View Full Version : Quick question about Halo 2

Does anyone know exactly how 'rare' the Collector's Edition is?
I'm just wondering how many copies were produced nationwide and whether or not the Collector's Edition can still be found in stores in certain areas.

I'm not sure anyone will have a definitive answer for this, because everywhere just says it's a "limited edition" with no actual production numbers behind it.
Two things have me thinking it's not rare, nor will it ever be:
1) Halo 2 reportedly sold 5 million units. If even 10% of those were limited edition that's 500,000 - way more than anything that's ever been considered rare before. And I'm guessing on the low side.
2) There are over 300 of these "limited edition" units on eBay:

I got one simply because I wanted the whole package, but never considered that this would be a future rarity (actually I never consider that when buying current-gen games). I've been wrong before though, perhaps someone else has an opposing theory.

The collectors editions are OOP (Out Of Print) but there are still units floating around (all be it not many that ive seen in my travels).
When they announced the CE, that was when I went in and pre-ordered Halo 2. Talking with people in the stores at that time, according to GameStop everyone that had preordered before then had to be considered for it (since they didnt know the edition was being released) so the stores were going to get enough units to cover those pre-orders as well. I know thats not exactly how it played out 7 months later when the game finally came out, but i'm sure a fair number of people switched their pre-order over or demanded and got the CE over the regular edition had they been living under a rock all that time.
Otherwise I think that Joe's pretty on in his assestment and with an X factor of who knows how many produced units its probably only going to pull just a little above normal for the game. However give it a few years and getting ahold of sealed ones becomes an issue for collectors and expect those to garnish some value.

Well, I'm going out on a limb to say that it will definitely be more than a few years before it gains any value and then...will it have been a worthwhile investment? Probably not, unless you can get it for $35 (this seems to be possible, or very nearly so, even on eBay).
The response to the game hasn't been entirely positive, after all; lots of folks will be dumping (or already have dumped) their regular copies on eBay and I don't see how that bodes well for it. What's more, there are 246 matches for "metroid prime" (any version) under "Games" on eBay, but a full 292 matches for "Halo Collector's Edition" under "Games." That's a full six pages, going on seven.
Still, by all means keep ahold of your copies :P
As a side note, the tin box release of Quake III Arena seems to be rather uncommon and while there've been at least two sellers offering the game at decent (for a PC game) prices of $15+, nobody has taken it up. Oh, how being a console game changes your future value!

Whoa. 1.5 million "limited" Collector's Editions sold in the US alone?
Fuck. Being a collector certainly has become mainstream, hasn't it.

Did they ever actually SAY that the Halo 2 Collector's Edition would be 'limited'? It would normaly just imply that it has some extras included with the game itself.
Even though it's a large production number, don't forget.......many of those limited edition copies will have been bought for "regular gamers" as Christmas gifts. It won't take two weeks before most of them are destroyed by fingerprints, scratches and scuffs, rendering them worth about $20 trade-in. Just because something says limited edition, don't assume that they'll all be locked in a sterile vault.

I reckon it'll be worth money if it still has it's plastic sleeve, and if the tin isn't all dented. Not much money, but still, more then the standard halo 2.
Can't forget "Conversations with the Universe" book, either.

Yeah, they actually did. It was in various press releases as such and it says right on the tin itself "LIMITED Collector's Edition".
"Limited", my backside!

By definition, it IS limited. It's just not limited as low as you'd like it, apparently.

I bought the Collector's Edition to play..but I treat it like a Collector's item..
I handle the box gently, keep it in the sleeve..(real carefull with the discs.
I usually sell or give away the Xbox live card that comes in some of these games now.
This card however has Master Chief on it so it's being left in the case..I'm not using it etc.
If this was to become(if) a Collector's item..and that card was missing would it be incomplete..(?)

In fact Halo 2 in general has so far been limited to something like 5 million copies.
Nothing is unlimited, so everything COULD be called limited.

My goodness.... :eek 2:
I guess it is 'limited' in the sense that it has the metal case, plastic sleeve and the 2nd disc, but Joe is right. "Collector's Editions" sure have gone mainstream.
I wonder if some of the other 'Collector's Edition' games out there will eventually be worth more than they were originally retailed for.

Don't forget the Covenant perspective manual, which is different from the normal edition's.

Are you serious? I was wondering why that instruction booklet was based on the Covenant's POV.
Damn.... Now I have to go out and try to snag the standard instruction booklet for what I'm assuming will be the UNSC version of it.
