking totally amazed by the picture quality. It's the best picture I've ever seen for any NES games.

Yes, it's a emulator, but just get a PS2 retrocon controller, and get the PS2 to XBOX controller adapter and it's all gravy.

Of course RCA is better than RF for anything, but in my experience at least, it did not make much difference for the NES, because it is monaural in the first place and the graphics are simple enough to not suffer much though RF.

But then you don't get the freaking awesome clarity.
