My roommate had to do a presentation for Social Psychology (and so did I.) My topic (all topics given by professor) was Should the Draft be Reinstated. My lucky bastard of a roommate's topic was Should Children be Allowed to Buy Violent Video Game.

I figured some people may want to take a look at his groups presentation about video games, so here it is.

Video Game Presentation (http://home.ptd.net/~tholly/Videogames.ppt)

Both our groups got 97% (but mine was better. LOL )

This report is food for thought. A smorgasboard for thought, actually. Personally, I think the ESRB should stop being so secretive about itself. Also, they should be more specific with the ratings. They also need to advertise about the ratings IN A CONVINCING WAY. Sure, my PSM disc has an ad on it, but it just barely skims the surface and is very boring. Also, not many parents are going to see this ad. The only ones that will see it already know what the ratings mean. So ESRB, put your ads on national television and EXPLAIN the ratings a bit.
Also, I think there should be a law limiting sales of M or at least AO games to minors. The business stupid enough to sell the game to the kid should get fined more than the family responsible. I mean, $5,000 is a little much for a misdemeanor, don't you think?

Hmm... Interesting. I wish I could take a longer look at it just now...

I guess you didn't have a chance to mention Night Trap or Jack Thompson?

The weird thing is that the ESRB DOES have a add......a couple. I've seen them on the monitors that they have in my local EB. Sports spots -- a player from baseball or football talking about 'matching the right game for the right person' and what the ratings mean. They seem good enough -- but they only show them there, to a auidence that probaly either knows all about the ratings or does'nt care. Why not pay to get them on TV, at least on some cable channels?

well, children should be allowed to play M games...so long as their parants allow it, just like R rated movies. every kid is different in this regard, i know i watched a good bit of R rated movies when i was 8, but there were definitely some i wasn't allowed to watch even at 13.

i'm pretty sure wal-mart, and maybe target won't sell M games to under-age kids, and i think this is a good policy. i'm sure other chains do as well, i just have no clue as i play those games or get carded if i do.

you can see my recent post about dead to rights, and how i found this generation's games to be much more mature...but silly me...i don't even really like music with explicit lyrics. it's just a matter of taste.

but anyways, in the end, and I know everybody is going to say this. THE PARENTS need to be monitoring what their kids are doing. even if they don't understand the rating systems, which i find highly unlikely, rent the game before buying it for your kid. there's just no excuse. and if little johnny is getting his gta fix over at a friends house...again there's no excuse...you damn well better know what goes on over at friend's houses...much more so than video games.

or better yet, teach your kids right from wrong?!
This can be done. It's not too hard, unless you or your kid is a moron. I played DOOM when i was, i think, eight or nine. wolf3d when i was 7. Did i go around shooting people after that? no. It was explained. "it's OK to shoot people in the game. It's not real. See how they come back when you start a new game? there's no reset button in life." it all made sense.
Really, censorship and deprivation don't have to happen. Just a bit of logic, reason, and effort applied can do a great deal.....
