So I dropped into Hot Topic the other nioght to snap up some xmas gifts for my two oldest kids age 13 and 17. I was browsing their video game t-shirts and noticed that they had 2 different Sonic t-shirts. One was cool and the other was kinda... meh. Sonic shirt linkage (http://www.hottopic.com/store/searchSKU.asp?LS=0&DOIT=YES&SSTR=Sonic)
I almost picked it up for my son but found this one for him instead. N64 Shirt linkage (http://www.hottopic.com/store/product.asp?LS=0&ITEM=209415)
He's totally into the N64!
I plan to go back and grab that brown Sonic shirt for myself after xmas. :D

sure, videogame related shirts are awesome, just not when you see every trendy kid in your local mall wearing it because it must be the cool thing since hot topic has it.

in the malls i swarm in, i'm the only one using those shirts. All the other people are waring the urban outfitters ones.

But think man, they'll all go OUT of style in a couple months and end up at goodwill for a dollar or such.

The only videogame-related shirt I've seen at Urban Outfitters (granted, it's been a long while since I last set foot in there) were the Atari t-shirts that were so popular a few years ago (see that Tom Green movie where he wears a green Atari t-shirt).

I don't care if this is trendy or not.
I want that damned brown Sonic shirt, because it kicks ass. I don't care if some 15 year old punk is wearing it just because everyone else is wearing it.
I used to think that the videogame t-shirts were cool. But as others mentioned, everyone in the area started wearing them.
As for the Sonic shirt, the black one isn't cool, and the brown one---well brown just isn't my color.

I'm not sure if this was a typo or meant as a joke, either way I laughed LOL
Anyway I'm glad to see that (so far) they aren't crudding up the shirts with dumb catchphrases like "Know your Roots" "Classicaly Trained" "Say Hello to My little Friend" or my fave "Old Skool"

A mistake a combo of just getting off of work and having a broken monitor.

Yeah these shirts have been out for a while, you can have either classic Genesis style Sonic shirts or Dreamcast style Sonic shirts
Only thing I never liked about Hot Topic shirts, they easily fade out and tend to shrink easily. Plus I don't like the price of them. $18-$22 for a single shirt? Yeesh

Shopping at Hot Topic =/= trendy. Don't worry about it being a fad anytime soon.

There aren't a whole lot of places outside of Hot Topic selling video game shirts so it's not like we have a lot of choices unless you buy online. And online stores may have less mainstream designs but don't have any better pricing when you factor in the shipping.
I don't care if a bunch of kids wear these because they're cool or "trendy" because if any of us wear these shirts shirts we can back it up with our collections if somebaody says "oh my son has a shirt like that!"
And if you see a 13 year old boy in the lloyd center mall wearing that N64 shirt... ask him about his N64 collection. You might be amazed that some of these trendy kids actually know a thing or two about the games behind the shirts.
I'm still hoping HT gets some SNES/SFC shirts so I can wear my collecting proudly. :)

They need to do a nice, full-color one with the cover art from the original Sonic. I would buy that, for sure.

But you have to remember, people were wearing the shirts you wore for years before you wore them, so it sort of goes full circle. :)

In fact, it feels like 1995 all over again. The return of the geek chic look, after a few years of hiatus. As Arcade Antics said, it goes full circle. I remember going to a mall in the spring of 2003. Seeing all the fluo-colored preppy clothes made me wonder whether I had somewhat travelled back in time to 1988...

You both have a well stated point and have put me in place. But i still dislike Hot topic expect the cd selection is usually nice. Because I listen to more "underground" stuff then mainstream stuff. Anywho im just a hater dont mind me. LOL

Damn. What an insult to SEGA. I thought they were the only game related thing Hot Topic hadn't ruined. But no. They had to try and be as trendy as possible and make SEGA shirts. Now we can see a million kids wearing them that the only SEGA game they have ever plaed is Sonic. I'd bet money hardly any of them knew what a SEGA Saturn is.

Oh no, we're not reverting back to the "alternative music isn't alternative anymore" discussion, are we? Quick, duck! *ducks under the desk*

I knew I was in trouble when I entered JC Penny and saw a whole section dedacated to "punk" last year. As a old school punker I felt hurt.. alone.. empty. Then I came to the conclusion that these kids wearing this"trendy punk" fashion are only trying to be as cool as me. And since I have enough cool to go around I felt ok again. So I go into hot topic and I'm like the oldest person in there... but yet I'm still the coolest! :D

I have to admit, that Legend of Zelda shirt is pretty cool, but I still wouldn't buy it. I would much rather buy a old shirt, that was actually made in the late 80's/early 90's, then to buy a new one that is made to look old.

Who cares? Punk's relevance died long ago and it's ghost certainly isn't Casper, unfortunately. I still buy shirts at Hot Topic, but I do so exclusively from the clearance racks. Can't beat my $9 Duck Hunt, Space Ghost, Ramones, etc. shirts!
It seems like a lot of the people who hate Hot Topic are the same people who spent their punk-ass teenage years in there buying the crack-vial candy, 'smart-ass' slogan tshirts and gobbling up 'juggalo' merch by the truckload.

Excellent shirt! :)
Call the kids who shop at HT whatever you want but the selection at HT is one way the HT kids express their distaste for Hilfiger, Zumiez and all the other hip image stores that are trendy beyond anything HT has to offer.

Well, it's not the cover art, but I have the title screen. Got this in 92, I think:

That Sonic t-shirt must have been made by the same company that made the Wile E. Coyote and Taz t-shirts that I had back in 93. The only difference in style is that the front and the back were exactly the same instead of having the character only in the front.

Here are a few other items of apparel from the era:
This shirt could be ordered from Sega (via Visions)

This could NOT be ordered, so I ended up sweet-talking the salesgirl at Sears "Funtronics" out of it:
