Well, this weekend I got a really nice ROB so I played some gyromite.. You know I thought that rob worked different then he does.. I really thought he was controlled by the game but it is basically you controlling the game and the robot at the same time..
Gyromite is actually EASIER without ROB lol.
But I love the little guy, talk about retro.. What says cool 80's toy better then Robot+Gyroscopes+video game system? not much..

Getting a good full working ROB is a tough one.. I should know, my complete guy was put together from over 4 different ones!
It's amazing how much SH*T I had to go through to complete him. I guess he's my all time NES nemesis. >)
Luckly, I'm really good with a solder, and circuit boards, so getting mine to work like brand new wasn't that difficult (a gear move here, a motor swap there..)
But he's now complete. 2 of them found other homes, and the last guy is sitting on my desk at work as a conversational piece. All 4 came from eBay. The only time I've ever seen ROB in the wild was in a gaming store as a display unit (not complete, and not for sale) and another time in another game store as a business card holder (not functional one, not for sale).
That's where I got the idea of putting the last one at work on my desk from.. :)
Good luck!

that's the cool thing about bargain hunting. You find 4 over the year, sell off the ones with a little scratch here or a label curl there and you end up with the nice top loader, or 2600.. etc (and a Dreamcast on the floor that you can't get rid of. :/ )

How can you play with those carboard covers on the gyros??? Doesn't it mess up with the amount of time the gyro can spin?
Anyways.. that's the only thing that's missing from my ROB. I do have the sunglasses (more like glare glasses from the TV) that came with him.

They spin just fine.. the cards are symetric so no weight problems.

A friend of mine still has his ROB also. ROB works perfectly with the top-loader and the orginal NES then I take it?

Umm You don't NEED rob to play Gyromite, I've beaten this game without rob.

I would bet you could even make it work with the Super 8 and an SNES if you did the NES pad to SNES port mod.

theres something really cool about how ROB takes info from the TV screen, what an odd method. i always thought it was lame that nintendo only made 2 games using him. perhaps someday some homebrew programmer will use him.
