View Full Version : What would a complete set be worth?

Looking at a few people's collections, some of you have complete, or nearly complete sets of particular console games - Thing's like Mega Cd / 32X / DreamCast or things like that...

What would you say the set is worth - "As a set"

Does having the whole set increase the value of the games or not? Ie, if you auctioned it off on eBay, would you get more for having the whole set, or would itbe better to sell each game individually?

I was thinking about my mission to get all PAL DreamCast games and wondered if and when I do actually get a complete set, would it be worth a lot?

I thought it might, seeing as it'll probably be the only full set of *Sealed* DreamCast games. I am guessing some people do have a complete set of Dreamy games, but not in sealed condition...

Would there be people and / or corporations maybe out there with the money and desire to purchase a full set of a particular console's games?

I think the answer is pretty much certain that a complete set will be worth less if you want to pass it on all in one go, than selling separately.

There was a guy who got together a complete PAL Saturn collection, and tried to sell the whole thing off, with little success as far as I know .. and that was even at less than the price of the parts, as far as I can remember.

To be honest, the main reason that anyone wants a complete collection is for the challenge of it. And to get it all at once removes all the challenge, and hence the main incentive.

Plus of course, people expect to get discounts for buying in bulk. Not to mention that if you were to sell it all, it would be a significant (and I mean very significant) amount more of an effort to sell it all individually rather than all in one go. But almost without exception you will get more money that way.

Too me a sealed set of Dreamcast games are worthless, I wanna play 'em! Plus there woudln't be any fun in hunting them down. If anyone does buy the complete set they are just gonna get it cheap and break it up into individual lots.

I think the reason a complete set wouldn't as well as selling one by one, is because there is no fun in buying the entire collection right away. I think many of the collectors (myself included) enjoy buying games all the time, and working there way up from 5 games all the way to 500, in a matter of years. Buying the whole set from day 1, wouldn't be near as cool.

Myself, I'd much rather buy a complete set and be done with it. I'll even pay a little extra for the convenience.

I'm not much into the hunting them down. PLus, shipping on individual games can add up!

my thoughts on the 'less expensive complete set on ebay' theory is that most people who want a complete set of games either have a complete set (or near complete) already(because they had an interest in owning these games) or dont have the money to buy a complete set. not to mention dropping a bunch of money on ebay is no fun. click, click, sign a check...not really for me.. guess im just a hunter at heart...

kind of related...
i once saw a complete set of sachen games on ebay...boxes, instructions and all(i think 2 boxes were missing) go for $750. these games routinely - even the crappy ones - sell for $20+ a piece.

in short, i think youd get less for a full set than by the game. many more people have $20 or even $100 to spend on games that dont have $500 to spend...

(I've got that one. Capcom was so impressed their logo isn't even on the box...they let Tiger take credit for that one)

Hunting them down individually is half the fun, plus not many people would have all the money to drop on a set at once.

or.. its so bad they did NOT want to take credit for it LOL!

But with acomplete set - Especially say, my set of DreamCast ones sealed - you'd be guaranteed to get all the really hard to find ones.

Most of you will know how annoying it is to collect a set, and be left holding out for the last four or five games which you just know will take ages for you to get...

I have spend just over 9 months collecting my DreamCast games (Sealed ones - I have had games from launch) and am over halfway there already. I have a majority of the rarest ones under my belt, but just know I am going to be holding out for years and years for a sealed Taxi II to come along...

The value of a complete set is usually lower, as people enjoy the thrill of the hunt, and usually will have at least some games for a system before they start looking to complete their collection. If I were ever to sell my collections, I would definitely "part them out" into either groups of games or each game individually.

Nope :D He is referring to "Taxi 2 - Le Jeu", based on the French film Taxi 2. Kickass film. Hopelessly poor game. But as it was only released in Europe (perhaps only in France? I'm not sure..) it is almost certainly the rarest PAL Dreamcast game.

I had a complete game.com collection once it took me a whole of one week to complete it, lol, the games that came in the plastic case really pissed me off since the boxed ones looked nicer, they should have all been that way
