Maybe it's cause I played Panzer Dragoon 2 first, cause I really don't see the likeability of the first game.
It's clunky, sparatic, and just down right boring. The second one has a much better pace varying between ground, and air assault, and just a better interface all around. It's a much higher quality game, imo!
Was the first one ever that popular, cause I don't really know the history of Panzer Dragoon, but I wouldn't think it got popular till the second one myself.

I like 'em both but I agree that the second one is a better game all 'round. It should ALWAYS be that way!
The first game was enormously popular though, at least by Saturn standards. Consider that it was a launch title in both the US and Japan. And I'll tell you something else.
One of the very few times I was ever WOWED by a game was when I played Panzer Dragoon for the first time. When that sandworm boss appeared for the first time? I had NEVER seen anything like that on a home system before. It was truly dramatic and the whole game was a wonderful showcase for the "next gen" of gaming...
... AT THAT TIME.
NOW, of course, you look at it and think... "eh". But take my word for it. When it was released, Panzer Dragoon was lightyears ahead of anything like it in terms of graphic beauty on home consoles.

Though I played Panzer Dragoon at demo kiosks, I didn't get to sit down with the game until years after I had been through both Panzer Zwei and Saga. Yet I was still impressed by the original PD. It has a nice 3-D feel, it's intense, and it seems a bit tougher than either of its descendants. It's certainly aged, but it's aged well.
Looking back, I'd have bought a Saturn just for Panzer Dragoon's sake, had I been able to afford it in 1995.

I always thought that the first was the better game. It was more basic, but it seemed to work better that way.

I haven't gotten too far in either game, but I got bored a lot faster playing 2 than I ever did playing the original...

I always loved the whole series. PD2 is a better game, but man, the first one is pretty good too, especailly if you have fond memories of it around release like I do :)

I remember playing it years ago in a Toys'R'Us and thinking "WOW! Next Gen!". The game was truly amazing to me at that time...
