Isn't that the game that inspired or was a prequel to Vanguard Bandits?

No, it's not. It's not even related to Vanguard Bandits.

As for the gameplay for Vasteel...it's neat. It's basically a hex based strategy game with two mech armies fighting. The really neat thing is that when two units meet, instead of doing a cinematic like Military Madness, you actually have to fight it out and beat down the enemy units. Means that if you're good and have good strategy, you have a fighting chance even with bad or weak units. Plus, it makes the game way more interesting than the average strategy game. It's a good design, the battles are fun, and you even infiltrate and destroy robotic bases.

However, the turns take a while and each level takes HOURS. It's a big game...very long. You can't just pick up and play for a few minutes. It has a save function, but the Duo's memory is so small that you can literally only save ONE savegame on it...and I mean one single save not a save with multiple slots. And you'll have to delete most of the memory to fit that one save in. It's got brutally huge saves as Duo games go. IMO if you're at all into strategy, it's one hell of a game. Story isn't half bad either! :D

Well, it's related to Vanguard Bandits a LITTLE -- both were made by the same company, the now defunct Human, both are strategy/tactics games and both were translated by Working Designs.

Yeah, I guess, but if you've played both, you know that the games themselves have no apparent relation.

Hmm, I'll have to investigate Vasteel. I've got Cosmic Fantasy 2, which pretty much makes me want to puke (repetitive and huge saves...you have to totally clear your memory to save one game) so I wondered if Working Designs were more prone to having a few misses during the Turbo years (Cadash...? It's okay, but not fantastic). This renews my faith a bit.

I hated Cosmic Fantasy 2 as well. It's awful. Cadash was decent, but I do recommend Vasteel. Still has the painfully huge saves tho. The only WD Turbo games I really liked were Vasteel, Exile, and Exile: Wicked Phenomenon.

Yeah, I've got Exile Wicked Phenomenon, too. It's great, but I get really stuck early in the game. There's a tower with a grim-reaper boss at the end that just thwomps the crap out of me, and I can't level up enough to take this thing on.

Whine whine whine...sorry I'm derailing the thread, but it's a tough game! I love it anyway, though. That's my favorite type of genre; the action-RPG.

Yeah, the difficulty in that game is artificially ramped up....they made it too difficult by accident. Too bad really, as it's unrealistic difficulty is the only thing that it has against it.
