Hi gang -
I used to really enjoy my Sega Genesis, and even the 32X offered me some good gems (Shadow Squadron, for instance) that I go back to every so often.

I'm also a big fan of the Shining Force series, I've played the Genny games many times over - so imagine my joy when I found a copy of The Shining Force CD for a cool $3 at a thrift store on Monday! Bira Bira was kind.....

Okay - so I don't have a Sega CD. Well, I sure want one now! I like the idea of having Genesis/32X/CD (and maybe SMS) capability in one unit.

I have the second model of the Genesis, so I'll need the side-car version.
I'm tempted by the CDX portable, but I don't want to sacrifice my 32X capability.
(I know it's possible to hook it up, but it sounds goofy.)

If I can bother the gaming minds of the last generation for a minute, here are a few questions that have arisen.....

Should I instead hold out for the JVC X-Eye combo model?
Does it offer any real advantages? More importantly - will it accept a 32X?

Was a second version of the Master System Power Base adaptor ever released that'll fit the second Genny?

If so, does it have a card slot? Is it compatible with the JVC model?

Is the AC adaptor for the Sega CD player the same as for the 32X?

How many hookup cables do I need with the Sega CD?

Is there a stereo AV cable to hookup the Sega CD?

Thank you in advance for your time!

To hook a 32x to a CDx, just pry off the bottom case section of the 32x, pretty basic modification. That's all that needs to be done.

The 32X and the Genesis II share an AC adaptor. The Sega CD uses a different one, if I recall.
You can't have SMS and 32x capabilities simotaneously.

The second version was released (R5), it doesn't work on the JVC model, and it has no card slot.

You need the AC adaptor to hook up the Sega CD, not sure if you need anything else.

I have a Model 1 Genesis connected to a Model 1 (tray) Sega CD. The stereo AV cables connect to the Genesis on my set-up. But you don't use the audio from the Genesis, only the Yellow Video plug. Connect a regular Red/White RCA speaker cable to the SegaCD for your audio. At least thats how mine works. For proper sound mixing I have to use a mixing cable to connect the Genesis headphone jack to the input in the back of the Sega CD. It may be different with a Model 2 set-up, I'm not sure. Hope this helps :)

$3 for Shining CD... excellent find! :o

You don't necessarily have to remove anything. A nice fella did a feature (http://www.sega-16.com/Feature-%2032X%20&%20CDX%20Connecting.htm) for my site about how to connect it. You'd have to cut if you want it to be really snug.

Wasn't this Europe only?

Thanks for all the help. Most of my questions have been cleared up, so free tokens for everybody.
Ahem.

So - when the Genesis model II is hooked up to the Sega CD and the 32X, which unit does the AV cable come out of?

Any chance of this making the 32X playback stereo?

Does anybody think the JVC Genesis/CD combo is worth the money?

Thanks again!

Yup. It'll work fine in the US, but they are trickier to find. There's one or two 3rd Party models aswell.

The output for the Genesis/CD/32X comes out the 32x output port.

If you connect some RCA cables to the stereo output on the rear of the Sega CD, everything (Genesis/CD/32X) should be in stereo.

As for the JVC combo, I cannot say. I dunno much about it.

Thanks!
I might not be understanding you, though. O_O

Are you saying I should run the video from the 32X, but the stereo audio out of the Sega CD? At the same time? Will that work?

Yes, that's what I meant.

The SegaCD doesn't output video, but it DOES output Stereo audio. You have to get the video from the 32X.

If you want Stereo without grabbing audio from the Sega CD, you'll have to buy a Stereo Genesis A/V hookup, and they're usually pretty expensive. I found it much cheaper to use a cheap Genesis Monoaural A/V for Video, and hookup the Stereo audio from the Sega CD.

I've yet to have any problems with the setup.

The JVC combo sucks. It really does. Don't buy it.

Fascinating.
It seems like the video signal goes one way (CD - Genny - 32X) and the audio signal goes the other way (32X - Genny - CD).

One more thing - the Sega CD has standard RCA plug outputs?

Thanks!

Mr. Smashy posted this link in another Genesis thread - and I found it VERY useful. It answered everything for me. Thanks, Smashy!

Some of the differences in connectors can be seen here:

Now, I just need to FIND a Sega CD.......
