So, the year is almost over, and we can look back and reflect.

What important happened in the gaming world and the game industry this year? What will people like Stephen Kent and Leonard Herman have to say about 2004 when they update their great books?

Off the top of my head, here's the big things I'll remember:
-- The launch of a new system, the Nintendo DS (two, if you want to count the PSP but that was Japan only)
-- The 'death' of two others, the Neo-Geo and PlayStation
-- The PC gaming industry recieved some major games to help breathe life into a slacking market, such as Half Life 2, Doom 3, and Pirates.
-- Halo 2 and GTA: SA were the most hyped games of the year, and mostly lived up to it.
-- The merging of Square and Enix (that DID officialy happen this year, was'nt it?)
-- Despite perdictions, more MMORPG games get launched, such as Worlds of Warcraft, City of Heros, and EverQuest 2.
-- The redesigned PS2 and NGage.
-- The XBox secures a second place in the console war, while the GameCube, for several reasons, drops to third.
-- The flop of the long awaited Hard Drive for the PS2.
-- Increased online play and hacking for the PS2 and XBox
-- The retro market continues to grow, with more all in one sticks, more collections like Atari Anthology, and the Flashback.
-- Last but not least, the five year deal between EA and the NFL.

These aren't "book update" big, but still...

-The NES GBA SP and the NES Classics Series.
-The infamous Playboy video game character pictorial, topless Bloodrayne and all.
-Katamari Damacy, the addictive sleeper hit of 2004.

Half-Life 2 and Halo 2, two of the biggest games of the year, both stolen prior to release.

The "final"? game from Working Designs released (only news if it really is, and I suspect it will be).

I know that this is not much of a computer forum, but still the release of the C64DTV is quite notable. I mean, this is a hardware based clone of the old C64 rather than just NES emulation of old games like most of those other direct-to-TV sticks.

One that slipped my mind when I made my original post: Acclaim's bankruptcy.
