View Full Version : So WHAT IS the deal with Suikoden II?..

I finally got Suikoden for the PSX at a really good price; so I guess now it's time to set my sight on bigger and better. Of course.. I've always known that Suikoden II fetches a much higher price on eBay than it's predecessor, but I'm not really sure why.. so I thought I'd ask some of the experts.

What's the deal with this title?.. seriously? I mean.. it can't be really all THAT rare (considering the number you see for auction on eBay at any given time). Was it really released in "limited" numbers? If so.. anyone know how many? When did this kind of "supply & demand" scenario start with it? I know that some members occasionally luck out and snatch it up with BINs at outrageously lower prices.. so really.. what's the deal?

I can't think of a domestic PSX title that regularly goes for 100+ dollars (except maybe Valkyrie Profile) unless it's a sealed copy of something; but for me personally.. if I were going to spend over a hundred bucks on a game.. I'd much rather have a copy of Radiant Silvergun or Panzer Dragoon Saga.. or..

I was under the impression that the import save feature in Suikoden III had something to do with it. Although it doesn't seem like that critical of a feature. Interestingly, Suikoden IV doesn't have this feature.

I also think that this is just one of those hyped up games. Some people say it is a great game, yet I often read reviews and posts that it isn't really that good after all. There are also many mentions of it having some of the worst localization.

I own the game and, yes, I bought it from Ebay at a premium (used, but mint). It is by far the most expensive video game I have ever owned. I coughed up the dough for a few reasons. I had Suikoden 1 and 3 and I wanted to complete the series. Also, I have no doubt that there will never be a re-release of this game, so the value will only go up. There was nothing to lose.

I honestly haven't even played any of the Suikoden games yet. :) I bought them during my PlayStation buying frenzy and have been busy playing other games. They will have to at least wait until I finish Final Fantasy Tactics.

Wow, I just checked the current prices on Ebay. Quite a bit higher than what I paid about 6 months ago. I dunno if it is the xmas madness or just the natural inflation due to age. It's even possible that the low US dollar is inflating prices, I guess.

I actually really enjoyed Suikoden. Albeit if it was a little too easy...

Suikoden II probably fetches a higher price as it is the link stone in the series... Plus the visuals were updated, and the whole game is just oozing with greatness!

Trust me, you have to play it to realise...!

And yeah, I reckon the dollar is making it look unnaturally high - Must me mostly UK people buying them, or just desperate people wanting to play it...

Take a look at how much the PAL one goes for on the UK eBay...

It was released at the time when hype on the PS2 was starting to trickle down, so copies are limited. It's a great game so everyone wants it. It's the middle child of a three part series, with 1 and 3 being fairly common, so collectors will shell out more money to complete the set. Plus, it will never be re-released so that drives the price up.

PS2??? Huh?

And I think you'll find it's a four part series...

It had better visuals than the first, let's put it that way. And being a Konami game, it was limited. Same with the first game, although that was technically the PS1's first true RPG, so they were taking a huge leap with that.

OK.. I'll buy all that. Thanks for the info guys. The only thing that still puzzles me is how "limited" was it's released (cold.. hard numbers would be great) since I see it all over on eBay (almost as many listed as Suikoden I's at any given time).

I guess it's time to start saving again. LOL

I bought Suikoden II new and love it. AWSOME RPG but also has the strategy battles in it that 1 and 3 have. Yes, the translation is a little poor but it's not the worse one I've seen, and the game has some very good artwork, wonderfull music, and one of the damn hardest bosses I've ever fought.

It broke my heart to have to sell the game and book last year for money, but I sold them to DP members for $70 for the game and $60 for the book.

And Valkrie Profile? I got the game used at a local EB for $35. Not bad, I think. And the book from Amazon for $20.

It will be in a four part series. It is currently in a three part series. And by trickle down, I don't mean die down. I mean people were starting to get excited about it as news was leaked, launch games were discussed, etc.

I haven't played either of them and have no real idea why they are so expensive. My only guess it's just a bunch of hype really. I've found two complete mint copies at two different pawn shops for 5 bucks each....never played either one. I also found a loose copy with a case at another pawn for 5 bucks which I think I'm gonna go pick up to resell.

This is one of those games that many non collectors don't even know goes for $100+ on ebay. I've seen many of these go for 9.99 buy it now. I've also pick up a couple at pawn shops.

Its o.k. not my cup o tea, wich is why I'm selling it! But in all seriouseness I cant see why it fetches the price it does. I've seen it a LOT! Pry 4-5 in one year alone.

Broke my heart to sell my copy. :(

I hope to be able to get it back once I start my new job and get some bills paid off, and maybe not have to pay more then the $70 I sold it for. Maybe a DP member can hook me up. :)
