How about "Crazy gamer puts to shame previous MMORPG virtual buyers by buying expensive island"? Nah, too long!

Seriously, though, that's just plain crazy.

I read about this a couple days ago and, you know, honestly, good for him. What some of you fail to notice is that this property is actually valuable, and can generate money. It's entirely possible that he'll turn a good profit.

I personally like the idea of a videogame that rewards you handsomly for being a smart investor. It's like adding a whole new level of interactivity.

EXACTLY!! I was just getting ready to type that. I'm sure he'll be making some money on that deal. From the article:

Deathifier will make money from his investment as he is able to tax other gamers who come to his virtual land to hunt or mine for gold.

He has also begun to sell plots to people who wish to build virtual homes

I applaud the bastard, he's turned his nerdy hobby into a profitable venture.

Only problem is, the terms and conditions of that game state that the publisher can change the exchange rates at any time they want. They can easily make that $25k worth $25 if they want, though I'm sure they'd see some legal action.

Investment or not, he's also investing in the future of that one particular MMORPG, which I'd say is fairly risky.

Especially considering it's one I've never even heard of.

if I was the developer I would probably reprogram the land into a desolete wasteland for kicks...but hey if it works out for him good for him.

What happens when people stop playing the game and all of the stupid shit doesn't exist anymore?
I don't understand some people....

I can see that the potential to make money is there, but c'mon, $26K? And it's not exactly Everquest or Ultima Online in terms of popularity.

i wonder if it would be possible in that game to kill this guy and take his property? that would be awesome, i could just create some real bad ass character and go around robbing weaker players of real money!

To all of the "but have you even heard of this game" replies.
No, but I don't live in Australia either :) I believe it says 200,000 subscribers in there, EASILY rivaling any american MMORPG.

What does it matter if lots of people have never heard of it? If other players are willing to buy plots from him then he can turn a profit. Also, it would maybe be worth his while to set up his own server to keep the world alive of the game was to decline...

Oh, and thanks to his purchase we've all heard of the game now! :)

If the guy is clever enough to turn a profit from it, good for him. Then perhaps he should consider becoming an economic adviser to the African nation of Namibia, 'cause it sounds like they need some help over there.

What I dont get is:

Where did this island come from? Who did he buy the property from? It seems to me like the game delevopers are the smart ones here. Can they just "Create" real-estate when ever they want.

I must admit, I know nothing about MMORPG's and I am certianly not an econimist, but it seems to me like this "invented" economy must be making somebody lots and lots of money for literaly nothing.

This is the big question in my mind. Imagine how much it would suck if his character was killed or something.

People have done much more drastic things for much smaller amounts of money...

wow I really don't understand MMORPG's I'm not sure I even know what they are. I have question for you people who do.

How do you sell suff in these games. I design modern furniture and I had a friend once tell me I should sell computer versions of my furniture in these games. If I was to do this would I have to sell it to the devolpers of the game or can I just build a virtual shop in the game and start selling my furniture. This whole thing is very wierd and kind of scary but I could use some money.
