View Full Version : Was Turok Evolution even remotely good?

Yesterday, we got a box in our store full of 63 copies of Turok Evolution. All brand new. For all three systems. All priced at $4.99.

Now, $5 is a nice price, but well, is Turok Evolution even worth that? The first was the last one I enjoyed. I hated 2 and never tried 3... was there a 3? I forget. So, well, is it worth it?

Funny, I thought of buying them all and reselling on eBay, but they aren't even going for much more than $5 anyway, so scratch that. But hell, if it's even a little fun I'll buy it.

(I had this thought that maybe someone bought a ton of these from Acclaim's auction for cheap and has decided to unload them at $5 each. Would make sense. Where else would they come from?)

Comments?

It was only remotely good in its level of badness. Characters were horrible (final boss was the worst character design ever). It was touted as a great shooter. It wasnt.

There was a Turok 1-3 as well as Rage Wars (multiplayer game) on N64.

I loved Rage Wars and picked up Evolution based on my experiences with Turok 2 and Rage Wars.

I've played it a little bit. It seems to be solid, but I HATE the control options -- also probably why I greatly dislike Halo. I wish I had an N64-ish controller to play it with.

For $5.00 new, I'd say pick it up. The worst you could do is get a $5.00 game you don't care for. Considering how much I've paid for a few collection pieces that are games that I despise (*cough* Jaguar Aircars *cough*), $5.00 for a game that I'm interested in sounds worth it to me.

Ironically, that is how much I paid for mine at Circuit City not too long ago, even though I knew I'd probably have the controller issue.

Reselling them is about as good an idea as a hat knitted from pubic hair. We still get them in at CC from time to time and they've been $5 for months and months and months. Haven't actually played it, so you're on your own for decision time. General consensus is that it sucked ass.

I loved it.

Huge environments, the usual assortment of cool weapons of destruction and an A.I. that keeps on coming. The graphics are Turok, totally up to date with the system that they're on.

Be forewarned! DON'T buy it on the XboX......DON'T buy it on the PS2. These are portovers that didn't work out. You have to buy it on the Cube, which is the system that it was developed for. It's leagues ahead of the other two versions in every aspect. The Cube version has SEVEN additional modes of play that the other two systems didn't get.

NTHGHTDGDCRTDTRK..... LOL ....I loved that clever code. I'll never forget it.

I remember a hilarious review for Turok: Evolution that I saw in some game magazine. They HATED it. Said some of the characters looked like they'd been done on an N64, and then they showed some pictures. They were right! One guy had sticks for arms with a square for a hand (and lines for fingers) with a staff pasted on. He wasn't even holding it.

The main boss is some confederate soldier/robot mishmash with a name like Colonel Sanders or something silly like that.

Game Rankings website shows and average of 67% or so across the three platforms.

Cheers

The first turok was good for the start of n64 games... But then the sequels sucked.

Never played the single player. The battle mode is so so. But it has the coolest gun of any game....the FLECHETTE MINIGUN. Its the greatest thing in the world to turn a corner, warm that joker up (takes a second), and lay waste to everyone with a tidal wave of flechettes! Any battlemode with poison arrows, flechettes, and an axe deserves a little play time in my book. The graphics are pretty bad for GCN though, the jungle area looks bad. Its kinda hard to see people at long distances too. Stick with 007:Agent Under Fire after you've had your fun with the neat guns.

If you don't already own it though, just pass it over.

The first turok was good for the start of n64 games... But then the sequels sucked.

The first game WAS good, especially for its time. I just played it recently. I remember playing it when it first came out and looking up and seeing the "lens flare" and being just shocked at how cool it was. Some Jaguar game does that too (maybe Missile Command?) but it's phoney lens flare, not the cool shiznit from the N64. Turok 1 still plays pretty good, but the fog is RIDICULOUS. Seriously, truly obsurd. But still cool for the era.

Turok 2 was and is one of the best-looking games for the N64... too bad it gets so choppy and you can play for over an hour without hitting a save point. I think it would have been great were it not for the choppiness and difficulty.

Turok 3 is pretty darned good in my opinion, and woefully underrrated. As the last Turok game on a dying console, Turok 3 was ignored by most gamers. I loved it. Less choppy (though less impressive) graphics and saving your game was much easier.

Turok: Rage Wars smells like my work boots. Icky.

Cheers

I'll just be nice a say that there's a reason why they're $5.00 ;)

It's a quite nice game as long as you're not playing in multiplayer mode.

I liked it alot when it was released. My rate is 6.5 out of 10.

A friend of mine bought this for the Cube against my warnings. Big f'in mistake. We only managed to play for about 15 minutes before we decided we couldn't take it anymore. The game was just awful. The terrible graphics and A.I. were immediately obvious. But the worst thing about it was the load times. You know how some games will show the games logo and a loading bar when you first start because it has to do a really long load? Well imagine have to sit through that EVERY TIME YOU GO TO A DIFFERENT AREA. I swear it seemed like 10-15 seconds between each "room." It was just unbelievablly bad.

Ah, yes, this was the game for which Acclaim thought it would be clever to do an ad campaign on Forumplanet featuring various bleeding facial orifices, apart from the guy who was going to set the world record for waiting in line up to the game's release date. 'Nuff said.

(I do recall Gamespy's reviewer being disappointed that you don't actually get to shoot dinosaurs anymore.)

Glad to hear the Cube version is the best as that was the one I was planning on getting if I decided to. So I guess I will. What can I lose? Just wish they had ported the original before they went under. The original was the most fun ever.

The original was actually ported to the PC. (I think it's even up for download at Underdogs.)

Were any of the Turok's good? They have all been reaaly boring and pointless to me. Turok 2 I played a lot but it still wasn't good; it was a very glitchy game.

I paid $10 for the PS2 version and still felt ripped off. The game alternated between boredom and outright fustration.
